Golfing in the Rain

playing in the rain this weekend and need some tips
hey guys, I'll be playing in a three day tournament this weekend on the NH seacoast and the forecast is calling for steady rain all three days. While that won't stop us from playing, it does make it very difficult to have fun and play well. (temps will be right around 60* too)

I have a rain suit, a huge umbrella and carry two towels but I never seem to be able to stay dry.

Any tips?

I also do very similar things, kinda like zx3bully. I bring 3 gloves and change it every 6 holes, depending on the wetness of the grip.

Many times, I don't even bring clubs with low bounce, because its so easy to dig if your area has grass and soil like here.

I definitely go up a club in many situations, unless the location of my ball is on the fairway with perfect lie and condition and within the distance of my favorite clubs.

Sometimes even two if Im in deep rough. I mostly swing easy with the clubs that I have least accuracy in.

Make sure to wear warm enough not to be cold, but comfortable enuogh not to effect your swing mechnism. Rain surprisingly makes you cold even with rainsuit.

Oh, don't forget to use the practice green at the tournament course(if you can) before the tournament begins. It makes a big difference in your putting scores and comfortness on the green during the tournament.

When I play in the rain I make sure I have an extra glove or two. Also I usually go up a club and only take a softer swing. I seem to get more control like this and there is less chance for the grip slipping in my hands. It always seem to work for me, maybe give this a try. GOOD LUCK at the tournament!

I have rain gloves and if it's just a drizzle, I use the grip control lotion (b est stuff ever).

One thing that really helps me is to be sure I take a practice swing before every shot (normally I don't). But if you're just a little fat on soaked turf, it totally screws the shot.

Also, I'll use a 10.5* driver vs. the 9.5 I normally use.

I would suggest riding in a cart for the simple reason that it will make life much easier on you. If you prefer to walk perhaps talk a friend or spouse into driving the cart for you and being a caddy. It will help you keep everything dry. Heck, there is still timne to go buy one of those fancy cart covers if you want. Those are pretty neat.

I wish you luck but her is my opinion, for what it is worth.

Too late to get your money back ?

If you can I would find something to do indoors.

Playing golf in the rain sucks and the only thing worse is playing golf in the rain when it is also cold.

You can use all of the towels and umbrellas, gloves and whatever else you can think of but two things are going to happen for sure.

1. You are going to get wet.

2. You will be cold.

The post said it would be very difficult to have fun right ? Then why bother if it is not fun.

That's why I don't play in the rain. I play golf for fun and that can not be done in the rain and cold.

Again I wish you luck !!!!!!!

Dress warm and bring extra gloves - get some of the FJ rain gloves. Its going to be cold and wet and you can take one of the elements out by dressing warm. Remember, you can always take off a layer. Living here in Chicago we play sports in some rediculous weather and I swear by the Under Amrour Cold Gear - its thin and its very very warm.

So I probably wasn't the only one calling every golf course in the area to see if they were open two weekends ago when we had all of that rain.

No sir you were not!

I was looking at the radar and a map of golf courses trying to call places that may have had less rain. I live in Roselle and I was calling as far south as Kankakee. ha ha ha!

It wasn't until later that day when I drove to my parents house that I realized how much rain we actually had.

Play in the rain a ton here in Oregon.

Use a push cart with the umbrella holder and swear by the Ultimittens.

If it is going to be cold, find those chemical hand warmer packs.

I don't wear gloves in the rain, they just keep my hand wet and after a few holes, my grip is actually worse.

When the weather is bad enough, I just bunt the ball out there with my driver, like 210-230, just to make sure I am not in the nasty rough.

I also play lots of punch shots with longer clubs because the ball holds the green when it is soaking.

I've heard that gripping slightly down and hovering the club, put the ball slightly more back than normal in your stance helps since your feet will slosh down into the ground a little more. Like a bunker shot - you want to hit ball first.

I think I heard Paddy Harrington say something about making sure that you wipe the face of the driver to keep it as dry as possible. I guess with the lack of scorelines on most faces (in the middle) he mentioned that the water would produce knuckleballs that wouldn't spin enough. And of course in the rain you have the excuse to wear the sweet FJ Bucket Hat  . That's enough for me to play on saturday.

wow, thanks for all of the replies guys. couple things:

*its an annual trip that about 30 of us take each year and choosing not to play due to weather when the course is open would open me up to unbearable ribbing and hazing (yeah, its one of those trips)

*the accomodations are already paid for but golf is not......but it would take a gail force winds and many inches of rain for me not to play (as long as the course is open)

*i was actually looking for ways to stay dry as opposed to playing tips but the playing tips/suggestions have been great. choking up and hitting more club into the softer greens is a tip that I will definitely use. I will also be putting the ball way back in my stance and punching more shots. probably will chip a lot more with my hybrid and 7 iron too.

*i have some rain/cold weather gloves but once those get wet, its all over and my hands wrinkle up like raisins

*one thing I hadn't thought of before is foregoing the carts and using a push/pull cart instead. my biggest gripe is the transfer of getting out of the cart, opening the umbrella, trying to stay somewhat dry when hitting the shot, grabbing the umbrella off the ground which has now blown 50 feet away, putting my soaking wet clubs back in my bag (on which the rain cover is probably the most annoying thing in the world), wiping off the seat, folding back up the umbrella and traveling to the next shot. seems to me that using a pull cart and walking on the cart paths will be as close to having a caddy as possible.

**Keep the tips coming! thanks

All good tips, here is mine: pick up the ball on the green once you are there and chip it to the hole (with your play partner's permission  ) I just played a round of golf in a downpour about 2 weeks ago, I had no problems of hitting green, but once get on green, putting killing me with all those puddles :-)

Have fun,

Use the rain gloves like you mentioned, don't ride in the cart, and as you walk, keep your hands in your pockets. It WILL keep them warmer, even though you've got layers of pants on...if you can find some of those handwarmers people use in real cold weather, that will help. Basically, like a few people have said, if you can keep your grip (this previous bit should help, as warmer hands are easier to use), and keep your body warmish enough to stay limber, then it might as well not even be raining. Just another day, but wet  One of my best rounds ever was played in a HUGE downpour. I hit my first tee shot as iyt started to drizzle, and by the time we walked to our approach shots, every part of my body was soaked....SOAKED...but I wasn't cold...if you can stay warm, wet isn't much of a problem....Anyway, hope that helps.
