Question of Paypal chargeback

Recommended Posts

PayPal preaches sellers protection, but at the end of the day you'll end up getting shafted if the buyer request a charge back through his/her credit card company. I got shafted for the exact same reason you are right now 3 years ago for about $800 (I sold laptop on Ebay). Afterward when I was talking to PayPal on the phone I asked them this:

Me: So if I signup for paypal, buy a $1000 laptop and request a chargeback through my CC company, I'll get the laptop for free?

PayPal: I don't recommend you doing that.

Me: But I can, right?

PayPal: I won't comment on that.

Me: So how did you really protect me as a seller? I even faxed you guys a copy of his hand written signature that he received the laptop from FedEx.

PayPal: Well the CC company took the money back so we have to take it back from you.

I'll never use PayPal again.

what are you doing leaving that kind of money in your paypal account ? get paid and get the money out. they can NOT take it from your credit card. only from your acct

yeah, as soon as someone deposits money into my paypal account, i take it out immediately and leave just enough in there to cover the shipping costs of the item that was purchased. i cant believe after all the time that had passed from the sale until now that they would do this to the OP. they shouldve told the person who filed the claim to go pound sand cuz too much time had gone by. total BS. keep calling the jerk (call the buyer from different #'s and even *67 your # to block it sometimes until you reach him)

Forget calling him from different numbers. I'd just call him over and over again with IP Relay. Use AIM Express and go to town on this idiot.

i dont even know what that is... man, technology is starting to blow by me now that i just turned 40

Same thing happened to me earlier this year. Three months later some dude says he didnt authorize the charge for an item he bought from me after he won it on ebay. Paypal immediately puts a negative balance on my account, and freezes it untill I pay it off. I dont even get to argue, I have to pay it off before I can do anything, and I use paypal a lot. So I pay it off and call and get the story from them. Once the guy complains to his credit card company, and they request the money from paypal, paypal has to pay them. Paypal said my only recourse against the guy was if I had a tracking number showing the item was delivered to a verified paypal address. If I had that, they would be able to refund me my money. Well I dont keep those (I do now) for three freakin months, so I was SOL. I was furious. Then I found out the buyer called paypal and said it was his mistake, he really had authorized the purcahse, and he wanted take his complaint out. Well since paypal is so quick to rush to judgement and save the buyer, they had already handed the money over to the CC company, and had no way of getting it back, EVEN THOUGH THE BUYER ADMITTED HE WAS IN THE WRONG AND DID AUTHORIZE THE TRANSACTION. I was freakin pissed as all hell. Well I used ebay, and got the buyers phone number/email address and contacted him, I was lucky that he was fair enough to just paypal me the money again, so I was squared away. However I placed another call with paypal to discuss my displeasure with the whole process, I asked the guy, so if I order anything off ebay and pay with paypal, the item comes without a delivery confirmation, I can call me credit card company, say I didnt authorize the transaction, and get my money back no problems??? He was like, well I wouldnt recommend doing that, but the seller would have no recourse against you. Its a definite flawed system, I ALWAYS use delivery confirmation on anything over $20 bucks now, and will only deliver to verified paypal addresses, that way my a** is always covered. Hope someone can learn something from my experience.

good lord that is freaking scary. i dont understand how your buyer suddenly realized he DID authorize that purchase. what a tool. and yeah, it totally sucks how PayPal is so quick to judge, especially if you are an established seller with a great/perfect rating. luckily, nothing like that has happened to me yet. but i DO keep every delivery confirmation # on file, as well as all inquiries about the items i sell. hopefully i will never have to go thru this. thanks for telling us about that. its good to know

Another route that I have learned is I signed up for all my shipments to go via FedEx (mostly ground).

Once you sign up for an account, I signed up for ShipRush which is specifically designed for Ebay and other auction sites. I just click and ship from the link (similar to what Ebay and Paypal wants you to do with USPS)

When I ship something the buyer is automatically emailed the tracking number and information and the tracking number is added directly to the auction number and stays there for the 90 days. Anyone seller, buyer, Paypal and Ebay has the confirmation.

ALSO AND MOST IMPORTANT FOR EVERY SELLER YOU MUST HAVE A SIGNATURE CONFIRMATION FOR ANY ITEM OVER $250.00 VALUE, or you are screwed every time.

  • 3 weeks later...

Well, here is the update: do not use Paypal for anything because you will get screwed in the end. This piece of crap won the $47 chargeback plus the credit card company charged a $10 processing fee to Paypal which of course got passed down to me. So, I am out a total of $57 PLUS my freaking wedge that is God knows where. I no longer know what to say. After all the documentation that I provided them and I STILL lost the dispute! Total bullcrap.

Merry Friggin Christmas.

Just be glad it was only $57. I have seen so much worse, Mizunogrrl is apparently out $1080 plus the equipment...

That would be cause enough to blow something up... LOL...

I had this done to me a few times but a tip that was given to me by my friend is this:

1) Always check your paypal balance and withdraw money the moment you get it. Leave just enough to cover shipping.

2) If you find a dispute against your paypal account, IMMEDIATELY remove your bank account, credit cards and CHANGE your email address.

This way, when Paypal screws you over, you can just open a new account a week later with all your previous information.

Paypal if always full of cr*p and can't really protect the seller from anything. People/Buyers have discover that they can just dispute through their credit card companies and they will always win. Paypal negative balance accounts aren't upheld by any banks and they can't pull the money from any bank/credit card accounts that you removed from your account.

Sorry about your loss, Paypal su*ks.

That is some serious BS. I cannot believe they let that happen. I would get in touch with the credit card company and not let this die. I mean, $57 is $57 + the principle. I think I would contact a lawyer and see what the guy would charge to make a phone call to Paypal on your behalf. Sounds like you have enogh documentation for a case and would win with the threat of legal action. There might even be a few lawyers here on this site that could offer some advice or help out.

I know what it feels like to get screwed. US Airways lost my whole set of clubs this year and didn't give me a dime. No fun.

Have you emailed the guy? I know you said you still had his email address. It might be childish, but if you still have it, and he wont respond to you, you could sign him up for all kinds of free sites and news letters to send stuff to his email. Just flood him with Spam. Might make you feel better, and it won't make you that bad of a person...

If they haven't frozen your account yet, get your money out NOW.

Can Paypal reach directly into a bank account that is attached to the Paypal account to pull funds if the Paypal account itself is empty?

YES! You need to change your account now or your money is still at risk.

no

Yes they can, and it is a problem. Unless you have ONLY a credit card on file, your bank account is at risk as well, and to top it off, if you don't have enough to cover the ACH withdraw most banks will stick you with a bad check charge, and if you have overdraft protection - like I do, you now have a loan on top of loosing your merchandise.

PayPal is not a bank, they are a clearing house and not subject to banking restrictions. They can put virtually anything they want in the TOS. Reclaiming money from your bank is one option you agreed to when you signed up.

Emptying your bank account to avoid the charges will just result in a ding on your credit report in a few months. If anyone thinks paypal is hard to deal with, try dealing with the credit bureaus. I had an issue once that I was 100% in the right, had papers to prove it, and still ended up paying a few hundred to fix the credit mark as fighting it would cost a lot more.
