I think all he is doing is switching to the srixon ball....why switch equpitment when he is just starting to play good consistent golf again....people are making a big deal about nothing. I'm sure he is only switching the ball because callaway won the law suit against titleist... :russian_roulette:

The more I think about it, the more it makes sense for Srixon to switch VJ to their brand. I'm sure someone did a "study" on just how many clubs VJ sales.

X = the revenues created by VJ switching to Srixon equipment

Y = the lost revenues to Cleveland

I would surmise that since Cleveland is an established company, Y would be less than X. Srixon is still a relatively new entrant in the American golf market. Having VJ as the lead spokeperson could be a boon.

On the flip side, I have no idea what Srixon's balance sheet looks like but most of the companies that had recent LBO's are cash strapped. With credit not so cheap and easy in these hard economic times, those companies are looking to cut costs. VJ could be one of those costs.

Interesting read here. Why would Footjoy waste time filming commericials for 2009 if Vijay wasnt going to be part of the plan? This was just 2 weeks ago.

Why wouldn't he be part of the Footjoy plan? Neither Srixon nor Cleveland have a shoe line. Many players have contracts for every piece of clothing and equipment, often with a number of different companies.

Yes he does, but equipment in golf is MUCH more important(and technologically driven) than that of tennis. Not saying its never going to happen, but I know Vijay does not have a lifetime contract and do not know of a single golfer who does.

I think the tennis comment is a bit of a stretch. Tennis equipment has come along way in the past 20 years. I would say tennis is well ahead of golf in that respect. Here's a perfect example, only recently has golf equipment utilized over-sized heads in iron and drivers to in way that has appealed to the masses. Where tennis came out with similar racket head design over ten years ago.

My Cleveland/Srixon rep has been telling me for the past year that Vijay has been testing the Srixon and wanted to switch, but Titleist would not let him out of his contract. And I must add that the Srixon is in fact a MUCH better ball than the ProV1.

Well then, since you say it is not just a better ball but a MUCH better ball, I'm sold. As soon as their new product comes out I'm stuffin' my garage with 'em...

What is the point of your last sentence? Jeez...

Things to consider:

  • Maybe Vijay was using the older version of the Titleist PRO V1 and since this ball no longer available to him because of the lawsuit he needed to find another ball. Many pros never switched to the latest version of the PRO V1.
  • The Srixon ball is very good
  • He is not leaving Cleveland any time soon.

I obviously haven't played this new Star thing from Srixon, but having played both the ProV1 and the Srixon premium balls, and even though I am not a big fan of the ProV1, the ProV1 is in my book clearly a better ball. Sorry but the Srixons feel like rock in my experience.

its amazing to me that people judge a golf balls performance based on how it feels with the putter. Tour players can tell actual performance differences that average and low handicap players just can't tell. Titleist has sold better then the other brands purely on there long term in the business, tour presence, and incredible marketing. Its not the best ball, I don't believe that term exists. In fact titleist might have the worst cover consistancy of any ball with srixon maybe being the best. What it does have is an ether affect on people. just my two cents

of course people are going to judge balls how they feel in the short game.

a) short game is where 90% of average golfers can lower their scores

b) feel is an extremely important factor

most players will play a ball that feels great in the short game because it gives them more confidence. it might not actually be the "best" ball performance-wise however the best ball for each player is the ball they feel the most comfortable and confident with. plus, as you said, most average players really don't know or notice the difference when hitting woods or irons between a supposed "good" ball versus a ball like a Pro V1. Therefore, why not choose the ball that feels best around the green?

yes, I agree that most of titleist's hype and popularity comes from their advertising but in the end, for most decent golfers, its the product that can back up the advertising that always is the most popular. perfect example is the iPod. yes, there are tons of cheaper MP3 players on the market however the iPod does well because it not only has great advertising but also is a quality product. the iPod might not be the "best" product on the market, but couple a solid product with great advertising and you're gonna get a product that sells.

For the record - the lawsuit covers both the older version and the version currently on the shelf of the Pro V's.

granted I may be biased, but I know I am pumped to try the Z-Star....its had one hell of a December

Stenson wins the world cup with it Dec 1st

Stenson wins the Nedbank by 9 shots Dec 8th

Tim Clark wins with it Dec 14th

And if VJ was playing it last week....thats a sweep for December.

Consider that SRI, Srixon's parent company is the worlds second largest rubber producing company, their balance sheet is very strong. Cleveland is an established company in the US, more so than Srixon. But on the world stage, they have a very strong presence. In Japan, they hold the #1 or #2 market share position in forged clubs, competing with Bridgestone.

Right now the question is will they lose ground in the ball market. Many of the Srixon reps were let go in favor of the Cleveland rep. During the negotiations, somehow Cleveland convinced SRI that they should take over the operations of the US market since they had a stronger presence here.

Lets see, we are (Cleveland) nearly bankrupt, you bought us, we'll run things since we have a presence here. Granted we weren't successful but we are here. Makes sense to me.

Srixon is profitable, growing in distribution, and are makeing a profit. I know in my area that their golf ball bookings for next season are in the tanks. Many facilities purchased Srixon balls because of the rep. Once they did, they got sales so it was a win win situation. He was let go in favor of the Cleveland rep that just ships product without even seeing the customer. Because they don't want to see him.

