Gaining mobility post 40

You provided an anecdote about an injury, with no context about the specific exercise, any previous injury, conditioning of the athlete, warmup, etc.  You're offering that as "proof" that lifting, even with proper form, can directly cause injury.

So if I said that I've lifted 2 or 3 times a week for 50 years (which, btw, is true) for a total of somewhere between 6000 and 7000 workouts and have NEVER been injured from working out, would that prove that you absolutely CANNOT be injured working out?  Of course not, and I'd be silly to make that claim.

You can get hurt doing ANYTHING, but I think any coach or trainer would agree with me that not only is lifting safe, but that it REDUCES the chances of injury.  People that are stronger are typically also more mobile and more flexible (especially if they have a balanced and carefully planned workout routine) and are much less likely to injure themselves playing golf, or tennis, or running, or whatever else we could think of.

you realize I lift weights, right?

I'll take your word for it, though I must say that you're seeing things I simply haven't.  And I think my database on this is pretty massive by any standard.

I was a HS basketball coach for 40 years, and from the early 80's until I retired in 2013, my teams lifted year round; we went at it HARD during the spring, summer, and fall; we cut sets and reps but maintained weight during the season primarily to PREVENT injury, and we were very successful with that.  Plus I was around the football coaches and players, in addition to my years lifting around "regular people" at the Y  since I retired.

I'm sure if I polled all my coaching buddies, or the employees and personal trainers at the Y, I could find someone who would remember a weight room injury other than fingers and toes.  But it's certainly not commonplace, and not worth worrying about.  And the benefits are just huge.

yeah, fitness and lifting are great and does help to prevent injuries when done the right way. I didn’t know too many that got injured in high school lifting either, I pretty much could recover in a few days if I got hit by a semi in high school.

Unfortunately, injuries do come with lifting and more so heavy lifting as we age. It’s wear and tear just like anything else but being sedentary is even worse so you need to find the right balance.

if you don’t believe me that injuries happen from lifting then check out the Starting Strength forum, in the injury section. It’s the most popular section on that forum besides maybe the technique section. The bodybuilding forum doesn’t exist anymore or I would tell you to go there.

It's already been stated in several different ways that heavy lifting, and further heavy lifting while doing exercises like squats or deadlifts, aren't the norm for golf-related workouts. Don't get what the reason is for going around in circles. The people you're arguing with aren't advocating for throwing 400 on the squat rack being essential for golf. bluedot even went so far as to specify the commonly-recommended exercises and heavy squats and the like weren't among them.

You're right, it's a risky proposition to throw hundreds of pounds on the back when that's not what our bodies evolved to do and only those with very high levels of muscle and very good knowledge of form should even attempt it, and even then the stress it puts on the joins despite any supporting musculature makes it questionable for long-term joint health.

Luckily no one in here to my knowledge is saying that's what any golfer should be doing.

yeah, I just got pulled into this based on my response to simpsonia. These conversations usually go in circles.

Without recommending specific mobility exercises or a routine.  Where we can gain and maintain the most from mobility is build strength, stability and control of whatever range of motion you are trying to gain.

I did a lot of static stretching and it serves its purpose, but most of the gained in “ mobility” related to it were temporary.  It wasn’t till I started to build strength and control through that extended range of motion did I see more permanent gains

This. I didn't want to chime in because people have very strong opinions on strength. But if you have to do "mobility" work every day to avoid stiffness and pain, that's a sign of areas that require strengthening.

Somewhere between Ed Coan and Richard Simmons, there is a strength program that combined with solid pre-hab and mobility that will lead to lasting and more permanent improvement.

100%. Lack of exercise causes healthy fluid around the joints to diminish and reduces nutrient flow and oxygenation. We create a nutrient-deficient area less capable of resilience to shock when we don't exercise. A lot of the aching is direct wear and tear on hardening cartilage as well as bones, joints, and weakened tendons taking forces strong muscle and healthy fluid levels used to mitigate.

Can be a problem at any age for someone who's not active, just more likely for older adults to become sedentary enough for it to creep up.

Because you keep inferring and then implying that any discussion about lifting, especially when someone merely mentions specific lifts like squats of deadlifts, is somehow referring to heavy power lifting. I literally never mentioned heavy lifting, and in a follow-up mentioned that I was even specifically referring to light weights (such as a bar alone). That's when you kept swooping in about injury. Do you think someone is going to get horribly injured squatting a 45lb bar? There's also all of the variants of those exercises like RDLs and split squats.

So are we finally in agreement that light and moderate lifting is generally a net benefit for most people, especially aging desk jockeys who badly need core strength and mobility?

just bar alone, probably not. I would probably stick to easier exercises to perform though.

I'd be interested in hearing @bluedot exercise routine? I'm always interested in learning better ways to work out.
