Tips for maintaining posture and not dipping head in downswing

Recommended Posts

I've been working hard the last year or so to maintain my posture better in my backswing and reduce head movement but now need to work on this in my downswing.  I used to really sway back and rotate my shoulders very flat and my head would move back and down a ton.  I still have some of this but it is much much better.

I also definitely struggle with early extension but really struggling with how to maintain my posture and not dip my head down so much on the downswing.  The backswing changes took a long time for me to find the right feel and could use any advice on potential feels to help resolve this in the downswing as well.

Swaying off ball with a narrow stance while lead knee still collapsing and trail knee buckling.  Clean that up first.

Chin down is way better than chin up during the strike, which means several pieces good.     Work on legs first, back up from ball a touch, more athletic bounce in legs at setup, practice pivot without a club and fold arms across chest for sensing torso flexion and extension and how knee action and knee levels provide a stable platform while also keeping hips from maxing their range out too soon.

Thanks, can you clarify what you mean by trail knee buckling?

I can try.  Ideally, turn inside the trail knee.   Stand completely erect, no club, arms folded, feet shoulder width apart, and turn as far as you can clockwise as if to look at someone directly behind you.  You should easily turn inside your trail knee do to so,  you can't do that if that knee sways away.

Gotcha, I understand what you're saying now.

Moving mass in one direction creates a need for a counter balance of mass in the other.  A backswing has mass moving in a multitude of directions (linear, vertical, rotational).  Your lower body is not counter balancing the torso, arms and club movements in the backswing.  Merely highlighting/focusing on the knees or tailbone would be incorrect as their movements in amount and rate need to synchronize to the torso/arms/club.  Understand why, then how, will then open the door to you allowing the orthodox movements to occur at the correct rates and amounts.  Swing like yours occur because most of the focus in on the upper body when many of the attributes youre attempting to recreate are because of lower body function.

Your head is a non issue.  Your neck is tilting, but has little to no effect on you hitting the ball.  Just a bad habit resulting from the following.  Fix these three things and you’ll be able to fix neck issue.

You need to improve your pelvis movement in backswing more.  It’s still swaying.

You need to accelerate your arms earlier to start downswing.

You need to learn to clear the left hip versus driving the right hip toward the target.

Thanks, when you say to accelerate my arms, is this in transition from the top or my backswing in general?

From the top.  You might be a hair slow in the backswing, but nothing troublesome.

Leg's looking better on the backswing here.  Just need to figure out how to push from my left leg and straighten knee to get my left hip back on downswing lol.  Saggy and swaying knees forward been too ingrained in my swing all these years.
