Player of the Year

Other than the FedEx Cup playoffs, all the big events are finished for this year. Right now, Scottie is obviously POY, but it's fun looking at Rory's and his resumes for this year.

Scottie:

CJ Cup Byron Nelson

PGA Championship

The Memorial

The Open

Rory:

AT&T Pebble Beach

The Players

The Masters

The Masters and Open are equivalent. In my opinion, the Players and Memorial and equivalent. The AT&T and CJ Cup are equivalent. Right now, that gives Scottie the advantage with 1 extra win (which is a major).

What would Rory have to do to get POY over Scottie:

1. Win FedEx Cup?

2. Sweep all 3 FedEx Playoff events?

3. Can't win it. Nothing would beat Scottie's resume?

I think Scottie has it locked up regardless. But, I think the vote would be close if Rory swept the Playoffs (would give him 6 wins, a major, the Players, and the FedEx Cup).

I respectfully disagree. The majors are the only tournaments with the LIV guys and they, unlike the signature events, have a full field

When did The Masters become a full field event? It isn't and didn't In reality it's true field size is closer to the signature event field sizes like the 80 at Pebble.

As much of a fan I am I don’t see a world where Rory can go on heater like that (#2 in OP) and Scottie doesn’t maintain a similar level of play and top 10 every event he is in the rest of the year barring injury. It’s already written. Scottie is POY.

A real toss up between pebble beach and TPC Craig T Nelson’s ranch.

Haha. If we're talking courses, I would much rather play Pebble. In my mind, I was thinking tour players probably consider both tournaments relatively equal in prestige.

Dutch1008 probably did a better job with tournament comparison.

I don’t think any tour player, fan or human in general would compare these two and find them equal.

I think Scottie’s now had the better year but for the record I think the players is a more impressive win than a PGA at Quail

I don't think many, if any, tour players would agree.

Guessing they've already got Scottie's name engraved on the trophy.

Masters isn't but the other 3 majors are. And the Masters at least has some LIV players.

The Masters field is more like the second round of the playoffs. Top 50 plus the ex champions -many of which are LIV guys to make you happy.

As of right now it it’s Scheffler by a mile for POY and it’s somewhat ridiculous to even consider it a “race”.

I like measuring quantity of wins, top 10s, and cuts made.  So if Rory ran off a couple wins in a row, and dominated in the Ryder cup, while Scottie missed a cut or 2, I’d probably vote for Rory.  I think we overvalue the majors a touch these days.

Ryder Cup means nothing to the POY vote.

In what world are the Players and Memorial equivalent? Players is a much bigger deal…have you ever heard of anyone wanting to call Memorial a fifth major?

But I do agree Scottie has it locked up.  But we seem to need these discussions as you may recall there were some thinking Schauffele should be considered last year because he won two events…both majors…and some seemed to think that as better than 9 wins with one major.🤯

Scottie tied JT’s record 72 hole score of 253 on a course that was half a thousands yard longer. JT’s record was at Waialae that was 7000 yards.

That’s 1 total stroke higher than shooting 63 every round on a 7500 yard course. Come on now.

His average margin of victory in his major wins would be more than a stroke higher than it is if he had just 2-putted the 18th green in 2022 Masters instead of that funny 4-putt to win by 3.

At a venue not fit to host a tour event. It’s a joke of a course for these guys. It’s like a LCP round. Put an asterisk on it lol.

The correct answer is Scottie based on overall play, but Rory finishing off the career grand slam is going to get him the win here and I'm not mad about that at all. Rory deserves the recognition, and watching him overcome a decade of close calls and the accompanying scar tissue is one of the greatest sports achievements I've ever seen.

If Rory wins a fedex playoff event and the tour championship there is an argument (if Scottie doesn't win any more tournaments). Outside of that, it's already over.

And let's be honest, Scottie will probably win at least one more time this year.

I think it's a done deal honestly. Rory already said he's skipping Memphis.
