Bad hook/missing left

Recommended Posts

Started hitting a pretty nasty hook/missing left last round. I was also slightly chunking my irons. In the video I’m trying to aim for the bunker in the distance. I’ve been trying to feel the club behind my hands at P6.

What was the main cause of this shot?

Lack of pivot involvement relative to arm dominance in the backswing

Starts with setup and being too close to the ball. Followed by a restricted hip turn that prevents good rotation and lack of proper pressure shifting. You end up on the back leg for too long the right leg moves towards the ball early and your now stuck and as you throw the hands at the ball the heel comes into play

also not helping is being closed to your target. Look at where your body is aimed compared to the face

What’s the ideal distance I should be from the ball? I know it’s different for everyone but I’ve messed with it a lot recently and I still don’t have it down

For a mid iron it should be 1 fist away from the body and the slowly moves out as the club gets longer

I was messing with what Ludvig Aberg does. Set up inside the ball then push the club out to get behind the ball. Is it a solid drill for proper setup in my case? I stopped doing it cuz I was concerned I was pushing out too far.

Aim first, shoot second.  If not set up properly for your shot attempt, which is unknown other than trying to aim at the bunker, remember your eyes have already acquired the target and your internal auto-pilot will instinctively try to go there from either a proper set up, or improper set up, and the train wreck usually happens from the latter.

Ludvig stands really close to the ball. Not sure he's your best model.

I agree with what a lot of the other guys said, but if you really want to fix this, you need to go to a good instructor and say: "I've seen on video that as I come into impact, my hips are getting open but my shoulders are staying MASSIVELY closed, causing me to hit neck hooks."

Likely his fixes will include some of the stuff already mentioned but the real key is for him to give you the kinesthetic feel of what its going to be like to get your hips and shoulders synchronized, ie, your shoulders more advanced and open and stacked on top of your pelvis  coming into impact.

The thing the other guys mentioned about the hips not turning on the backswing is the origin story and partly why the hips have such a huge head start coming back down.

...but you really need some hands-on surgery from someone that knows what they are doing. The right synchronization and is going to feel unbelievably different.

I would love to have an instructor but I don’t wanna sink a bunch of money into something that I think could hurt my game. I like hearing the root causes of my errors and feeling them out myself rather than having a bunch of random feels thrown at me. Any tips on finding good instructors? Is there a trusted website?

Fair enough. I have to admit, my advice was based on making the assumption that you find a guy that knows what he's doing...which is no guarantee. If you can self serve with the right info, carry on.......but just be advised that if I could wave a magic wand and put you into the correct shoulder alignment for impact, you might not believe me. It would feel obscenely different, so be prepared for that.

Yea ill see what I can do myself. If I can find an instructor that I trust I’d definitely do it. Im definitely cautious abt what I look at online though, too many misleading tips out there

Aimed too far right

Too close to the ball

Restricted backswing hip turn

Hips fire before back swing is complete

Shift left also looks late

Arms accelerate very late

Need to start with 1 and 2 first.

Then fixing 3 might fix 4 and 5

6 will be something you address for the rest of your golf life.

How do my hips fire too early when the shift is too late? There’s always been a huge mental block with the hips for me, they probably haven’t changed a lot since I started posting here. I can’t find the right feel for the proper turn. When I try to slow them down my weight transfer gets worse and guarantees a nasty chunk.

The right hip working behind you in the backswing is what initiates the shift at the end of the backswing.  You’re firing your hips rotationally before the backswing is complete.  That inhibits the shift from happening.

Ah, so the right hip should cross a point that naturally creates shift into lead side? And would that be at the top of the backswing?

Seems like you're focusing on swing mechanics more that the severe aiming problem you have. That alone and not being too close it will unlock certain things in your swing. Your brain knows where the target is and will overcorrect with a bad setup. If you make swing changes while not training your aim, you'll go nowhere.

Good little video on the difference being aligned makes.
