That reroute and arm drop behind you....capital yikes

I literally dont know how to get rid of them. Ive literally fought this for like 4 years now. Idk what feel or change I need. Its extremely frustrating because I can shoot 70s but if I get stuck im easily struggling to stay in the 80s.

You ever do a pause drill at the top. Go to the top, stop, count to 2, then fire the arms down.

Do a pump drill where you exaggerate a steeper hand path. Go to the top, pause, then throw your hands toward the ball, back to the top, throw to the ball again, back to the top, fire through to finish.

I actually have. I had one instructor even try and get my hand path more like JT. The problem is when I start trying to get my hands more in front my takeaway becomes even more disjointed. Im just stuck in hell with my damn swing. Granted its better than 8 years ago but I've developed so many bad habits.

I dont see ur funky path change that bad. Looks similar to Gerard who just won on the pga tour. You can own this move, with a powerful core/turn thru the ball, and or more hand strength which compensates for the inefficiency in transition.

The problem is I get stuck and when I get stuck my game goes to s***.

These types of swings occur because an attribute is emphasized with the player having little to no understanding what to specifically implement….they are left to exaggerate…..the see what sticks approach should be avoided.  OP, managing changes is tough to do on your own….pay a quality individual to develop a game plan and monitor the changes.  Ill leave you with this:  if the handle and club head both approach the ball from the inside near the moment of impact, you’ll have very little chance of having a desirable path and face.

Your arms aren’t looping for no reason.  They are following your body.

You start with about 50* of forward bend.  You shouldn’t have more than 40*.  Your brain knows this and straightened to 40*.

The beginning of the backswing the arms work up following 50* and as you get to the top and transition they follow the 40*.

Interesting so I should feel like my chest is taller at set up or stand closer to the ball?

I don’t think you need to be closer.  Chest higher hands higher will likely happen as well.

The name Sutherland will come up, but the number of golfers who bend 50* who avoid struggles of some kind is a very small number.  Statistically it’s probably zero within the margin of error.  Fairly common issue.

Appreciate the feedback Ill be at work tomorrow working on the higher hands/chest set up. Interesting to find out that my set up is most likely the cause of the reroute that has plagued my swing now for awhile.

You can swing being bent over a little more than what might be commonly advised, it's a choice.  Swinging back using a short club which seeks a route above your spine then swinging back underneath your spine allows sensing the minimal variance allowed in that cramped space.     It takes maybe 10 minutes to sense and trap.

Gotta pump the brakes hard on this one. Apolgies for the bluntness, but this is one of those pieces of advice the hurts people @fowlerscousin. Yes his path change *is* that bad and no it looks nothing like what Ryan Gerard does in any respect to the point that you'd actually be far more accurate in saying he does the "opposite" of what Gerard does. To not see the severity of  the loop is to miss a major red flag, and to think it resembles Gerard is worse:

RDaileyVGerard.gif.95b747cde2df4d78a9ad56658da2afff.gif

That massive dropping back of the hands at the top is a move you'll never see in a pro. You'll never even see *half* that. Matthew Wolff's loop is less than half this distance and he is the outlier among outliers. Rdailey's hands move slightly up/out, back, then WAY back to the extreme. Gerard starts back/flat, stays back/flat, and then comes down slightly steeper/over what he want back on. Far more similar to a Jon Rahm or Raymond Floyd. And no matter what the swing looks like, hand paths are always pretty tight like Gerard's (see the orange line). They're never all over over the place because you can't manage all over the place consistently.

That gets to what @getitdaily challenged you to do @Rdailey9108 which actually tells us a lot:

RDaileyPath.gif.ed7878252f7eee116a627dc6620a293e.gif

Exaggerated swing on the left, original on the right. When prompted to do something extreme, you couldn't. You did change your path midway up the backswing to be slightly flatter, but critically to took the club away basically identically which tells us a lot, especially when combined with the fact that you're *un*aware of a far more extreme move you're doing at the top.

This will be some conjecture/musing, but the fact of the matter is that your inability to feel these things is going to be your biggest hurdle. IMO one of the main advantages that children have starting the game and DISadvantages that adults have is how one learns to get the club to the ball. Children are forced to get there via pure intuition with really no preconceived ideas. Their swings are usually all over the place and they aren't strong enough to do anything to deliberately funky. They're at the mercy of wherever the club wants to go and they need to figure out how to get it somewhere. With enough time and repetition you end up with a more deeply ingrained ability to get club to ball from *wherever*. Adults, especially strong ones, largely bypass this stage and can jump straight to doing those funky things with their preconceived ideas, which is a really bad double whammy. More prone to get into bad places + less equipped to get out of them.

If you've really spent 4 years trying to *stop* thrusting your arms backwards out of your shoulder sockets....a move that most people would have to try VERY hard to even imitate, then you're going to have to spend some time learning how to move different. That might mean spending some time hitting the ball in all sorts of wacky ways that force you to abandon your "natural" swing, like starting with the club in a variety of weird places, letting your wrists by super floppy the whole time, one handed, cross handed etc etc...or spending a LOT of time with training aids that force you into position. Swings with a very heavy training club could be good too. Either way, that's your blocker IMO.

So should I "feel" like my hands arch in almost like the feel of the hands brushing the thigh, or is it more of a sequencing issue which my hips move too much too early and the hands get out of whack?? I used to try and feel like I dragged the hands more I can see if I can find an old swing to show you what I mean.

That second swing was from this thread I believe, yeah? Monte's reply was all you needed to worry about there (too much forward bend). The "loop" you have at the top there is tiny, almost non-existent, and your hands follow a very standard "neutral" path up and down. You're probably a bit late with your lower body here and a bit flippy at the bottom, but the overall hand path here was infinitely more playable than that crazy drop back loop you started doing after this.
