Did I mess up? Ping G2 Lady Irons

Hey Everyone,

I realize this may belong in the ladies forum, but since the stuff over there seems more ladies-news related I figured I'd post in the equipment section. I was looking to buy a set of irons for my girlfriend. She's been taking lessons for awhile now, but this would be her first set of clubs. I was looking to spend around $250ish on a set of irons. At first I was leaning towards one of last year's Nickent 3dx hybrid iron sets. At the same time though I was keeping an eye out for some used Pings since I've heard great recommendations towards them. I stumbled on this set of G2 irons, and seeing they had the lower lie angle and soft graphite shafts I figured they'd be perfect for her (she's 5'2"/3"ish, slow swing speed). With the 15% live cashback they come out to $234. Yes, the pictures are too small to really see any detail, but I was trusting the seller's description and feedback (I'm always up for an ebay gamble! :) )

I hadn't realized until after I bought them that there's a set of G2L irons, different from the standard G2 irons. I thought the ladies irons were like other manufactures who simply put a lady's shaft onto the same head. After looking into it more, I saw that the G2L lofts are slightly shifted from the G2 heads. And apparently these ones in the auction aren't even lady's shafts. They're just soft shafts, which lead the buyer to say that they'd be great for ladies. Yes, I realize I should have done more research on ping - I didn't realize how many different customization options this brand has.

 

I hate that feeling of deciding to think more about a purchase more before buying but then finding the next day someone bought them, so I figured I'd just get them and resell them if it turns out to be a bad choice. What are your thoughts?

The only real problem that I see is they are going to be too long for her. She's only 5'2" and more than likely these are going to be standard men's length.

Thanks BDLz, I did forget to ask about the length in my post. How much shorter would the actual G2L's be? I searched but couldn't find anything. I noticed on ping's sizing charts for men, that a 5'2" height corresponds to a -1/2" shaft length. Would just cutting the 1/2" off increase the stiffness enough to not make it worth it? Should I scrap this whole idea and just go with the Nickent's?

You just bought these, I think that you bought a set of womens pings for a good price. the G2L are exactly what it states Ladies irons. He says the shafts are originals and that means they are ladies length and ladies shafts unless they were a custom order and all the G2L's came standard with the Red color code dot. From what I remember from working at a shop in the days where the G2's were hot, you couldn't order the G2L's with any other shafts. I think you have noooo need to worry you should be getting a set of women's irons that may be perfect for your girlfriend.

Thanks for the reply Will, but the seller just sent me a message saying he made a mistake listing them. They're standard men's length, and are the regular stiffness shaft, not the soft. So these are a no-go. Now the question is whether I keep looking for another set or just spring for the Nickents. I like that the Pings are Pings lol, but I think the Nickents may be more useable for her.

Keep looking for another set of Ping lady irons OR Cally BB lady irons (these are what my wife plays and are very good)

 

It's very important to get a set of women's specific irons especially since she is just starting out.

 

I made the mistake of reshafting a set of Ping Eye 2s for my wife and they ended up being way too light for her. I think the women's specific iron heads must be heavier to make up for the lighter/shorter shafts.

Hi, my 15 yo daughter uses the men's version which is called G2 EZ as a 4 handicap. I think they are 4' difference in lofts. The set was a 5 HL 7-sw to make up the range in lofts. She is 5' 2" as well and has no issues with the length. They are great clubs and there is always someone looking for PINGS if they do not workout.

I would say if you going for playability, and not that bling or "namebrand" appeal, go with the nickents or even look at some of the newer adams stuff I am sure you could get a set of A2OS for women on ebay with the 15% for less than 250.

Ok, two votes for the pings and one for the nickents. Still scratching my head. I've only seen one direct comparison on the forum in which one person went from the G2's to the nickents and liked the nickents more, which is making me lean a little more in that direction.

throw in a ladies Cleveland Launcher W driver for $29.99 + shipping, and matching 3-wood, and matching 5-wood, and all she'll need are a putter, balls, bag, and shoes!

Well I got the Nickents for $230. Although the 15% off didn't qualify because of their checkout system :)

I talked to dcbogeyman, the member who I mentioned had owned both sets and he recommends the nickents much more.
