TaylorMade R7 425 TP

Anyone here still hit this driver? If so, what is the main reason that you haven't "upgraded" yet? I have a guy that owns a golf shop that was telling me that for me that driver is as good as anything new out on the market. He had a 9.5*, but I was hitting it too low. But it did carry a long ways even at that low ballflight. I was thinking about buying just a head off of Ebay and putting a good shaft in it. Won't cost much to do that.

I think that new isn't better, better is better. That said there are many new releases of almost all golf equipment out there and it tough to sort through all the crap to find out what is a true advancement in the club/ball area and what is just sales hype. That's one of the great function of this forum.

I'm happily using the 425TP and scoring well with it. My decision to replace is driven by "Will I score better with this/ or is this going to make it easier?". Yet you can't put your head in the sand and let technology pass too far by you. I think that the 425TP is here to stay......................................until I demo the 909!!

i bought a regular r7 425 my sophmore year in highschool, well i have been goin though some swing changes lately and had been snap hooking the ball like no other. instead of tryin all the newfangled stuff, i figured why not try the TP version of the driver that i know and love. i picked one up on here with a 73x whiteboard for $200 and havent looked back since. the tp version was square to open and really helped with my snap hooks. It is the best driver i have ever hit!!

I have a retail, non-TP R7 425 10.5* with a Cobra VS Proto 65 Stiff (yellow shaft from a Cobra X Driver). Bought both head and shaft from fellow Wrx'ers. The head has 2, 12g and 2, 2g weights. I think the stock had 2, 10g weights instead of the 12s. Anyway, with the 12g weights, the club is D4 at a very controllable 44.5". The head is plenty forgiving. I also have 2, 4g weights in case I want the club even shorter. It's quite long too, probably because the shorter length yields more hits in the sweetspot.

There are two drivers that I can't seem to part with. One is a tour issue 425 TP 8.5* with a tour only Rombax 80x and the other is a retail 425 TP 7.5* that I bought from Sellingers Power Golf when they had the heads only for sale for $199. I put a UST Tour Shop Proforce V2 86x in it and it feels as good as the tour issue one. These heads spin less than most heads, are a good mixture of forgiveness and workability and don't look too small but also don't look like you're swinging around a toaster. They are also some of the best sounding drivers although the sound changes if you move the weights around.

425tp is a great driver. Try putting rubber o-rings behind the weights, feels even better!

Hmmm.. very interesting. Can you elaborate alittle more on the o-rings and how the feel is better?? Sorry to have jumped off the topic but yeah I game the 425 TP in a 9.5* as well and I love this driver. I have tried other drivers but I keep going back to the 425 TP.

Had one up until a couple weeks ago. A 9.5° with the 75g stiff flex rombax. Best Taylor Made driver as far as I'm concerned. Love the way it sets up. Hit a few of my longest ever drives with it. Only reason I got rid of it is because my FT-5 goes just as far but is a bit more forgiving.

agreed with you guys. this is by far one of the best clubs to have ever been released. I still have one brand new in 9.5 S with 75g rombax. Would not sell it for anything.

I have one too, I am not playing it now, got the Burner TP. I am willing to sell it. It has been listed for a couple of months.

I never thought I would switch from a 905r but this is a great driver. I have the TP 9.5 with the Fuji 75g. I put the heavy weights on the heel (mine came with the whole kit) and I am hitting nice straight to slightly drawing drives. I concur about the sound and feel - very nice and solid. It is not really farther than the 905 but it is much straighter in general - definitely lower spin. The Fuji shaft is nice - makes me wonder how an upgraded Fuji shaft would play in this head - what difference is there with the stock Rombax and some of the aftermarket Fujis? I would have to be 20 yards longer (wild thought) to switch for a $300 shaft. Maybe 30 yards - are the other shafts that much better?

Changes the feel from something a bit 'tinny' to something like a j33 or dare i say a 510tp, something with a bit more 'substance' to it. Quite a muted and solid feel. Try it, its totoally reversable.

i pulled this club out of my dads bag a year or 2 ago. went out to shag balls off one of the tees(not driving range balls) and was hitting this club farther then i had ever hit a driver consistently. got to about the 5th or 6th ball and completely cracked the head of the driver. idk how common this is so i took a poor quality picture with my camera phone. sent the driver back and because it is discontinued they sent us a brand new super quad without a head cover.

heres the pic if anyone cares, that in fact is a crack all the way down and it kind of exploded and blew the paint off the head, you can see a big spot the paint is missing. and you could actually see inside the head of it. it was kinda funny, my dad was pissed.

this is not the tp model, but i figured id share my story anyway because i loved this driver for a few minutes i had it in my hand and i guess if i ever want to see another I gotta hit up ebay. but i moved on, wish i had it for a few days at least to get a real opinion on it. my dad had been playing it for a year or more though.

I've been driving far (300+) and semi straight with my 905R/ Harrison Mugen No Limit S60 for 2 yrs plus. Recently purchased a TM R7 425 TP and put a Harrision Mugen Prototype S60 for a low trajectory and lower spin rate. Still smashing the ball but not as far as the 905R. I'm sticking with my TM R7 425 TP because I can easily shape shots, larger sweet spot, very consistant, feels great, sounds great and still smashing the ball 290. I am more than willing to give up 10 yds for consistancy. Greatest driver I've ever had.

How does the 425tp compare in forgiveness and workability with a Hi-bore Xl tour? Also how about launch? I have a 10.5* Xl and it launches lower than my L4VX 9*. Would I need to go with a 9.5* in the 425 or a 10.5*? I like the smaller head of the Xl and like all of us ho's I am always looking to experiment. Thanks Todd

I'm assuming this will also work in a superquad? What type and size o-rings do you get? How do you insert them?

Go to any hardware store and buy the #47 size O-rings for the heavier weights and the #36 size for the lighter weights. Put them on the actual threaded part of the weight and screw it back in. It does offer a "slightly more"

muted sound than without the O ring. A solid constructed head will always sound better than the TM MWT heads.

AKAbeth,

This was so weird even seeing this thread, last night i was in Golf Galaxy and they had an R7 425 ht and the TP, they were both in semi rough condition, the TP was i think 61 bucks and the non was right around 50. I used to play the TP, gosh seems like Ages ago, and for some reason I was overwhelmingly tempted to grab it and use it when I play today. I decided to pass and am now sort of rethinking that decision. I might stop back on the way. I really just love the shape of the head at set up. Makes me feel like a Good swing with a full turn and a good tempo will be long and straight.

I went through a bit of a driver search last season and settled on a 425TP that I got a decent deal on. I love it, when I hit it well its great. When I don well I don't, but thats me not the driver. They are fantastic and dont have any plans of switching. That is until I find the ultimate shaft for the R540XD TP head I have in the closet :)
