Tried The GT2 7 Wood

mudgolf

Recommended Posts

I just demoed the Titleist GT2 7 Wood with the Tensei 1k blue 65 shaft.  It was remarkably easy to hit from all different kinds of lies and even off the tee.  It launched high and landed softly even from the rough. I envisioned it replacing my 3 hybrid.  The problem is that I seemed to hit it a little shorter than my 4 hybrid.  Needless to say, I was very surprised.  It was so easy to hit, I would love to game it, just not sure how to get more distance out of it.

Thoughts??

I was fit for the same club but turned down to 20.25 and +1/2 inch.  Definitely goes high and sits soft.  It would be a 3 iron/3 hybrid replacement for me.

I haven’t trusted the fitting enough to order it.  In a previous fitting I was fit to same setup but with 1k Black 85-S.  I haven’t fallen in love with the feel of GT2 so I’ve bought a G440 Max 7W off BST (I play a G430 Max 3w).  GT2 will be a backup plan for me if I don’t like the G440.

I love it. I did a casual fitting the other day for the GT2 7w, comparing it to 3 different heads over two fittings. All just in stock stiff or regular shafts. Idea being I want this to be an extremely easy clubhead to hit without any thought or effort. Tried all the major brands except Ping.

Same setup with the 65 Tensei Blue beat out everything. I compared one 7w model from each brand--sometimes the low spin, sometimes the max. Callaway's TD came the closest, but nothing felt as solid through contact as the GT2. I installed an 80g shaft in there and it's been a wonderful club. In fact, I'm so happy with it, I plan to compare my 5w to Titleist's offerings next time I'm at the shop.

I played with the GT2 7 wood again today.  It for sure falls between my 3 and 4 hybrids.   It is so easy to hit, but occasionally "spins up" and loses 20 to 30 yard of distance.  I tried out the 5 wood as well, but it is a different animal..... much heavier and not as easy to swing.  Thinking of trying the Elyte Heaven Wood.  Has anyone tried that out?

I demoed this a few weeks ago and found the same thing. Loved how it felt. Was easy to hit high and straight. Didn't carry as far as I expected.

97ish driver swing speed, I was getting about 195-200 carry from the 7 wood. I expected maybe 10 yards more. It's about the same, maybe a bit less carry than my 3H at 20.5*. But with a much steeper landing angle. So the 7W would definitely hold greens better.

I tried the TSR 7w...spun too much for me. Easy to launch, shoot to the moon....but was tough to play in the wind.

Last year I bought the AISmoke TD 7w...was great...this year I got the Elyte TD...it is a beast!

Its a 215 to 230y club for me and easy to hit. The TD version knocked the spin off and took out the left side.

I was considering getting this club, but it seems like the overall feedback is that it plays about 10-15 yards shorter than expected?  Maybe that relates to the shaft being used?

For what it's worth, I have the GT2 7W in the bag and have tested the G440 7W. I found they both carried the exact same distance (215 yards for me on Trackman) but the GT2's peak height was about 15 feet lower -- 105ish vs. 120ish with the G440. On the course, I really like the trajectory I see from the GT2. I do wonder if I turned the G440 down to 20 or 19.5, if it would rein in that peak height some and give me about 5 extra yards. Something I'll experiment with at some point when I have some trade-in credit.

Its my favorite club in the bag. Mine is the exact same setup, all stock with same shaft and its super easy to hit. For me it replaced the 4H-ish club and 200-215 in distance. Everyone is my group loves it as well and I'm trying to get a couple to buy their own and stop hitting mine.

I have not hit the Titleist, but I do have a TM Qi10 7 wood (21°). I would be interested in seeing what a heavier shaft would do for you. A 65 gram shaft just seems light for a 7 wood. It is possible you are not maximizing launch and spin and losing distance. You might find a heavier shaft will bring the flight down a touch along with spin and you will pick up that distance you are looking for. I know, unfortunately it is very difficult to find places that have heavier shafts for fairway woods.

I currently have an 85 gram shaft in mine and love it. From the fairway it launches high and lands soft. It is very easy to hit from the rough. And the biggest surprise for me was how well it does out of fairway bunkers. It is literally a cheat code out of bunkers. For reference, I am around 108 ss w/ driver and my stock 7 wood is around 220 carry. BTW, I also carry a 4 utility iron (22°) which has similar carry off of the tee, but gets there very differently. I like having a low option for tee balls or windy conditions.

Really hard to fit these indoors.  Two biggies you need grass and dirt for:

1). Turf interaction

2). Angle of Attack

No reason it should go shorter.  If shaft is longer than your 4H, club head speed should be higher.  If it's not, change the shaft.  65g is light like someone else said.

If speed is not the issue, then it's launching too high or spinning too much.  Maybe both.  Might need to look at a different model or less loft.

I decided on my transitions from irons to hybrids to woods based on peak height.  And it gives me good gaps and all my clubs can hold a green.
