Happy Gilmore 2 Review Thread (Spoilers)

I'm surprised this hasn't been added, so I'll start.

 

TL;DR: I went in with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised. It ran out of steam at the end but was entertaining.

 

Highlights: Scotty, John Daly, member berries

Lowlights: Hal (Ben Stiller), MaxxiGolf, sons at times

 

First and foremost, this is a 2020's Adam Sandler comedy. And a sequel to a 30-year old movie. It is not going to be Shakespeare, Coppola, or Kubrick. If you are expecting this, you will be disappointed. I went in with low expectations and hoping that there was some freshness layered on top of nostalgia, and that is what I got.

 

While I know there is a lot of hate for it, I do not mind them using Victoria's death as a way to drive the movie. It made sense it would stop him from golfing and her absence made his struggles more believable, as she was his rock in the first movie. The boys were entertaining at times, but I often felt that they took it about 10 seconds too long with each scene they were in. The AA scenes just seemed to be in there to ensure Ben Stiller could come back, and I think the movie would have been far better without him, though the other AA members watching through the windows at the end was an OK comedic touch. Shooter turning friend was predictable and welcome, especially with them using old insults back at each other and the motivation at the end - I think an "enhanced" shooter would have been stupid. Slim was not really worth mentioning, as he kinda disappeared even though he was still in the movie. Bad Bunny was highly entertaining.

 

As far as the golfers go, Scotty was amazing and the "Not again" got me an actual laugh out loud moment. His "Sheffie" on the putt also looks like it broke Chris McDonald IRL, as there is a creeping smile when they cut. John Daly was amazing and should win an Oscar for best supporting actor - pump, pump, pass out. Bryson claiming Rory's breasts was another great moment. It was a lot of fun seeing the current tour guys in this and it looked like they had a blast. While I didn't enjoy the "that's what she said" as much as everyone else, it was a fun scene. I was literally jaw dropped when I saw that he got Nicklas, Couples, and Els to be in this. Trevino was already in the first, which was not surprising, but what a table. I was hugely disappointed that Tiger was not in this (and to a lesser degree, Mickleson) and would love to know why. Charley Hull and Paige Spiranic, and Nelly Korda were there, but nothing burgers, which is a shame. I would have loved it if they had Charley yelling with a cigarette in her mouth. Reggie Bush as 8-Ball was fun. f*** the Chiefs, but Kelce was hate-able as the waiter.

 

The story was OK. They gave him a reason to pursue golf again, but I wish there had been a better antagonist than Maxxi golf. It felt like they were trying to make fun of LIV and TGL but couldn't decide which. There's not much of a story, so I don't have a ton to say beyond that.

 

Overall, I enjoyed it and laughed quite a bit. I'm not upset that I have to watch it again so my wife and kid can see it. I'll look for some more things I missed and likely enjoy it again but will probably not watch it for a while after that.

 

Overall movie, 5/10. Adam Sandler sequel movie, 8/10

It was entertaining until the maxi goofy shenanigans. Might need to do a second watch because I’m sure I missed some other cameos by lesser known people.

The OP review was much more measured than I would have been. I didn’t love it, but I knew what I was in for, but even then I felt less intelligent when the credits rolled.

I expected it to be a train wreck, especially with all of the celeb/ athlete cameos. But, I was pleasantly surprised.  The Maxi golf stuff was stupid, and the drinking from random objects gave me more eye rolls than laughs.

 

Scottie is instantly more likeable after this.  Loved Charlie, loved Daly, loved MJF, loved Bad Bunny.

 

Agree with OP one the 8/10 for a Sandler sequel.

I wasnt expecting much either and was hopig it wasnt terrible, and it wasnt. Don't take the movie too seriously. 

I watched it with my wife and three sons (who play golf 11, 14, 16). They laughed and cackled all the way through it. Watching with the kids certainly increased the enjoyment of the movie. 

Loved the cameos, Scottie, Will, Jack, Faldo, Rory, all so good!! They would have had fun making it!!

I just realized Nelly Korda and Nancy Lopez as the mental institute judges for Shooter McGavin’s trial both voted nay for his release.

 

“Negative Nelly/Nancy” is a popular term and they both judged negatively. I wonder if that was written on purpose with those two in mind.

I thought it was a lot of fun. It's hard for a sequel coming out so long after the original to find a balance of "give the people what they want" vs something unique. I think the throwbacks were about right to keep Happy Gilmore 1 fans entertained, but also all of the contemporary "of the moment" cameos likely did a good job bringing in a newer audience. End of the day, it's an Adam Sandler movie...you go in with the right expectations and you'll be entertained. 

 

I do wish Tiger made an appearance!

I don’t think “It’s an Adam Sandler movie” excuses sloppy writing and storyline development. He has made a few good movies incorporating his brand of nonsense that FAR exceed this effort.

I agree it’s hard to do a sequel 30 years after the original.  I enjoyed the movie for what it was.  I really liked Sheffler and Zalatoris, and their ability to poke fun at themselves.

Yeah, but he also had 30 years to figure out what would work and what wouldn't. I know Spanglish and Funny People weren't him helming things, but those and movies like Happy Gilmore, Billy Madison, and Click show what he can do when he's not phoning it in. 

 

Big miss to take so long and put out something people are turning off before it's over.

had a long list of celebs and pga legends and or stars all on board for cameos  - a they just got lazy with the storyline. some funny moments but this had potential and seems the goal was just to tik tok there way through a movie. complete opposite of top gun 2 

 

adam sandler should've demanded better. seems like this was a fun movie to make and a less fun movie to watch

Nailed it! AS got $475 mil guaranteed for 4 NF films. Fun to make and a good time for him and the others making it… Viewers b damned! Haha
