Do you think Tiger will make the switch?

Recommended Posts

I'm sure he'll play whatever Nike tells him to play. Or is he really beyond endorsement now?

In his contract with Nike, it says that he doesnt have to use ANY Nike golf clubs if he wishes to play with another brand of clubs. He choses to play Nike's. Wonder why...?

It's hard to describe Mr Knight's and Tiger's relationship, but it goes beyond contracts and money.

So let me see if I get what you are saying here, you are saying that tiger just has rebadged gear?

hmm... :)(I personally don't think so)

oh here is the link...some of you might have read this already but thought it was related to this topic with all the comments about Tiger marketing things. btw i would not be surprised if he switches irons. but that scotty putter will probably be in his bag until he retires....

Did you use "The Onion" as a serious source for Tiger's marketing techniques?

I agree with bambooluv there is noway that is going to happen. Besides what would the other companies gain? They can't come out and say he is playing their clubs with a Nike logo on them. If they aren't going to make any money from the general public on sales it doesn't make sense!

well it was a fact that the statement i made above was true the only reason he is with nike is because nike has a empire outside golf and no company can pay him what nike pays him thats the truth and another thing if nike only want him playin there gear so much why does his contract say he can use a better product if he finds one puts some doubt there. example nike make putters and he uses a scotty cameron and before u all jump down my neck i know scotty cameron make the best putters and also i wa relaying what the nike rep told me i work in a golf shoop and we asked him about tigers contract and thats what he told as i also stated he told us tiger at some stage in his career was paid for how many logoes he wore JUST BECAUSE YOU PLAY A PRODUCT U DONT HAVE TO BELIEVE IN IT prime example rory sabbatini u think he likes adams no aaron baddeley same deal badds could off hooked up with any one buts he goes for the most money club sponsorships for pros are bascially money based

Sorry, not even close to true. There must be 100,000 Nike reps out there, 'cause everyone knows one.

Even if a rep did, in fact, tell you, I assure you a rep wouldn't know. Only the very top company brass would be privy to this information, not a product rep.

I'm not sure which is funnier - the fact you posted this, or the fact you believe it. Or think we believe it.

Wasn't a ruckus what you planned?

On the off chance you seriously believe what you are saying, this has been discussed in detail by people who really do work for Nike and by those with knowledge of Tiger and the industry. I suggest you do a search and read a few of the threads.

The fact that your rep was from the States is irrelevant. He wouldn't know. If a rep told you he did know, he was lying to you. If Tiger was playing ProVx and Mizuno irons, anyone who would be in a position to know would be under any number of non-disclosure agreements, and would not divulge the information to a store clerk.

but he still does not use minzuno blades

hehe nice one Gsimonds. What people fail to realize is it doesnt matter who forges Nike designed blades for tiger, it still came from a calaboration,(which I'm sure include tom stites, nikeproto, and team @ oven.) I doubt titleist, taylormade, etc...have their own foundries (and yet they all put out great equipment as well.) Go figure :)

Reps are cool and all,(but they are working drones just like you and I.) I once had a Ping fitting specialist tell me that tiger played the project X shafts in his irons :). Not to disrespect any reps but like any kind of working enviroment you get those that are irreplaceable, and some that need to try harder to get their "tour" career going hehe. I believe I have read on many reports on espn, cbs-sports, fox-sports, etc (yea I'm on them alot) that the details of his contract are actually confidential.

Will this argument ever die?!

The fact of the matter here is... never trust what a rep tells you. Reps are told to tell you whatever it takes to keep you happy. Reps are not privy to this kind of information and never will be. But the good news is the information is out there and is a matter of public record. You just have to now where to find it and be willing to dig deep into legal research.

To kin and bambooluv.... you are both right to an extent. Here is what I know, information gained with the help and guidance from a certain higher up in a particular OEM not to be named and a legal friend.

When Tiger left Titleist and contracted with Nike, Tiger himself put into the contract that for the first year of his contract he would play Whatever he wanted. This was stated to give Tom Stites a year to develop an iron to Tiger's liking. But there was a stipulation to this statement. After that year, Tiger would test the irons developed by Tom Stites, and if by this time, these clubs were still not to Tiger's liking then the foresaid statement would be extended for another 2 years. This would have given Tiger up to 3 years to play whatever he wanted. At the conclusion of these 3 years, Tiger would be locked into a 9 club contract to include his driver and 8 irons. This also included sponsership bonuses for each additional Nike club he put in the bag.

Now, no one knows for sure how long it took Tom Stites to develop a club that Tiger actually kept in his bag. But rumor has it; it was a little more than a year. And no one knows for sure what clubs he was playing in the meantime. Some people have said that they were Mizuno's forged by Muira, and that could very well be true. Due to a certain stipulation in Tiger's contract with Titleist; it was understood amongst three parties (Tiger, Titleist, and Muira) that no party would reveal that Tiger's Titleist irons were in fact forged by Muira. In the interview where Tiger denied that any club he had was forged by Muira, he was just holding up his part in the contract. This stipulation in the Tileist contract rolled over into his Nike years but has since expired. (By the way, since the contract is expired, an employee at Muira has posted one of Tiger's Titleist sets on ebay, link added)

As for the rest of his clubs, I couldn't tell you. But Tiger's ball is not a ProV1. Tiger's ball contract has both Nike and Bridgestone contracted. If you didn't already know, Bridgestone makes Nike balls. Tiger's ball is not any ball that you can buy. It is a ball that was specifically made by Bridgestone for Tiger. The ball is the Nike One Platinum TW with red arrows and is on the USGA Conforming Ball List. Tiger's ball is softer than any other ball on the market and has been deemed by the OEM as unmarketable. From what I have heard, it is closest the Bridgestone B-330-s, but again that is just speculation.

This information is a matter of public record. If you have the time one day, you should be able to go to your local courthouse and do some research and find the same information.

Your ignorance regarding golf equipment, most notably this topic, is surpassed only by your obvious inability to provide reasonably acceptable / understandable written communication.

Most recently (since 2007 PGA onward) Tiger has been using the retail Nike One Plats.

well said texcrom.

KIn, Ive heard that mizuno forges Tigers clubs. If i asked the nike rep, he would tell me something different. Reps will tell you anything. If the callaway rep said Tiger was playing a set of Phils back-ups you would post that as truth.

As far as Bridgestone making a softer ball for Tiger, could that be close to the new RX that hits shelves next week?

Excuse my lack of patience...

The "new" Bridgestones aren't new! They've been selling in Japan as Tourstage balls for the last two years... GAHasdfas

aside from your "moron" statement in the other post, this is the funniest post I've seen in a while... Do you think anyone can, could or would tell Tiger what to play? Nike thinks he walks on water (have you seen his latest video game shoot, walking on water...) and they're certainly not going to make him do anything other than what he wants to...

Why not? I mean, would you drive a Buick by choice?

I believe he plays the clubs he wants to play and they are Nike. The Buick is to get his stuff to his private jet!
