Burner '07 vs Burner '08 TL vs others
:russian_roulette: :russian_roulette: :russian_roulette: :russian_roulette: :russian_roulette: :russian_roulette: :russian_roulette:

Getting sick of trying to find a hybrid, and after swearing them off for the 4th time I am ready to try them again. I have never hit the Burner '07 or the Burner '08 TL. Looking at the 19° and the 18° in the two clubs. I have hit almost everything out there, and don't get along with anything. These 2 are pretty much my last shot, minus the Pro Gold. So how do the two compare? Is the '07 prone to hooking? I've done some searching on here, and found some answers but wanted some more reviews since the '08 has been out longer now.

I have an LDI, and I had a Bridgestone AirMuscle, and they were ok. The LDI feels pretty crummy. I hit my 5 wood really well, but I would rather have a hybrid if possible for the versatility. I may just go back to the 2 iron. I'll look into the Fourteen as I have always been intrigued by that club.

EDIT: OT, but glad you got your signature to fit.

What happened to the Scratch hybrid?

Anyways, as for your question, I found the 07 Burner to be fairly square at address, and not overly prone to hooking. However, if I went after one and got a bit quick on the downswing, it resulted in a hook about 40% of the time, which is why I gave it up. I really wanted to like the TL 08 burner, and I did for a while with an Altus hybrid in it. But I missed the shot-making that I get with my 2 iron, albeit the TL is very good for this, considering it's a hybrid. It had a nice boring trajectory and I could work it both ways very easily. I will probably switch back to it pretty soon as I could use the bit of extra carry as the fairways here are pretty saturated. Hope this helps, good luck getting along with one of these. :good:

I prefer lofted full size fairway metals over both long irons and hybrids from the fairway. Could be a generation thing.

The Epon AF-901 is absolutely money from the tee, though. I use a broken tee and push it all the way in with just the cup above ground. I only hit it about 200 yards, but have yet to miss a skinny fairway with it and wind doesn't faze it.

200 yards onto the fairway is better than 250 into some neighbor's vegetable garden. Ever hit a middle iron off a zucchini because nobody thought of putting white OB posts that far off the beaten path?

I should also mention that I once played a round with my chiropractor's clubs. He had nothing but Cleveland Halos in between his driver and 7-iron. I believe that they were in 3° increments from 16 to 31º. Not bad clubs at all. I could play with them if I had to.

18Stroke, I don't think I am getting the Scratch anymore. Not sure though.

I was afraid the '07 would be hooky. It looks pretty good at address, I actually prefer the appearance of it over the '08 TL.

Thanks for the info Mcbush.

If you are prone to hooking your hybrids, try an open face model like any TM TP hybrid or a Titleist 909.

I had the TP, and the 585.H. I was looking at a TP again, but this time with a steel shaft.

Maybe the Rescue Mid TP? Haven't had one of those in a while, and liked it before.

Ever try the original Taylor Made FireSole Rescue hybrid? It was painted copper-color, had a titanium rather than steel body, and something called a "Bubble" shaft.

I loved the look. Thought that I'd stripe it. Couldn't hit it worth a damn.

When I tried those Cleveland Halos that I mentioned a post or two above, I was pleasantly surprised at how much the genre had improved.

I have 2 of those LOL. I have tried everything pretty much.

I found a good deal on a 17° 2007 Rescue TP with an X-100 that I may go for. I think steel may help with my inconsistency issues.

Depending on the course and how you feel, rotate between your 2 iron and your GS Tour 5 wood. Also, try an 18 degree Adams Idea Pro (the older model). If you like a 2 iron, you'll like that hybrid.

I'm sure you know this, but the 2 iron will give you the most accuracy and the lowest flight. The 5 wood will be the least accurate, but it easily gets up in the air. I think it's pretty easy to decide between those two on any given day. For example, a nice windy day on a tight course versus a wet day on a course with lots of long forced carries to forgiving landing areas.

The hybrid is right in between the 2 iron and 5 wood. Not quite as accurate as the 2 iron and not quite as high flying as the 5 wood. So, I guess the hybrid was appropriately named. The key is to buy one that doesn't have hook tendencies. That's why I like the Adams Idea Pro.

I wouldn't think that a two iron is more accurate than a five wood, unless you take wind effect into consideration.

The two iron has a shorter shaft, true, but a two iron takes on sidespin so well that most of us pretty much have to play draw or fade because otherwise, the club will choose the curviture for us if we try a straight ball. Trajectory control is just easier with a two iron.

Overall, though, the five-wood is a pretty straight hitting club unless the high trajectory shot gets blown around, and with the steeper descent, it stays where it lands.

That being said, I like my Epon long iron from the tee of a scary driving hole. It's more forgiving that a conventional 1 or 2 iron.

haha funny thing is i started a post with the exact same title "I hate hybrids"

BUT

I found one i finally like

you gotta get a nickent

I picked one up off ebay for 30 bucks and had it reshafted. Thing bombs and is easy to hit off tight lies, even in the 14 degree version I have.

It's become my go to club.

Trust me on this one, you'll like it

Twoironblade - I had the Idea Pro, and it was okay, but still not great. I don't really have accuracy issues with the 5 wood off the tee. I can just hit a stinger with it if need be.

Nifty - thanks for all your suggestions and advice. I am going to try a Fourteen if the hybrid I just purchased doesn't work.

tpatridge - I have a Nickent sitting upstairs right now. :russian_roulette:

I think the real problem is graphite. I don't like the light shaft in that short of a club. I ordered the 2007 Rescue TP 17° with an X-100 just now, so we will see if that is the problem. I really think that will be the fix. Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll post an update when I hit it.

I have this head, but with the 85g Reax shaft. I find it really workable right and left and no more hooky than any of my other clubs.

Have you considered trying some 5-woods? I've had the same thing going on for 2 years or more, until, recently. Trying to find an 18degree hybrid to slot in where 5-wood would be, but the fact is, I just don't seem to be able to hit hybrids.

Don't get me wrong, there's been a couple I've liked, and they've pretty much all been good looking clubs, but I just don't seem to have the knack of hitting them.

Before any wise cracks appear, it's not a lack of ability!! I have had rounds where I've been playing brilliantly, then the hybrid of choice at the time comes out and I seem on occasion to produce shots akin to those of a one-armed blind man.

Try a 5-wood. I mean, let's be honest; we're all golf club ho's here, to some extent or another. So I'm sure you'll have no qualms about buying something to try, and then dumping it like a bad date if it isn't right.

If you must stick with hybrids though, the best two I played were the 585H and the CLK Fli-Hi, probably 17degrees would be good, especially in the Mizzy, as the next strongest loft is 20. 585H does come in 19deg as well, if you are veering towards a slightly weaker loft. This is all dependent on you being able to prise yourself away form TM!!!

I had one with the 85 X in it, and didn't like it. I reshafted it with an Ozik Altus and still didn't like it. The head is great, but like I said I don't think I get along with graphite in a hybrid.

Had the Rescue Dual TP, and the stock shaft is garbage. Sakman, I had the HB-001, and it worked well. I don't remember why I sold that one. I may try that again with a PX or KBS if the Rescue TP doesn't do the trick.
