DFW course feedback

Recommended Posts

couple of courses i haven't played - are they worth it?
okay, i've played a ton of courses in the DFW metroplex, but there are a few courses i am missing and just want to get some feed back from others if i am actually missing out on anything.

- chase oaks, plano - i've heard its tough, and good, but the same people that say this don't think texas star is all that (i think its the best public course in the metro).

- ridgeview ranch, plano - don't really know much about this course

- golf club at frisco lakes, frisco - i know it just opened, but thats it

- southern oaks, burleson - i've heard its tight and tree lined, similar to bear creek, then someone else told me its nothing like that

- mansfield national, mansfield - i know nothing about it

- northern challenge, sherman - i know its pretty new

any feedback, especially on chase oaks, ridgeview ranch and frisco lakes would be great as i'll be up in plano saturday.

Here are my thoughts on these.............

- chase oaks, plano - I heard they made some changes, but this course seems very "tricked up" to me. I recall it played short, but somewhat tricky and tough, with several holes that require precise shot placement, and a draw/fade off the teebox. Unmemorable IMO.

- ridgeview ranch, plano - All around residential housing, a decent public track, I used to play here a lot, but again, found it uninspiring. some holes require long irons or fairway woods off the tee for proper placement. Cheep and a good location, but nothing to shout about.

- golf club at frisco lakes, frisco - iNever played it.

- southern oaks, burleson - iNever played it.

- mansfield national, mansfield - i used to play here a lot. A "Bomber"'s course, there are various holes where you can really hit it long and hard, with little to no fear of trouble or O.B. Other holes are troublesome, but overall it was very enjoyable to me. Very inexpensive as well.

- northern challenge, sherman - iNever played it.

hope that helps! STT

Lived here about 10 years now, played everywhere pretty much at least once...here's my 2 cents:

- chase oaks, plano - Bizarre layout, hard because half the tee shots are blind, some decent holes, now where near TX Star quality. I've played 3 or 4 times, just never really thought worth the time, did break 80 once there, but still don't like the place.

- ridgeview ranch, plano - nice layouut, Jeff Brauer design, unfortunately conditioning went downhill with prices. Its a muni (sort of as Plano res get discount) plan on 5 hours plus as too hard for most of the 20+ hdcps who have to play the tips ;-P

- golf club at frisco lakes, frisco - i know it just opened, but thats it

- southern oaks, burleson - haven't been there in couple of years, need ot go back. they softened up a bit, as was long, really long (#9 was like 495 uphill inot wind par 4). If greens are in good shape, it's awesome layout, scenic, elevation changes, few parallel holes, not sure how many houses have been planted. worth a try.

- mansfield national, mansfield - hard hat layout, way overrated,

- northern challenge, sherman - no idea....

Have you played, Trails of Frisco? near Plano, that's a golf course :-D

I played Mansfield National last week. It's in good shape. Greens are fast and wide open fairways on most holes. I also played for the first time two days ago at Bent Tree and let me tell you that's a nice course.

we are doing work to the bent tree clubhouse and i've been out there a couple times but haven't played. suppousedly before we are done i am going to get to play, but not holding my breath

yeah, last september. i thought it was pretty decent. it would have been more enjoyable if i hadn't been dragged out to play the tips, although didn't think it was that bad from the tips. there is something wrong when you are the longest person in the group and yet the only one who thinks the tips are too much golf course.

I'm not sure what your budget is, but don't forget The Tribute in The Colony which should be 30-40 minutes away depending upon where you are staying in Plano.

The Golf Club at Frisco Lakes is in the same area.

I give my best 2 cents also.

Chase Oaks...a little tricked up but not a bad play. Nowhere near Texas Star.

Ridgeview....too many houses, and going towards goat ranch conditions, money is better spent elsewhere as you're not missing anything.

Frisco Lakes....like others I haven't played it yet, but have heard some good reviews from reliable sources, has to be worth a shot at some point this spring/summer

Southern Oaks....This is one of my preferred courses, not as cosmetically appealing as Star, but layout is just as challenging with several holes that rival the best in DFW...if you like Star you will like this course.

Mansfield National....Links style front wooded back, alot of people don't like the way the course flows, a few tough holes but for the most part not extremely challenging. Usually in good condition and for the price worth a trip to give it a go. Greens are in good shape right now.

Sherman.....no idea.

Frisco Lakes - Only played it once due to a deep discount they offered back in January. New course, somewhat rough around the edges but an overall decent layout. Tough to judge a course in the winter when so much is dormant. It was also very wet. Not to be confused with the Trails of Frisco, which is a very nice course and was the venue for a Duramed Futures tournament the last couple of years, but sadly not this year.

Few others that I have played in case you want to try.

Westridge Golf Club (McKinney) Interesting course that has 6 par 3's, 6 par 4's and 6 par 5's.

Firewheel Bridges (Garland) Greens are very soft and in exceptional conditions.

Lake Park 18 (Lewisville) Confidence booster. You will shoot at least 5 shot lower here than any other course.

Riverside Golf Club (Grand Prairie) Very nice and long course. You will love or hate the 18th hole. Hardest par 3's in DFW, my opinion.

played chase oaks, and liked 8-18. 1-7 i didn't think were anything special, but 9-18 was interesting, although a little confusing with as much as you loop around certain spots on the cart path. not a course for walking.

appreciate it, but i've played those courses. i live near riverside and while i know its not the greatest, i enjoy it a lot. i know the course pretty well and can typically go out there and have fun and score well.

A bit late but Northern Challenge here in Sherman is my home course. It is nice. But is still very young as far as golf courses go. There is not a clubhouse or "proper parking". It is nothing more then a Trailer with a rock road and rock parking. The course is kept very nice, and they are doing some improvements. White sand bunkers, and dressing it up a bit. The front 9 is very tactical which some thinking involved. The back 9 is merely rip it and grip it. Let me know if you want some pictures!

Guys, I'm new to the Dallas area...and have only played a few selected private clubs with the exception of The Colony. Ive played Glen Eagles both the Kind aQueen, Los Colinas CC, and Preston Trails. I am currently trying to decide on a private course to join, but would love to get and and meet some guys in the area to play with. Shoot me a PM if anyone is interested in playing sometime..

If you have not tried it, check out Indian Creek in Carrolton. Best maintained muni in DFW and a beaut of a course.

The only downside is when it rains. For whatever reason IC has a serious drainage problem. We thought we were going to catch Malaria one summer morning when it hadn't rained in a week. We actually paid the cart girl money to get us Off (that led to a whole lot of double entendres between her and us which had us all in stitches.....).

Sounds like there are a lot of DFW golfers available for an outing!
