Do you prefer a head heavy putter or head light putter ?

What's your favorite putter head weight ?
I wonder what you guys prefer - a putter with a heavy head or light head ?

And do you change putter depending on how fast the greens are, where you play ?

The norm is that one tend to prefer a head heavy putter on fast greens and a head light putter on slow greens - do you also feel that way ?

I prefer a Lighter head on every green. Always an anser style, but both of my putters are around 340g or less. The lux is right there, but the anser is quite a bit lighter.

It's just what I'm used to, I'll take the lux on slower greens since its a bit heaver, but I'm not a big fan of really heavy putters.

I prefer the heavier head it helps me control distance much more than a lighter head. I can feel the heavier head all the way through the stroke. 345-355 g is ideal to me

About 305 grams is an ideal weight for a putter head.

This is the weight that has won most professional majors.

All of Ping's classic putters are this weight, as are proven winners like the Reuter Jr. Bullseye and Wilson 8802.

I like anything 340 grams or above with 35" shaft. That said, I could still game a 300 gram at that length no problem.

Anything less than that, no thanks!

I prefer 350 grams and up. My normal gamer is 350, and I have some that run up to the 380 mark. I just putt a ton better with a heavier head.

Steve, I have been experimenting lately with the Tiger Shark Jumbo Yellow, and after about 1-2 rounds, I can't really notice much of a difference anymore. Tried it with the superstroke, and had no feel whatsoever.

That's not what Mike Shannon has stated....and he's worked with quite a few tour players. Heavier (350+) evidently has become the norm as tour conditions got faster!

I think it is fair to say Scotty has a fair number of tour players. You can check out their specs from his webpage. 350+ is not the norm for Scotties putters of players on tour

Can you show me where on scottycameron.com shows tour players' putter head weight? Thanks

Know this is old, but after a lot of trials , and bagging my org ping anser 2, I find my putter wheel house weight is ~ under 340 grams. Bit of irony there as all my other clubs are sledge hammers

After recently having been to an Edel fitting, and thinking that I 100% liked and needed a heavier head, I've found that looking at head weight in isolation could be a mistake.

For a lot of golfers it will depend on your stroke type, if you're long and steady, or short and poppy and the levels of acceleration etc.

My custom order is going to have one of the lightest heads they do but has a lot of weight distributed at other locations in the club. So total weight of the putter is still up, but head weight is way down.

For me I putted best when the arms, hands, shaft and head were helped to move at constant stroke speed.

  1. If you hands overtake then the blade (for RH golfer) will close down to lose loft and open the toe a touch right of target line.
  2. Opposite scenario, the head over takes the hands then the blade will open add loft and may aim left of target.

Now - I'm not an expert at all and I've tried to explain what was happening in my stroke and what the fitter explained. So I could be completely wrong.

My takeaway was that the grip head and shaft need to move quite relative to one another, the putter head or grip lagging way behind or way in front causes issues.

I've been playing heavier headed (mostly mallets) putters for decades. Much more stable, especially on <10 footers. My Futura X5 DB is a real load, it's well over 400 grams, could be close to 500 grams, and a terrific tool for those 6 footers. But I've discovered that weight/stability has carried a price; erratic distance control, and problems with putter/stroke control if I get at all 'quick' and don't make sure I pause after taking it back. If faced with a longer putt, say 40-50 feet, or more, I frequently ended up leaving myself a whole bunch of 6-8-10 footers when I was playing the Futura X5, way too many. I hate 8 foot putts for par. With the heavier heads stroke mechanics seem to supplant feel when it comes to distance.

So I went in the other direction, small & light - 1964 light, probably ~300-310 grams. Now distance control is a strength, not a weakness, I don't leave myself very many missable 6-8 footers, even from 50-60 feet. I've changed to a 'die at the hole' putter and I'm rarely outside of a foot from 25-30 feet, and now sometimes dropping putts from that range that used to spin away. Putter/stroke control is also much improved so I'm much much more consistent from any range.

But this is all about putting on quick, cut and rolled summer greens. I suspect when shaggy/damp winter greens arrive a heavier instrument will be a better alternative. We'll see. I sure have a large enough flock of putters mallets and blades to choose from; Pings, Odysseys, Camerons, Rams, MacGregors, Wilsons, Titleists, Miuras....way too many.
