Vijay is going to be using a Srixon ball. At the end of this year, he will be finished with his contract with Titleist and then he will be switching to Srixon's new Star ball. I was watching him test it out last week at Sawgrass on trackman. He will also be out of a contract with Cleveland. He is switching to all TaylorMade clubs.

That just doesn't sound right...not saying it isn't, just doesn't sound right.

Why you ask? He'd be switching to Srixon, which acquired Cleveland Golf, but leaving Cleveland Golf for TaylorMade...???

I've got a pretty good Cleveland source...saw him last week, if I see him this week I'll ask. The Cleveland tour van is pretty much Vijay's personal hauler--he has full reign to do as he pleases in there, and his clubs are all over the place in that thing. I just don't see him leaving Cleveland. I haven't asked anyone to get this opinion, it's just my personal opinion at this point (though I will make it a point to ask).

If he's leaving Cleveland why would he switch to the Srixon ball which is owned by Cleveland? Possible I suppose. Just doesn't make sense...

I was wondering the same thing; if Vijay is going to go to TaylorMade why not use their golf ball as well? It is possible, anything is, but it just doesn't make sense.

Also, not to split hairs, but Srixon is not owned by Cleveland. Cleveland is owned by SRI, the parent company that owns Srixon.

It did not make sense to me either but thats what was said. Leaving Cleveland to play a Srixon ball and TaylorMade equipment doesn't make sense so it is what it is. Hopefully its not just bs on Vijay's end.

I don't know Vijay, but from what I've seen I can imagine him being the type that might BS about something like that just to mess with ppl/the media.

VJ signed a life long contract with Clevland for 10 million or something like that. Also Clevland was bought by Srixon so I doubt that he would be switching to the ball and dumping the clubs. Couple that with the life long contract I highly doubt it. Maybe though.

Top 10 players in the world make at least 3 to 5 million annually from their club contracts, so a 10 million lifetime contract does not seem likely. Also players out on tour do not sign lifetime contracts... they just don't!!! But ask any cleveland rep and they will tell you that there are a few players switching to the z star(ala Vijay and Boo). The ball is supposed to be really really good!

Roger Federer has a lifetime contract with Wilson for using their equipment. While that is tennis, it wouldn't surprise me if the same happened in golf for superstar players.

Yes he does, but equipment in golf is MUCH more important(and technologically driven) than that of tennis. Not saying its never going to happen, but I know Vijay does not have a lifetime contract and do not know of a single golfer who does.

Actually, a few do, especially if they feel their career is winding down. It allows them to play as long as they choose without worrying about sponsors. Also, a typical lifetime contract may be for 10 million, but there are normally additional incentives and payments for performance after a given number of years.

As far as Boo and Vijay moving to a Srixon ball, it makes perfect sense since the parent company that now owns Cleveland also owns Srixon. Whether or not it is "that good" remains to be seen - my bet is they are switching because SRI is pushing for Cleveland staffers to put a Srixon ball into play.

I think Cleveland did press release about this 2 years ago. It might be on their web site still.

Who has a lifetime contract?

Rumor is that Vijay was given a lifetime contract with Cleveland. It is possible, although I can't find anything official. The closest thing I can find is from 2005:

"KAPALUA, MAUI, HI... Vijay Singh, the world's No. 1 ranked player, announced that he has signed a multi-year contract extension that will allow him to continue his longstanding relationship with Cleveland Golf. "This virtually assures that I will be playing Cleveland Golf for the rest of my PGA Tour career, and I am very happy about that," said Singh, who has endorsed Cleveland Golf since 2000."

Perhaps Vijay's quote may have been misunderstood. There are a few top tier players who have had lifetime contracts, Vijay may be one of them, especially considering his age and where he is career wise. But I can't find anything that confirms this.

Frankly, I'm tired of looking - lifetime contract or not seems a bit irrelevant. His contract was just renewed so a move to TM right now seems unlikely. But anything is possible...

I am pretty sure VJ did sign a lifetime contract. I remember it happing and the news that it made. As far as the ball goes both VJ and Boo play Cleveland who is owned by SRI who owns Srixon. As a Srixon staff guy I know that the bonuses you get for playing the equipment and the ball together are a lot higher.

It would make no sense to me why he would play TM stuff and not their ball.

all these guys are in it for the cash.

VJ probably got more money out of Srixon/Cleveland for using the ball.

as for life time, he sighned a contract that takes him to his fiftieth birthday, which is why he said my "PGA TOUR" career and not my career.

as for what they play, the balls are tweaked to the player by the manufacturer so they can play any company they want. thier are at least 15 different Pro V1's on the conforming list because they tweak for a player and then get approval.

anyway I get they guy getting as much cash as he can, if he gets hurt or doesn't play well he will be locked in for income.

I think people see VJ on the range for hours on end and take him too seriously, not saying it can't happen, and it's not impossible for contracts to be excused for the right amount of money, but he was probably just messing with someone.

all you need to do is play with the srixon ball and you will know why he is making the change. The ball IS that much better than the titleist.

Where do we get the ball to try?
