THE Niblick...

Not so fast my friends
I picked up a 42* niblick by Cleveland yesterday. It was mostly as something to play with over the winter in my basement as I can hit chips and putts to my heart's content. It's the real deal IMO. Very upright lie and very heavy head (would like to know the swingweight on this thing). It's a dream to make clean contact and some deadly accurate chipping. Extremely stable on full swings. I tried to make the thing hook or slice and could barely get it to move and the trajectory is low and piercing. Don't know about distance but was hitting it 125 into a fairly strong wind so guessing 135ish which is right where I hit the PW. I can definitely see myself going to two wedges and using the niblick.

I'm going to be the laughing stock of my entire club next year... Long putter, 64* wedge switching in/out with a niblick. I love it.:)

I bought the 37 to have some fun with, tried it, then bought the 42. Pretty cool clubs. I put one on my Ping Swingweight gauge and they swingweigted at E2. After swinging a few full swings all my other clubs felt very light. It works as a heavy club too for warmups. I have not played a full round with them yet, just some practice on golf hole where i can sneek on.

do you use a putter swing, regular swing or either depending on the type of shot you want to hit?

It depends on the shot you want to hit. Around the green, I setup like a putter (they are 35" long). For full shots, I setup like I'm hitting my 9 iron. I don't feel any awkwardness with a full, 3/4, or 1/2 swing.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one who thinks this club is more useful then your average "chipper". I had started a thread about this club last week, but didn't get too many responses...

I swing it just like a regular chip shot around the greens. I get a nice and consistent contact/trajectory/spin and it's really simple to hit. I even open it up and can manipulate the loft with great results. On full swings, it's just like a lob wedge as far as length but a bit more upright and the trajectory is obviously much lower. Maybe a bit better for the more upright swing plane but I'm just guessing on that part.

I posted on the other thread, but I took it to the range for the second time and still am getting great results (42*). I practiced altering trajectory around the green a lot more and that helped its performance from bad lies. I just can't wait to hit those low spinners without having to set up for it. I also NEVER putt from the fringe so this is a great in-between to help me get it close with a putter stance and zero chance of that bad hop coming off of it. I can't wait to write a review after getting it onto the course and using it in real conditions without picking my lie or having 5 goes at the same shot to get it right.

I just came from my pro shop and demo'd the niblick. Unfortunately my experience wasn't as good as yours. To me, the niblick felt a little harsh and it really didn't bring anything I couldn't do with my wedges and 8 iron.

I might try the odyssey marxman x-act to compare. I do see the benefits of a utility club like this and was looking forward to it.. bummer.

I gave the niblick a second chance and took it out to the range to see real ballflight and it actually felt pretty good. 3/4 swing goes about 100 yds so this will replace my 50* gap wedge. Will continue testing it for the next few weeks but I think it will stay in the bag.

I hit this thing because of all the buzz on here, and I threw up in my mouth a little bit after a few swings. It didn't do anything that one of my clubs in my bag can't already do.

a Niblick????

honestly, have some dignity!!

There is honestly no need for a chipper...ever

LOL.. that's ok.. I find my dignity in the lower scores rather than the equipment I carry.

Yeah me too...

thats why I work hard and practice everyday instead of acting like an old man and getting a chipper.

I'm not sure how carrying a niblick is related to practice but good for you that have the time to practice the game everyday. Some of us also have other responsibilities.

Besides, a few years ago people had the same attitude as you regarding the hybrid you carry according to your signature :)

It's all good. I play my own game and get the equipment that will help me lower scores.. I really don't care what others play.

Outside of the fact that this is a blatent attempt by "drew" to troll in this thread: Why the hell do you care what other people carry in their bag? It's not your bag. Unless you are going to contribute something of substance to the thread, something you forgot to do in your first two posts, shut your mouth and go on your way.

Now to contribute to the thread in a constructive manner: Tried it out at the pro shop for sh*ts and giggles. Not really for me. I would have to lose my 53* in order to add this to the bag, and it really doesn't do all that much that I cannot already do with my 56*. But hey, if it works for you and helps you get lower scores, by any means.

I also have responsibilities (High-school student and I have two jobs) but I find a way to still get out there.

But about the hybrid situation... I really dont think a hybrid and a chipper are on the same level. Almost every golfer has a hybrid and I would say about 3% of all golfers have a chipper.

But hey, play what you want to. Just don't get defensive when the guys at the club get on you a bit for using a chipper. haha.

You're a high school kid. You probably have no idea that people used to call hybrids "hack-sticks" and used to make fun of anybody who used them. Geez, man, go practice your long irons. You don't need that 9 wood thing. You just call it a hybrid because you're afraid to admit it's a 9 wood. Heck, my grandma doesn't even use one. Be a man and put your irons back in your bag.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

you got me...

but if you look i have 3iron through pitching wedge blades, i just have a 7 wood because its the easiest and most reliable club in my bag. My hybrid is sitting in my garage right now

I managed to get a Niblick for a very good price ( I imagine there will be a few on e-bay soon! ) and thought I would try one for myself, if I didn't like it I would just sell it on.

Have played two rounds with it and had five range sessions, I ended up taking the Gap Wedge out of the bag for this exeriment as it gets used the least of all my clubs.

Have to say I am quite enjoying it, used it from all sorts of places, half shots 80-90 yards to little chips and bump and runs. Looks like it is staying in the bag at leaset for a while ;)
