Sorry Rant on Entitled "Members"

Recommended Posts

Not looking for answer or anything, just a rant at people. I will note that the course pro and GM do all they can do so absolutely zero hard feelings on them.

Background: So our league plays a semi private course. We have enough for 11 foursomes and the course gives us one nine to shotgun start for our 9 hole round. When we play any members or public that wants to play are told you're playing the other nine. Also this course is in a community so many people and members have their own golf carts.

Rant is why do members think it doesn't matter and they can just come in and play whatever hole they want? I know since May I've had to talk to 3 groups of these clowns who try to sneak in wherever they please. 1 group was apologetic and took off to the other nine. Another straight up ignored us saying this nine is for league only, had to call the pro shop and they took care of it quick. Last group it happened to was the worse 3 older men, (60+), Walked up said excuse me, just so you know this nine is for our league today, I'm sure the back nine is open. They got immediately confrontational in walked up uncomfortably close,  with the you know I'm a member here comment. Again semi-private you get pro shop credit and advance tee times compared to public.  my partner  is calling the proshop as this happens, and I keep trying to be reasonable, but they're insistent that they can play whenever wherever as members, FYI no you still need a tee time and to check in.  Finally we see the GM coming out and these guys took of with the GM chasing them. If this was a one off I wouldn't be ranting but 3 times in my group alone, I know it's happened to other groups as well. I don't recall this happening at all the last few years either at the same course, I guess they changed the local water?

This sounds like a very poorly run golf course. Also, golf leagues tend to suck super hard when it comes to courtesy and respect for fellow golfers.

The thing that always kills me is that every golf community I have lived in has at least one serious money game, every weekend, that can somehow manage to hold their comps without overly disrupting general play.

Why can't leagues figure out a similar method?

Might not get brownie points here and, but im a member at a semi private course, and they raise prices yearly.  Every year they had 1-2 days of that type of league.  This year they have 4, Monday through Thursday.  As a member im told to eff off and take a hike.  How would you feel being a member paying dues and be told to eff off.  Yes some members are as you call them “entitled”, but some like myself work very hard to earn a living and be able to pay for the yearly membership to enjoy the membership perks.

Those leagues are paying to play.  This means your course must need the income and likely the member dues aren’t cutting it.

i don’t consider a perk being being able to walk out on a course and play whenever you feel like it despite what the tee sheet says.

Sad but true. Run into a few rude folks even at the driving range!  Cursing and screaming if I just walk by - but well outside the marked boundaries.  When one of them finished and walked away, neighboring golfer told me “yea don’t worry, he’s always like that”.   So weird

Douchebags be douchebags on and off the links.

Have met so many through the years, I have built up an immunity to them.

I tolerate them and then they go away.

If one starts with them on confrontation, I guarantee there will be charges filed and a civil suit after charges have been adjudicated.

Had similar stuff happen with my league at our previous course. We had a block of tee times that we'd use for our play every week. Unfortunately this course was not great about having a starter out by the first tee so I frequently had to deal with "members" who thought they could just show up and play whenever they wanted, when in fact all their "membership" got them was early access to tee times. One mom and her 2 kids was a "Karen" before that meme existed, had to go get the pro from inside the shop to explain the deal to her.

There’s a certain kind of person who joins a “semi private” course but who expects the benefits of a private course. And those are the a holes you have encountered. Rich but not rich enough.
Note: Most semi private course members are rational people, usually avid golfers, who don’t mind paying a little more to enjoy courses that are less crowded, and often, in better condition than munis. But these people understand and accept the tradeoffs with semi private membership.

Have been at a semi-private for about 30 years.  Membership rates have always been reasonable and I (usually but not the past two seasons) play enough that my average cost isn't all that much at all.  No priorities on tee times, but no issues getting on except for about 5 weekends a year when things get relatively crowded.  Discounts on guest green fees, discount for paying early in the year, discount on merch (rarely need it) and that's really about it and it's fine by me.

Course is well kept and 9/10 times on a weekday or weekend evening we want to go out and play there's hardly anyone out there.  The course appreciates members, especially I'm sure in the late winter when the early pay discount $ come rolling in, and there's the occasional accommodation the general public would never get.  Have yet to see someone get all worked up over something and try to play the "member" card, I'm sure it's happened, but a pretty nice mix of relatively easy going folks at the core who know that there will be a bit of a busy time every season and you accept it and celebrate when it's over, haha.

