What does 588 stand for/mean...if anything?

I know some names/numbers don't mean anything....but most do when it comes to clubs (TA, SV, SM....).
I guess you have model #'s that may not stand for anything (i.e., Titleist 680, 681, 690...) - simply a designations.

Or does 680 mean something?

So what gives with the 588? - where did it come from?

When Roger Cleveland launched Cleveland golf, his original idea was just to produce wedges and putters. When he designed the 588 (his 5th wedge, in '88) it was a revelation. Everyone wanted one. The rest, as they say, is history.

 

20 years on, and it's still being produced. Apart from the Ping Anser, there aren't many clubs you can say that about.

When we were youngsters a mate got his first car at 17 and it was a Mk II Ford Escort, c.1977.

Not true. Roger Cleveland started the company as Cleveland Classics in 1979 with the sole intention of making exact replicas of popular designs from the 1940s and 1950s.
