Feels like we are seeing a lot more higher lofted drivers on tour. 10.25ish here, Gerard has a 12 degree, saw another 11 degree last week - is this a new trend?

I'd love for someone to cover the lives of these "marginal" tour players. How do they live? Where do they make their money? What is a typical week like for them?

In this realm, I'm thinking of guys that have a "marginal" status on any tour. They play events sometimes, make the cut sometimes, if they walk with money, it's like $32k.

So, how does a Camillo Villegas or Arron Baddeley survive? Where are they making their money? How it is that they continue to stick around?

I think these "marginal" players survive just fine when they have won 5/4 times on the PGA Tour and made around $25M in official money thus far 🤷🏽‍♂️

Mr. Curiosity to the rescue.

If there's any way that I can help you get to the $25mil. lifetime earnings mark - please let me know. I'm good for a $10 donation.

I don’t think j meant any disrespect. Pick another “marginal” player with let’s say only 1-2 wins.
But Aaron B has $24 million in career earnings. Thats less than a million a year. He has 6 kids. With the cost of living these days and price of college… He just might be living paycheck to paycheck! Haha

Not sure I follow your chain of thought or the ad hominem but my apologies if you find facts offensive/objectionable 😂. The question posed - and that I tried to address - was how do they survive and why do they stick around. I'd say $25M on course earnings is a pretty decent sum. That said, your question does raise an even more interesting one, imo. As these early/mid-forty's players start seeing their on course earnings dwindle, do they stick around or become on-course reporters while they wait to become eligible to play the Champions Tour? I'm assuming they'll play the CT given how much money there's on that tour now. I can see Villegas taking a Media gig and play the odd tourney here and there - a la Kisner - not sure about Baddeley.

I have a friend who played the Tour for 12 years…he has one win and has made over 12.5M and let me tell you he’s doing just fine. If you’re smart and invest properly and use your sponsorship money to help, you can pretty much be set for life by your mid-40s….and that’s not living I poverty! You also have to remember that the PGA Tour has one of the best retirement plans of any pro sports organization.

A million a year is nice $ if ya live somewhere with low/no tax and can buy a nice house in the $400k range.

I used to work in professional golf on the mini tour level but we had tons of guys who had won or played multiple years on the PGA Tour and they, like the poster above said we’re doing just fine. Couple guys who were fully vested and had insurance for themselves and family for life and the PGAT Pension.

Camilo used to be a 120 mph ss guy with driver back in the day when he was with Cobra.  Wtf happened?!!!  He still looks very fit and still obviously works out.  I've seen him play in a few tourneys over the past couple years and his ball speed is around 165 which equates to around 110 ss.

Well, you can easily double this amount with sponsors, so guy is worth $60m+.

$23 million

- Something that continues to go long off the tee in the fairway
- Something that is a fairway finder when needed and long
- Something that high, consistent and helps with par 5’s
-  Something to help with long par3’s and short par 4’s

-  Something metal, lots of them and go the gaps I need
- Something metal, 2x of them and helps me 120y and in
- Putters - limited rotation because I cannot afford misses

Golf is what you make of it.  Play grateful and accepting. We are all lucky to have it.

Rather than expecting lets all try and appreciate instead.
Treat people the way you want to be treated

Then Baddely and add sponsor $,  Aaron Baddeley has earned a total career earnings of approximately $22,051,344, averaging about $1,002,334 per year. In 2024, he earned $155,599 so far, and his best year was in 2006-07, where he earned $3,441,119

Smart man if that's the case.  Living within your means unlike a lot of pro athletes.  Hopefully a good portion of his money is tied up in investments.

Okay, now that Aaron n Camilo have been adequately excused from the convo. (Thnx WRX!) Perhaps someone ‘more marginal’ can be in the doc. j mentioned he was interested in seeing.

100%.  Then if these players are marketable, the money from endorsements blow away anything made in earnings.

Ian Poulter is one, guy hardly won anything, instead a Ryder Cup hero, yet has one of the biggest Ferarri collections and multi million $ houses around the world.
