Ben hogan 1958 saber sunburst!!

Hey all. 

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted but I had to jump on here and share my recent purchase that I’m going to be drooling over for awhile. I somehow lucked up on this near mint set of 1958 saber sunburst irons on 2ndswing and to beat it all they were listed as being in poor condition so to say I got them for a song is a understatement. I’m not one to brag usually but I’m going to a little bit with these lol. I hope you all enjoy them. Included pictures of the faces of the 7 and pw. I’ll be taking them to the range soon to see how they compare to my gamers which are 1999 apex blades.

One more thing I want to mention is it’s unreal how modern these blades look to be almost 70 years old. When compared to the 99 apex the lines on them are near identical. 🤯 saber is on the left and 99 apex on the right

Man, them things are beat to death. I think you should donate them to me as placeholders until I can find a nice set.

Unbelievably gorgeous! Personal favorite I’m worried will never be obtainable. I’m envious and congratulate you sir. 
 

It’s so hard to get over how modern these look. Someone must of had them restored. Interesting seeing the long hozel. Believe they shorted that the next year.

Thank you sir. And hopefully you’ll stumble across a set like I did. And I agree with you that someone probably had these restored. I’m torn about playing them and dinging them up. I’m definitely going to add the correct paint fill back to them and they may just get used off range mats and then hang out in the office. I’m curious how they will stack up with the apex’s. Ill have to report back with launch monitor numbers

Yes gotta play them! I’d use iron covers to minimize bag chatter. 
 

Please don’t tell me you picked these up at either 2ndSwing Minnesota locations. That would really sting finding out they were that close to my grasp. I couldn’t swing that kinda purchase right now anyways.

Congratulations - you have my Hogan "Holy Grail" set (and I don't care what condition they're in)....
btw - Jeff Sheets designed them when Spalding bought Hogan:
"...This iron is one of my all time favorite designs. I had always admired Mr. Hogan’s company and had my dream job drop into my lap when Spalding purchased the Ben Hogan Company in 1997. My biggest challenge in designing the next generation of Hogan products: Do NOT design a Top-Flite club with “Hogan” stamped on it. This next club I designed must be an authentic Hogan in every aspect. I was ready to pursue this project only after doing much homework, studying every Hogan design I could find and by interviewing past Hogan Company employees. In my research of studying Mr. Hogan’s design characteristics I ended up creating the infamous Hogan iron chart using a 1-megapixel digital camera and black fabric backdrop as I photographed every iron on my credenza “photo studio”. I had two big assets available to me in the execution of the new Hogan Apex irons. The first was my CAD operator Charles Lovett who had a keen eye for blades after he had been hired away from Mizuno. The second was my prototyping contractor Tom Stites, an ex-Hogan R&D staffer who would convert our CAD files to hittable specimens. The ’99 Apex is the epitome of a Hogan forged iron design. It was the first Hogan iron to be forged by Endo Manufacturing in Japan. Stite’s group, Impact Engineering, did such a fine job on the final prototypes that we were able to laser scan them for creating the forging dies..."

Yeah they shipped out from a Minnesota location 🫣. They had them posted for $175.

That stings a lot. I would have never thought to look at 2ndSwing. Congrats again on the find and the deal.
