I don't own a GPS - I'm looking to buy one and the SG2.5 is the front runner... the simple fact that 18 (15 - 4star) out of the 21 courses I played this year are mapped (which is far more than any of the competitors - in Quebec) makes it very interesting - particularly my own course...

I havn't heard any bad comment on the unit 'on course'... other than taking a long time to lock on satellites at first (but that seems to be related to older SkyGolf models and for users that don't let the 'lock-in screen' on until 4 satellites are shown)... the obvious cons are: membership fees (but I spend more at the clubhouse after a round than the annual membership) and no added points (if your course has changed since the 'mapper' came)... other than this, only great reviews, particularly on accuracy and Inteligreen...

Had a 2.0 when they first came out & it was good. Sold it & bought a 5.0 - overkill IMO. Sold it & bought a 2.5 last year. Absolutely love it!

Gives the information you need at a great price. Most (I can't say all) courses are professionally mapped & I'm willing to pay an annual fee for that. Yes.....I'm too lazy to map my own courses. I bought my SkyCaddie for its' "ease of use", not so I could do more work walking the courses I play!

You can't go wrong with the 2.5. Stay away from the 3.0 and 4.0, no matter what price you can get them for.

I have the Sg5, which is basically the same thing as the 2.5 (just a bigger screen and color). I got it 2 weeks ago and it is great. The 2.5 would have easily met my needs, but tgw had a good deal on the SG5. You will not regret your purchase and it helps having it on any course.

Last week, the 2.5 was $209 on tgw but it is back up to 259 now. I would wait for it to go on sale again and buy it then. It will probably be less either right before or right after Christmas.

The information given just makes playing a round easier. It gives you a lot of information, which makes decision making and confidence in club selection very satisfying.

We havent had to use my friends rangefinder once since I got my Skycaddie.

... anyone having problem with signal (even with 4star courses) with the 2.5?... Or does this only apply to 'older' models?...

... also, not having used one personally, when I read that there is 'enough' information (bunkers, creeks, layup yardages, etc.) would you say that all you need is there in the first place? (since I think the only points you can add are F/C/B figures if needed)

I'm asking - because these represents my only concerns before buying one... TIA

Having only used their SG2 for about 5 years and not having used their newer ones personally (although a friend with an SG4 has had problems) I really can't comment about signal issues on these newer devices. Based on what I know about the GPS receiver they use that should not be a problem.

As far as maps, using the SG2 for 5 years, they probably contain everything one "needs" 95% or even 99% of the time . Only you can define what you "need", however. I see a couple of advantages in being able to edit courses to add your own targets (or delete those that don't come into play in your game to remove "clutter"):

- 1) if you do it yourself you know exactly what point "on the ground" the unit is referring to with the yardages. The course I play has a lot of odd shaped or diagonal hazards where knowing what point has been mapped as the "to" or "clear/carry" point is important. I didn;t need to remap the entire course, just add or "change" a few targets here and there.

- 2) on one hole at my course, for another example, if my drive is in the fairway, particular spots on this par 5 don't even come into play and were not mapped. However, if I put my drive in the right fairway bunker or behind the trees on the left, there are a few target distances I would really like to know for my next shot as there is a hazard that now comes into play and a totally different lay up area that would be suitable.

- 3) example three - our course was lengthened as it has been used for USGA and PGA Tour qualifying. A new back tee was added to the second hole adding 90 yards to the hole and now bringing a creek which had not been mapped well within range.

- 4) this doesn't happen very often, but our course went through a greens renovation project that, due to expense, was spread over three years. A few of the greens were changed dramatically in size and shape. The course wasn't re-mapped until a year after the project was completed, so the distances to FCB on those greens were inaccurate for quite a while.

Also, I believe the capability to "add" FCB are if you map a course yourself, meaning you would have no other targets. I don't think they can be added to a downloaded course.

You certainly can't go wrong with either the SG2.5 or SG5. They are great units.

Thank you phil - again, a great objective reply on your part - I'm looking forward to your posts...

This only brings a question (a newbie one obviously) - wouldn't you be able to know what point on the ground was mapped with the SG2.5 my standing on (or very close to) it?... I'm guessing the unit automatically 'erase' this point and wouldn't show: 5yds to bunker, 2yds to bunker, etc. ... right?

Evidently, this would be for my own course - where I gt to play often... that's no help for a course you don't know and it shows 174yds to bunker (can't run there and come back to know the mapped point  )
