Utility Iron build? I230

Hey all,

Picked up a used set of i230s 3-P this summer with DG TI X100s and they’ve been absolutely awesome for my game.

3i has been in and out of bag as mostly a tee club on some courses.

Was thinking about throwing a Hybrid shaft (Ventus Black HB 9x) in it to try and squeeze out a little more distance vs buy a new $450-500 utility iron set up when I already have a club I like.

my club builder says he won’t have any problem sanding shaft down to fit and adding weight if we need to.

Anyone done something similar to this and have success? Or waste of time? Any thoughts appreciated TIA

I530 is better suited for a utility/driving iron role.

Not quite sure you mean about sanding it down? Aren't they shafts in the i230's .355" and the hybrid shaft .335"? If anything he is going to have to shim it and add weight depending on how long it is.

Hybrid shafts are typically .370

Wont have any trouble fitting any shaft into an I230 head, the hosel diameter is very oversized. .355 tapers shimmed to .370 are still a loose fit.

I asked my fitter the same thing a few month ago and he told me that in his experience, he never saw huge improvement by going with a hybrid shaft versus a steel one.

In the purpose of building a driving iron of course. Like, i have the 3 iron. But the distance was very close to the 4 iron and wanted to add distance to the 3 iron and asked about graphite. We tried, and i didnt saw huge improvement with graphite.

Would suggest a combination of graphite to increase swing speed and a head which increase ball speed would help, but only one of those levers is unlikely to have a massive impact in isolation.
