Lab putter without the forward press grip, does it defeat the purpose?

It will not impact the torque free balance as long as you have L.A.B. build the putter with the non-Press grip. The Press grips are recommended because they help alleviate the anxiety and visual look of the considerable putter onset that most L.A.B. putters have.

I don’t think switching the grip would affect it. From my understanding is the grip insert the shaft diagonally making it feel like it’s forward pressed when it’s not so if you don’t like to forward press then putting a regular grip should be fine

The Press grip lets you hold the grip vertically, with no press of your hands and arms.  A regular grip will require a setup press by you.  If you don’t, you’ll be using too much loft.

Actually it’s the opposite of what you are thinking.  The stock grip lets it feel conventional.  A regular grip would need to be pressed forward to make the putter work right.

I put a baby T on my DF3 and went from struggling with distance control to it feels like cheating.

Lab would tell you get it balanced with a standard grip. Removing a press grip and installing your own MAY throw off the balance. Interesting note, the CB versions have no shaft lean AND no press grip. Id image more loft may be desired on the setups if you like your heads at or ahead of face.

If you build a custom DF3 on their website you have a choice of 7 press grips and 6 non-press grips

I have a Mezz1 with a Lamkin Deep Etch Cord grip. I like it better then the Press grip as I forward press naturally and had a hard time delofting too much with the Press grip.

That makes perfect sense. I wondered how a person who presses on his own would deal with a LAB.

I currently have the jailbird cruiser cut down to 36 inches with a 13 inch claw superstroke grip. I love it and putt really well with it.

 

But I do like the concept of the df3 and how it rolls.

 

So, I was just curious if that same setup would work with a lab.

LABs have different amounts of onset so some require more, some require less some require none. Since the DF3 has some of the most onset it requires more forward press. It's not impossible to use without a press grip you'll just need to apply a forward press at impact to deliver the proper amount of loft.
