i heard that he gets custom made titleist irons which are 1 inch longer. but somehow they cut the hosel down a bit, to get the swingweight right....

dont know if that is true, but i heard rumors....

I read a while ago that his irons are +2 which made me laugh as the Titleist website at the time said they could not make custom clubs more than +1

I saw an article somewhere about his irons and believe it said 2" over standard.

 

I will look for the article but was able to find out his putter is a scotty cameron 37" in length.

I am 6'6" and I play +3/4", but they are all around 5 degrees upright. I find that I struggle with getting my equipment to feel right, at least in my irons and wedges anyways. It drives me nuts I always feel that one of my clubs is off.

I'm 6' around 6'1 with my golf shoes and my irons are all +1 " including wedges, my teacher had me get them lengthened immediately after my first few lessons my misses were always thin and really had to go down to attack the ball. I saw results immediately after and my irons are perfect now, GIR went up and so did an extra club in length which helped a lot.

I had a fitting with Titleist at their national fitting centre, we discussed an extra 1/2 inch as i'm 6ft 2, the fitter had done some work on the Euro tour truck and he made the point that Karlsson is 6ft 5 and has standard length shafts.

Robert plays his irons 2" longer than standard - I know, because I asked him on the driving range at Barsebäck in 2006.

 

Maybe he has changed specs since that - but up until 2006 he played his irons 2" longer than standard length.

 

He's 6' 6" with VERY short arms.

I am a PGA professional with lots of club fitting experience and players can range a WIDE variety of club length based on arm/torso/leg length. For example if you are tall but have ape arms then you might be able to play standard length. Other side you could be 5'7" and have alligator arms and need +1/2.

 

I am 6'6" and my irons are +1 1/2 from "standard" (which is laughable because there is no more industry standard for loft, lie, or length) I know this is a tangent however it is crazy that within Taylor Made their PW's can range from 44-48 degrees of loft.

 

Anyway......... Length should fit the player and not just their height. :lol:

why don't you tall guys just bend over more to be shafted correctly? ;) :lol: if your posture is right, you will only be fit for lie angle and wrist to floor measurement..most tall players won't play more than +1 over standard...I am 6 2 and play 1/2 long....but could easily play normal length irons..it's a posture thing..I believe

I am 6-4 and play +1 inch and 2 degrees upright Cally X-20s.

 

Titleist fitter at a demo-day in July said "titleist hates to build irons more than +1/2 inch NO MATTER HOW TALL players are because it throws the weighting off and hurts control, and there is a trend toward shorter irons in fitting."

 

just passing on info here...his statement certainly is confusing.

I remember an article on Sky Sports (U.K satalite tv channel) weekly golf programme around 10 years ago which was discussing Karlson and up until then he had used standard length clubs and this had led to consistancy problems. The fitter had then put 2" onto the shafts and Robert was amazed at the improvement.

He could have taken some length off recently but he was using 2" over standard for a number of years.

 

p.s. Well done to the U.S.A in the Ryder cup. Some inspired individuals and a great TEAM performance. It was exciting viewing (especially the Karlson game on Sat.) although I would have preffered the opposite result!

i read somewhere stuart cink plays standard length irons but they do look very short for him.

i suppose its what you get used too. i'm 6ft 2 ins and always had plus .5 longer but have tried standard length and as long as the lie angle is ok play well either way.i think the lie angle is more crucial than length for accurate shots

I am 6'5" and play my 755s with 1/2" extra on each iron.

 

 

I know years earlier when I got fitted for my MP-32s, they actually made them 1.5" longer. But when I got fitted for my new Titleist irons, they said that was a trend a few years back, and that they are trying to stay away from adding more than an inch.

 

That's all I've heard about that. Definitely screwed up my stance and ball position for awhile!

I'm 6'5" and play Bridgestone J33's at +1/2" ( 38.5" 5 iron) to their standard specs, which, as you guys know varies widely from mfr. to mfr. The reality of proper club length is a product of the players height, arm length, which is usually measured from wrist or fingers to floor, and, probably most importantly, swing plane. Once these are determined then the lie angles will be set accordingly to a steep or flat angle of approach.

My bridgy's were fitted by a PGA Master Pro and club fitter with years of TOUR experience, and his thought are that you set the irons length off of a 5 or 6 iron and maintain the lengths throughout the iron sets accordingly.

He did not feel the Woods/ Hybrids needed to maintain the same length standards as the irons since the difference of a standard say, driver at 45" isn't really going to be affected as adversly as a wedge that's too short. Also indicated that if the player can handle/ control a longer Driver, that's OK, but if not, standard length will not change the clubs performance. This way you dont re-shaft or extend a club enough to justify modifying it, just to "fit" with the irons.

It isn't just height, it's also how long your arms are. I have a friend who used to be a world class swimmer who has a longer arm span than normal (which many world class swimmers have e.g. Michael Phelps) and actually uses standard or -1/2 long clubs. He is 6'4". He does have them bent 1 degree upright as well. I think I remember that the general guidelines are your "wingspan" should be approximately your height. My friend has a 3.5 inch longer wingspan than what is considered normal/average for his height. I think I read that Michael Phelps has 5+ inches longer wingspan than normal..

I am 6'-2" but my arm span measures in at 6'-4.5". All this boils down to me playing standard length and standard lie iron lengths. My 4 wood is standard length but my driver is shortened to 44.5".

 

I call it "monkey arm syndrome".