To stay strong and profitable, changes will need to be made beyond the direction of the Tour.

I realize that Sumitomo Rubber is the parent company. I still have no idea what their balance sheet looks like or how diversified their company is. But just because they are big doesn't mean they are flush with cash. The auto industry has been beaten down more than most industries in these recent economic conditions. The strong yen is doing no favors for a company's whose revenues are predominantly outside of Japan. Additionally, many companies who purchased companies within the last 1 or so are realizing they paid waaayyy too much. With the current "credit freeze" a percentage of the purchasing companies are having cash flow problems. I have no idea if this is the case with Srixon. If it is, I could see why they might "let" VJ out of his contract in a cost cutting measure.

On the flip side, I think a more likely scenario is VJ is going to play Srixon going forward. He's there prime time player. Why have him play their "second fiddle" clubs? Plus, my perception is, VJ is quite popular in the Asian market. It would be a natural for him to play Srixon vs. Cleveland.

I have no first hand knowledge of the situation. I have second hand knowledge of it. Like the previous poster who stated something to the effect that around TPC, VJ has made it known he's switching clubs. I don't know this to be true but I believe it to be true. Come Kapalua, we'll all know for sure though. ;)

Golfweek Tour Blog states the following... just passing along info!

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Vijay Singh, at 45 the grand old man of the PGA Tour, has continually demonstrated the confidence to play with virtually any golf equipment.

Singh, a longtime user of the Titleist Pro V1x golf ball, won the Chevron World Challenge here at Sherwood Country Club with a Srixon Star ball. It seems he will switch officially to a Srixon ball at the end of the year when his Titleist contract expires. The move was confirmed by a Srixon official who asked to remain anonymous. When Singh was queried about it, he smiled and said nothing.

The Star is a new Srixon ball aimed at Tour-level players. Singh played the Pro V1x in winning two FedEx Cup events late in the season, but seems relaxed about changing allegiance. He and Jim Furyk would be Srixon’s most visible contract players.

Apparently Singh also will play for a new equipment company for 2009, going from Cleveland to TaylorMade. This rumor was swirling around Sherwood Country Club, site of the Chevron tournament. Once again, Singh chose not to comment.

Singh has been Cleveland’s most prominent staff member. He has drawn particular attention to Cleveland wedges, because he uses new wedges with fresh grooves for every major championship.

It is clear that Singh has benefited more than any other golfer from the absence of Tiger Woods.

With no Tiger, Singh ran away with the 2008 FedEx Cup points race. He won the PGA Tour money title. Now he has captured the Chevron event, hosted by Woods and benefiting the Tiger Woods Foundation and the Tiger Woods Learning Center.

As if to prove his individuality, Singh is the only big-name golfer in the world to play with Scandium alloy shafts in his irons. Scandium is sold by Element 21 Golf, which promises great performance with superb feel.

Such a claim might sound empty if not for Singh, who joins Woods, Phil Mickelson and Padraig Harrington as part of contemporary golf’s Big Four.

If Singh changes both ball and club preferences in 2009 and has a fabulous year at the age of 46, he will solidify his position as one of the most successful equipment switchers in professional golf history.

Um...Singh has benefitted more than any other golfer this year?!? Do Paddy and Camilo ring a bell, at all? Also, I would never say that Vijay ran away with the Fedex Cup, Camilo won just as many playoff events and as far as Im concerned, deserved the Fedex Cup more, let me elaborate... How can you win the last two events of the playoffs... and then not win the Fedex Cup? As far as Vijay moving away from Cleveland, it seems a little odd to me that he would switch from the ProV1x to a Srixon ball but move away from Cleveland clubs, no? Although if it is infact true, all I have to say is GOOD! Cleveland really needs to bring in a young gun or something! Bring in someone similar to Titleist's Adam Scott, TMAG's Sergio, Cobra's Villegas, Nike's Anthony Kim, or Adam's Aaron Baddeley. Its a little sad when CG's got Kevin Streelman leading the "young guns" department for CG, even though Kevin is an outstanding player, and I very much enjoy his additude, and golf play. Come on CG, get someone exciting in the mix! As far as the new ball, is there anymore insight Dan? I do like Srixons ball offerings but I havent found one that has the soft/spin characteristics that I prefer, (ProV1, B330-S, Platinum, ect.). I understand this adds to the durability of the ball, but thats something I am willing to sacrifice. Cheers.

While it is just personal preference, I disagree with your statement about bringing in the young guns. Cleveland's current lineup is actually really solid right now. I don't really think of Streelman as a "young gun" anyway, as he plays like and displays the qualities of a veteran.

To each their own... but I think CG has BY FAR the least exciting tour staff lineup off all the OEM's. Im sorry but Ken Duke others like him make me a little sick. There is no doubt that flashy young players draw people to the game (they certainly did for me), and in turn draw people to the brand and clubs they are playing. Shoot even Srixon has Stenson...

Interesting!

If this is accurate, I would say some people owe Wes Owens an apology, because this seems to confirm his earlier report!
