John Daly Makes Headlines - MERGED

I'm not trying to justify what Daly did but what about the so called fan? Sounds like maybe he was being a bit of a ***** himself. He admitted that he had seen the "no cameras" signs but still had one on the premises when he shouldn't have, and he also said that he might have been being a little aggressive but he didn't feel like he was being extreme. Well obviously Daly thought he was. Not saying Daly was right to react how he did but maybe the fan is equally as big a jackass as Daly.

There's a lil nugget to chew on :D

So, Tiger Woods caddy going over and threating a guy is okay, or Tiger cursing at some one who took a photo in his back swing in front of a bunch of kids is okay...If Tiger would have broke the camera every one would be singing a different tune IMO.

Steve Williams was wrong for his reaction and so was Daly. Plain and simple.

I wouldnt be judging Daily before we get ALL the details to the story.

I frankly don't give two hoots what the details are. You do not take a camera out of a spectators hand PERIOD. That is what a marshall is for. Daly having a typical Daly round does not give him the right to act like an animal and take that out of his hand and destroy it.

why would the details not matter?!?!? the guy with the camera could have been crazy for all you know. first off, it happened in the woods and i doubt there was a marshal there. This guy is BREAKING the rules of no cameras allowed, which probably doesnt matter to you, because anyone can obviously tell that you are extremely biased. second until you make the pga tour and go through what those guys go through, day in and day out, then mabe you can talk. until then i would lay off Daly, and keep your "he shouldnt have done this or that" comments to yourself because the guy has a lot of pressure on him.

Gee thanks member number 67,927 for telling me when I I can make comments and when I cannot. Your opinion is duly noted.

Since I have to wait until I am on the pga tour to comment on what the pros go through then shouldn't the same apply to you. Could you tell us what tour you play on and your ranking on it. I mean you can speak for these guys and by using your logic you have to be a tour player to do that. I think you should keep your lay off Daly comments to yourself unless you can man up and prove you have the credintals to do so per your own stated requirements.

Lots of people are under lots of pressure. Lame excuse. He's a professional, supposedly.

yeah, but how many guys out there have messed up their lives as bad as he has? He is trying to get back to competitive golf, and these fans with cameras arent helping the situation at all. As far as i see it, they guy broke the camera rule, therefore his camera is free game, especially when a player has a problem with it.

Daly made his bed, he has to lie in it. It isn't the guys fault Daly fubar'd his life, he isn't responsible to fix it. As for whether a person has the right to take the law into their own hands, I'll leave that discussion for another time.

your making it sound like Daly killed a man or something. he offered to replace the camera, what more do you want? answer this then, if the guy would have followed the rules, would Daly have had to "take the law into his hands"?

I thought this was covered already... are you saying two wrongs make a right? There are other, more appropriate ways this could have been handled. I'm not absolving the camera man - he should have been escorted off the property. That is a separate issue than what Daly did. Daly offered to buy a new camera because he realized he acted rashly and inappropriately.

It was Daly's decision to act rashly and likely illegally. Nobody else was responsible for that decision and act. Just Big John.

John Daly gets everything he deserves, good or bad. All the good things he has done? Sorry- I can do lots of great things on my job, one "Ah S#$%, and there goes all your 'atta boy's." Followed closely by "Don't let the door hit you in the a#$ on the way out!"

NO WHERE in the job description of professional golfer is "flying off the handle" and "taking matters into your own hands."

John's what, like 7'9" tall and about 650 pounds? He's afraid of a little camera? Paleese.

He has no control of his attitude and/or temper and that is the sign of an addict and a person who needs mental help. He further let's anything bad that happens to him get to him, and his performance suffers because of it.

He is a martyr- everything bad that happens to John he has an excuse- a reason why "that's just the way my life is going right now" (a JD quote from earlier in the season). He's never to blame, everyone is out to get him. I think not.

I was having a really bad day once that included getting the car towed in the pouring rain off a bridge... "Why me?" I asked. "Why not you" was the response I got from a very wise man... the tow truck driver.

Changed my life.

Daly keeps getting that lesson, he just hasn't realized it yet. Until he does, stuff like this will keep finding him.

It was just announced on TV that Big John grab a spectators camera on the 17th hole today, and proceeded to smash it on a tree.

Way to go John.... This was a person that, according to the commentators, took the day off work to come watch you specifically. Awesome way to treat your loving fans.

The way it's going, you won't have any left soon!

Read the facts first moron. If you did, ask your parents why they taught you nothing about respecting other people before posting again.

Daly was truly the victim this time, for once. This Clegg guy was not a media member, just some random spectator. He should be sitting in a cell waiting for his bail hearing right now. If this were Tiger, he'd be waiting with a wired jaw courtesy of S. Williams to boot.

Big John, I applaud you. You handled this situation as well as any man could. Me, I'd have sent the guy to a dental surgeon, who would be implementing a regimen of laxatives in an effort to find some repairable molars.

Daly is not a victim. He had a number of avenues he could have explored before resorting to cro-magnon style "self-defense." Daly's a frustrated drunk who's lost control of his life, and apparently his good sense.

The photographer broke no law that I can think of. He broke some tournament rules - much different (unless the APGA is now a legislative body). He should have been escorted off the premises and been given a restraining order against returning. Daly's actions are criminal and Daly should be awaiting a bail hearing, if you want to be technical about it.

Men do not resort to violent acts as their first line of action unless no other alternatives exist. Here's an idea - Big John could have simply asked the man to stop. That might have been a great place to start.

The original poster read the article just fine. Some people are prone to anger and it clouds their judgment just like Big John. Kindred souls I guess...

