Had A Fitting -- How does the backward tilt affect launch angle and

Had a Trackman fitting the other day -- I've been working on certain aspects of the swing, but other weaknesses creeped in while I paid attention to others.

I've been trying to step on my front foot at the start of the downswing. After the fitting, I noticed in a mirror that I was bumping (swaying) the hip too much, causing more tilt of the spine towards the back with the right shoulder coming down.

Yes, I know, you always resolve these things after a fitting. How fitting. lol.

This flaw occurred during the fitting causing me to hit the ball high on the face and dropkicking the driver when it was extreme. This caused the LA to rise to 18 in a 9 loft driver. I also lost ballspeed because I was hitting the clubface too high, according to the fitter. ( Of course, no one pointed out the easily curable flaw during the fitting - it's not their job, but too bad)

So he had me tee the ball much lower in the 9 deg driver - bringing ballspeed up and launch angle to 15, spin with range balls was 2650, SS about mid-90's - total distance about 240 against a wind. I ordered a 10-10.25 digitally measured loft, thinking that I'd cure the problem quickly and a little more loft would be needed.

Question: Was that smart, or once again, dumb? Once I step on the front foot and turn the hips aggressively, will going up in loft to 10 and teeing the ball at a normal height give me a decent launch angle? - more along the lines of 13-14? and increase spin a tad.

You can also order "shaft stabilization" (spine and flo) - both at additional cost. Although spine/flo doesn't matter as much - I normally tinker with every driver I've owned by sending it to a professional after I see what happens on the course.

You call it a backward tilt but it is commonly called a reverse weight shift. A fairly common swing flaw especially with self taught golfers, who try to help the ball in the air. It adds effective loft (more) to the head thus making for high, short shots and this assumes all else is ok.

 

It is always a question in club fitting as to how far one goes to correct a swing flaw.

 

I say that if the golfer is older, has had the issue all their life, is a reasonable golfer (18 or less cap), the flaw happens every swing, then compenate for it with lower, not higher loft.

 

I also say if a younger golfer and/or wants to learn the correct swing and/or does not repeat the flaw every swing, then lessons are the best correction, not equipment compensations.

Thanks, John, but I had no intent to help the ball into the air. It's too much of a hip bump that went haywire. After I saw it in the mirror, I corrected it immediately. If I step on the front foot, and keep my spine angle more vertical, it corrects several flaws. And believe me, it's not a self taught swing. lol. But thanks -- I'm assuming that hitting on the top part of the face puts me into the roll of the face and adds loft.
