Moved from Mizuno JPX 921 Forged to the Maltby TS4s

How did the distances compare between the JPX and TS4?  I’ve been eyeing the TS4s as well, although happy with my Mizunos (both JPX921 Forged and MP20 HMB).

Despite the Maltby's having slightly weaker lofts, my experience is that they play basically the same, if not a yard or two longer.  Not sure if that has to do with the placing of the tungsten weight being more directly behind the ball in the Maltby's or because they have less offset, but just feel SOLID.

Even on a toe hit, I could tell it was off the toe, but didn't lose nearly as much distance as I do with my Mizunos.

That has been exactly my experience as well.  I can’t explain it.  But, time and again i find them equal to or longer than my stronger lofted clubs.

It could have something to do with their lower (than most) CG and not being excessively spinny. I've had the same experiences with multiple Maltby sets. I ended up having my current set (TE+) adjusted 2° weaker because I was finding a 44° PW flying 140 yds was just too much of a gap to my 115-120 yd 50°.

The TS4 is just a magnificent club on all levels for it's class. The same goes for the TE+.. hell, the whole TS line is just perfect. If Maltby were an OEM, all of their irons would be at the top of the best of lists for sure. I'm just waiting for a free agent on the PGA or LIV tours to show up with some TS4's and just clean up lol (wishful thinking)😜

I'm always amazed when a high toe strike gives me a nice high draw that ends up on the green. Fantastic clubs.

I just had my TE+ and TS4 DBM combo set built with $30 graphite shafts and the total was less than $800 including shipping and tax.

The TS4 are honestly so easy to hit I could have gone TS4 through the set.  I am really stoked on them, and I keep daydreaming about building another set in satin.

I've got 2 rounds with them and my miss has been long.  I need to get used to taking one less club.  Not a bad thing for me 🙂

Just to give some background on my iron set progression, I only change them every 5-6 years - went from some 2008 Taylor Made Tour Preferred to Callaway CB16 and moved into the Mizuno JPX 921 Forged in 2021 (KBS Tour 110 R shaft).

Had recently considered building a set as just a project and had looked at various DTC irons, usually with the skeptical eye that most have around not having a "name" in the bag - what's the quality like, etc. Started looking at the Maltby's with an eye on the TS1s, since they basically seemed like a version of the Taylor Made P790s, but the TS4s were too good looking to pass up and Maltby even markets them as "Super Game Improvement (PF701+) design" and the YouTube reviews were all very positive, even confirming that off-center hits seem to lose little, if any distance.

Figured I'd take a flyer on a set and finally gamed them yesterday and was blown away.  They feel better than any iron I've gamed, look outstanding, and even though I'm not cost conscious, the idea of ever dropping $1,300+ on a set of stock irons ever again is ludicrous.

I kept costs minimal (<$600) for 5-GW just throwing in the stock True Temper Score LT shaft in stiff and honestly see no reason (for me) to look for a different shaft at this point.  If you're in the market for new irons, do yourself a favor and order 1 club to try - they really are phenomenal.

Right now I hate you for posting this. I have the Mizuno JPX 923 Forged which I really like, but find the gapping a bit big. I just got a lightly used set of cobra King tour irons I'm enjoying. The Mizuno irons feel much better on mis-hits but I think I'm having better dispersion with the Cobras.

These Maltby irons look fantastic.  Thank you for posting your review.

I have TS3 in long irons for my back-up set. They are extremely easy to play, almost super game improvement levels of forgiveness in a one-piece forged iron. TS4 looks like a more playable P7TW which is an amazing idea.

Maltby irons never work for me. Always way to spinny

I flat out hated the old M-05 (TE, etc.)  I hit them straight up in the air.  I went back to the Maltbys with the KE4 Tour, which has a much higher COG followed by the TS4 and TS1-IM and their higher COG are MUCH better for me.

Probably should provide more context like what specific irons you've tried as there have been many models and even in their current lineup the irons have different COG placements.

I'm a high spin player because of how much I hit down on the ball and the TS4 and TS1-IM are great for my swing.  The M-05, TE, TS3 just spin too much for me.