That's uncalled for- there's nothing in the original post that requires a "moron" response. We all have a right to our opinions. The flaming on this board is getting rediculous.

Yeah, big tough guy.

Woooooah Ezra. Calm down mate you're going to blow a fuse.

Not sure where calling people a "moron" fits into our PG13 atmosphere on here either.

Disagree with him by all means but all that stuff about knocking people's teeth out, wired jaws and night sin a jail cell are off the scale.

Not very classy at all.

That Aint Billy Bob!!

I apologize for calling Androo a "moron". I got a little pissed off at the comments made though.

A lot of you guys are failing to realize that JD is a professional, high profile athlete as well as celebrity. Like him or not, whatever. This guy was not a member of the media or any other professional out there. Just some avg. nutjob getting way, way, way too close a professional athlete. IMO, this is about equal to running out onto the field during a MLB game and up to a player... expect to get your Word not allowed knocked out and leave in handcuffs.

Um, perhaps you ought to consult your own parents (if your notion on manliness is composed of beating the s*** out of people for so trivial an event as a guy taking a picture, something's a bit off there). Believe it or not, it is completely possible for adults to be fully informed of the facts and still reach a conclusion different than yours. And this does not make them a "moron".

The guy should be in a jail cell? Good grief. He took a picture. I'm not certain about Australian law, but I'd be willing to bet that while it may have been rude, it certainly is not a civil offense. I might point out, however, that assault and battery is - so it is lucky Daly didn't opted for your tarzan "dental surgeon" approach to dealing with small issues.

I have read all the facts, and because I've done so - and because I'm not so insecure as to need to prove my manhood by thinking an adequate response to a photograph is physical violence or destruction of property - I've concluded that Daly himself knew he overreacted (or he wouldn't have offered to buy the guy a new camera), and the guy himself knew he had been rude and irritating (as he didn't accept Daly's offer). In other words, both men clearly knew they had been in the wrong. Settled it amongst themselves, and moved on.

Unfortunately, due to Daly's continuing antics, this was probably covered in the press to a larger degree than it might have been if another golfer had done the same thing. He's brought this on himself.

Midas, well written, as always.

If anything proves manliness here, it is that both men realized they were wrong and were man enough to admit it by not trying to pursue the issue further.

It was announced in the press that John Daly did receive disciplinary action from the PGA, but that within PGA rules/regs, that action was not made public and remains between the PGA and JD.

They did not say anything about action against the fan involved.

From the Associated Press...

"John Daly was 1 under through nine holes Friday when play was stopped. He was 5 over for the tournament after an opening 78 when he smashed a spectator’s camera into a tree. The American likely will miss the cut for the third consecutive week on his three-tournament tour to Australia.

“We have this morning had the opportunity to speak with John Daly concerning yesterday’s incident on the 9th hole,” tour commissioner Ben Sellenger said. “The matter has now been resolved in accordance with the regulations of the PGA Tour.

“The outcome reached is a private matter between John and the PGA Tour consistent with the policy of the tour.”

Ezra- I just think you are on a very rocky road advocating violence towards people. Be they the paying fan or anyone else.

I'd be even more careful telling JD to be trying to have a tear up with someone. In his condition he wouldnt be able to fight a lick anyway and could well end up with a heart attack.

Let's be grateful that in the end all parties seemed to see sense without resorting to hurting people. The game is above and beyond that.

First of all, it is nothing like a MLB game.

That said, Daly is a professional. That means the Big John is the one with a code of conduct. It comes with being a professional.

The fan is not a professional and has no such code to uphold.

A little overboard, agreed but trying to make a point here. A lot of guys love to jump on the "anti JD" bandwagon. The facts, from what I've read, were that this camera was less than a foot from his face, no denial by this Clegg guy either. So, what if? What if he'd done this to Tiger? What if he'd done this to Brian Urlacher? Daly is a professional, high profile athlete. Security should be in place so there is no way a spectator should be anywhere near that close to him during play. It's dangerous for the athlete. I realize that it was "just a camera" but what if it wasn't?

As for violence... I don't let someone I don't know get a foot from my face, that's for darn sure. That's purely self defense in that case, we'll sort out intent afterwords.

What if Daly just asked the guy to step back and stop taking pictures? What if Daly had simply taken two steps back so the guy wasn't a foot from his face and called for a marshal or police officer.

It was a camera. All the "what ifs" in the world aren't going to change that. On top of that, it was obvious it was a camera and the nature of golf is that people are going to be close to the players in certain situations.

Get back to me when Daly takes away a fan's gun and smashes it on a tree.

I thought I read the guy was a professional photographer obviously allowed to take pics

Either way big John acted like a jerk and should have ask a marshall to help. Instead of once again embarrassing the game and his country.

Nope. Just some nutjob who snuck up on Daly and stuck a camera a foot away from face and snapped a pic with the flash on.

This incident is not embarassing to me... should be embarassing if you're Australian though.

What does that actually mean?

Obviously couldn't provide a safe, secure environment for a professional athlete during a tournament.

So you're calling out an entire country? Wow...

Is this some sort of a recurring theme in Australia? Please enlighten me because I have never really heard of the dangers associated with professional athletes and their respective environments before. Not that I am a professional athlete- was hoping to visit relatively soon though...

Mate- you have lost the plot! its a pretty safe environment for guys that keep the ball between the ropes. For a tough guy advocating daly taking matters into his own hands approach, you must be pretty soft if you think a spectator taking a picture relates to a unsecure environment. I think you should write to the Australian Golf Union and request that they hire Jack Bauer to handle crowd control at the next golf event.
