Pro V1 and X outs

Whats the difference??

I see Pro Vs on the shelf and they are selling for like 45 bucks. Then I go down the shelf a little ways and see Pro V1 x outs for 25 bucks. 20 bucks cheaper! Whats the difference?? Can anyone give me any insight into this??

Typically, X Outs have small cosmetic flaws but no performance flaws. However, they are not considered conforming golf balls as they have different markings than comforming Pro V1's, that being the X Out marking. SO they are fine to practice with but should not be used in rounds where scores are turned in for a handicap or for tournament rounds. I suspect many handicap rounds are turned in with the X out balls and also those marked as practice balls.

Yep. Cosmetics only and not suited for tournament play. Having said that, I use X-outs about half the time I play. I'll post scores using them. Nothing wrong with that. I feel that this is a rule that the USGA would be wise in relaxing on.

X-Outs cannot be used for tournament play as the manufacturer has identified them non-conforming in some way... But a Practive ball can be used. Practice balls are considered logo'd balls and are fit for play. I play PRO V1 practice balls because they are the same in every way except they say practice on them. Usually can be had for $25-$30/dzn. There is a USGA rule that specifically calls out practice balls and that they are legal for use.

Q. May I use an "x-out" ball or a ball stamped with "Practice" to play a round of golf?

 

A. Our present policy provides that if the List of Conforming Golf Balls or the One Ball Condition is in effect, a practice or logo ball may be used provided the other markings on the ball (i.e., pole and seam) correspond exactly to a ball listing on the current List of Conforming Golf Balls. Balls labeled with “PRACTICE” or a circled “P”, are essentially treated as a logo ball (such as a Mickey Mouse emblem). A player's name stamped on the ball is also acceptable. However, the original ball markings (i.e., pole and seam markings) must be readable in order for a Rules Official to determine whether that ball is on the List of Conforming Golf Balls. X-Out balls are not permitted to be used in any competition in which the List of Conforming Golf Balls or the One Ball Condition is in effect. However, if neither of these Conditions are in effect, X-Out balls may be used because all balls are presumed to conform unless they have been tested and found not to conform or are obviously non-conforming (e.g., too small or too heavy). (See Decisions 5-1/4 and US/5-1/101).

I use them all the time. Unless you are playing in a tournament with usga rules they would be a problem. For my every week 4 some they are just fine and somtimes you can get them dirt cheap 20 to 25 bucks a dozen
