Chipping: standing up through the shot (Dr. Greg Rose)

Recommended Posts

Good video.  I tune out almost anything "ground forces", haha, it just doesn't resonate with me at all and my head spins enough if I have to think about the golf swing, but many get it.

Monte has had some good stuff up on his Instagram in the past, including shots of Tiger on little pitches, showing the move up through the shot and watching players do it on something that simple to see is better for me than watching someone go on about data and my pelvis (so I'm making an assumption Rose is talking about the same thing).  For me, it just happens if I keep my left shoulder moving through the shot and keep my hips relatively quiet - but have to mind it. Those little shots around greens where the ball is down in rough remembering the keys is the recipe for success vs. flubbing for me.

This and the Mayo instructional stuff has been a game changer for me personally.

I was a great chipper when I had a more vertical shaft orientation in my backswing and had less depth years ago. As time went by my short game and regular swing got more inside and more laid off at the top. I started hitting everything fat and I thought I was too steep so I tried to shallow my strike even more with right side bend and more width. In the end that did more harm than good.

Once Joe started sharing his ideas and I started to implement them, my chipping got better. Then this video came out and I started jumping away from the ball. Wow, that just took it to another level.

Now if I have a good  tight lie, I’m scaring the hole on chips around the greens.

James Ridyard has an interesting video about chipping - it was part of a lesson with Coach Lockey. He talks a lot about radius and how depending on how you grip the club and release the club, your radius changes or doesn't. If your radius gets longer, then you need to do something else to come back to the ball at the right point. Standing up some is one of the things you can do.

Does Mayo also teach rising through the shot?

To avoid getting lower on the swing is it as simple as not adding knee flex during the swing?  Is it better to have more knee flex at setup so you can only go up?

No reason to add knee flex at setup. You aren’t “avoiding” getting “lower” anyway, so why set up lower?

Yes you definitely are avoiding getting lower in your swing. It’s still one of my faults in my short game swing…I add flex to my left knee and i’m later “jumping” than I need to be and it’s almost any instant fat.

Mayo wants very little lower body movement.

All "tips" are welcome. Instruction not desired.

When starting as shown, half-way down, it is not totally necessary for a part of us climbing making room for club head travel.  One can go more level based on strike choice-conditions and still get the club through simply by rotating trail forearm CCW which elevates the club head thus giving it the room it needs- mass seeks force.   It's a pretty decent video about pelvic punch overall but leaves a few potentially significant pieces unaddressed.

Is it geometrically necessary? No. But if 95% or 99% of the game's best players (or chippers at least) have their COM rising in this part of the motion… saying that it's not "necessary" is perhaps just playing word games.

CCW from what POV? Or about what axis? Because if you're at the position he shows, the arrows shown here are CW from our perspective, but CCW from his, and would… just put the club closer to the ground (and likely shove the sweet spot outside the ball a bit).

Like what? Do you feel that the COM shouldn't go up a little throughout that part of a chipping motion? Or maybe you just generally against things "lifting"??? 🤣

Are you saying one doesn't have to stand up? Technically true, but that bit about adding in forearm rotation is an unnecessary complication that then has to be managed perfectly every single time. That's a recipe for chunks to nowhere and blades over the green when anything's off.

No.

I think he's talking about doing what your arrows suggest, but not until the top of the takeaway/start of the transition in the chipping stroke, creating a weird, forced delofting and shallower delivery. Whatever the actual idea is, it's begging for bad results and complicating what should be a simple motion.