Telling someone to eff or saying they can’t play 4 of the 7 evenings per week is kind of the same thing.
i haven’t read it and nor do i need to read it I know what it says. “They can do whatever they want”. It’s not just semi private courses either. My buddy of mine is a member at fully private course and they do the same thing for “charity” tournaments.
Would I snap or get mad at someone playing in a league and make their life miserable? Absolutely not, not the point I’m making, but same people playing the league getting upset is equivalent to a member getting mad. They both paid to play. One 50ish for the league and one 8000 for the membership. So it goes both ways.
of course a semi private course is gonna take 2000 for the afternoon block when only 5-10 people will go out and play, it’s simple economics, but everyone needs to understand thats what you are signing up for to play at non exclusive courses.

Isn’t that the point of a membership? Being able to go out and play any given time ?

All I’m saying is that both sides have a point.
you get *****s on either ends. League guys being part of a league of morons and semi private members thinking they are part of Augusta National and unfortunately that’s life.
Being a member of this course is still valuable to me despite not being able to play “whenever” I want.

I play league at a private course every other Thursday that costs 50k just to walk through the door non equity. Not millions, but not cheap either and every member hates on us, and course is doing fine, but only reason why they do it is to get more members and these inflated rates (used to be 15k a few years ago).

every single person playing golf and not just golf paying for a service is entitled to some degree. You expect a service you paid a price for.
someone paying $50 for league, 8k for a senior private membership, 300 for a hotel or 200k for exclusive membership.  My membership was 4200 a few years ago and now it’s 8k. At 4200 not being able to play twice a week was totally fine with me but at 8k and not being able to play 4 times a week becomes totally different math. Nobody wants to be inconvenienced, but you have people who don’t tolerate anything that isn’t up to their standards, “Karens”. While I don’t agree with it, but I always put myself in their shoes of why they feel that way.

You didn’t read the post you replied to very well it seems.  I suggest you read it again

Do you really think being a member means you’re “able to go out and play any given time” or even as a member do you need to abide by what is on the club’s tee sheet?  Would you be this upset if foursomes of members were in the way and think you deserve to be able to go out when you want? Doubtful. So you are a member at a club that has these leagues…or charity events…that bring in extra income and you ARE NOT allowed to play then.  If they didn’t have hose events your dues would likely be much higher or the course be forced to close.

Hahahahahahhaahahahahah.

maybe at some of exclusive, equity, private memberships were then have 100 or so members

semi private get you access to book open tee time in advance of non memebers….and may or may not included unlimited greens fees.

i think you should read your agreement 🙂

this is a trip.

Because you’re not a member at a private club.  You’re a member at a semi private club.  Which is really just a public course that allows you to purchase a volume play pass.  Which means that you don’t have full control over the tee times relative to public play.

Devil's advocate here; perhaps the course management needs to better communicate with the "members" to make it clear exactly when and which nine this league is playing, and during that time, the league has exclusive use of that nine, so everyone else must stay off it, no exceptions. A lot of courses aren't very transparent about these things. So people get out there, run into a league filling up an entire nine, and then get all pissed off.

@Pnwpingi210 @Shilgy i am not disagreeing with you, I am just seeing the other side of this issue and being a member at a “semi private” course where they increased number of leagues that take 3 hours to play 9 holes.

my membership states “unlimited play” that’s what they sell it as.

I understand why they have leagues and events, no i dont think membership at a semi private gets me a wank after a round, but if a membership says “unlimited golf” some people will take it as unlimited golf, just like unlimited data that telecom providers sell you, there are restrictions and slowing down of data speeds.  So nobody should complain about it?  A vast majority of people complain about telcos slowing things down after certain amount of data used.  I am literally on a vacation right now, and they advertised happy hour during certain times, but when we go there the bar was closed.  Airlines overbook, someone whom booked first might get kicked off because someone paid more for that seat, should the first person not complain? Someone will always complain about it.  So why should members not complain about some league where they paid for 100-150x more than the league?

OP has no idea how many leagues that course has, OP did not say how much the members pay, and their agreement.  At the end of the day members paid ahead of time and even if it’s a semi private they should not be treated like scums because they already paid and not brining any more money that given day.

And now that you mentioned about my agreement, I just found it in my email and it says,  “Some tee times might be blocked to outside events”.  So at which point should a member start complaining?  1 event a week? 2? 4? 5?  7? It’s different for every person, someone will always be unhappy, someone from league whom paid to play, a member whom wants to play at exact same time as league.

This happened to me.  Part of the perks is being able to book 4 weeks in advance, which i did, i had some friends coming to town to visit me.  They canceled a tee time because of some guy bought out league for that day.  Are we saying i should not complain? Again, i didn;t i went elsewhere I know enough people that work in the golf industry to get a tee time, but just asking.
