Is the 5 worth the extra money?

Hey guys - I used to have a SG 2.0 and loved it. Now i am wanting to get a new Skycaddie and can't decide between the 2.5 and 5.0 model. Just trying to get opinions on the extra $$$ that the 5.0 cost and if it is really worth it.

Probably not, don't think color is that big of deal when you are looking for a number. Why not wait for the SG 3.5, I think it will start shipping within the next several weeks. TGW has it listed on their site and I think they have 1/16 as their expected shipping date, price looks okay as well.

The SG5 can be had for same price as 3.5 on some websites, since warranty is through SkyGolf doens't much matter where bught it.

 

THe color screen and larger screen is much easier to read in sunlight....also, does the new software updates apply to other than SG5?

 

SG5 is great unit, can't go wrong.

For me it was not only color but also the ability to control the backlight settings thaw swayed me towards the SG5

Regarding the 3.5...the only difference I could see between it and the 2.5 is the battery type (2.5 uses rechargeable while the 3.5 uses standard batteries). I think I'd rather have the rechargeable one anyway.

I have the SG2.5 and prefer the smaller size. FYI, the new software upgrade (20 course memory) works with the 2.5.

Owned the 2.5 and dumped it for the 5... I also loved the backlight, I was able to see distance at dusk and hit to a dark green. The backlight has mead me mad cash when your playing the last couple of holes in the dark because money is on the line.

 

Also the SG5 is mac compatible... I dumped all my PC stuff for Macs last fall

Good point. One other difference is the SkyGolf SG3.5 display is 220 x 160 pixel resolution where the 2.5 is 128 x 128 pixel resolution. With my crappy close up vision I need all the help I can get seeing the information displayed on the screen.

While big displays are nice the thing that appeals to me about the 2.5 over the 5 is that it is smaller. To you guys that use them already. How do you normally carry it around on the course (belt clib, pocket, attached to your bag/cart)?

I walk and carry most of the time and attach it to my bag with the belt clip attached to Sky Caddie's bag strap/mount. It's been very secure when I do that. When I ride I keep it the cup holder.

On my Powakaddy trolley I use the SkyCaddie temporary cart mount which is an excellent bit of kit. 'Temporary' is a bit of a misleading misnomer - should really be called 'removable' as it can be used on trolleys or carts (fixed to the windshield metal surround).

I have temp cart mount, others I've seen use cell phone like clip to attach to golf bag. The SG5 is not significatly larger than 2.5, both like a cell phone.

As far as I know, all the current models are mac compatible. At least that is what I gathered from the website.

If you want the screen twice the size of the 2.5, in color and kick arse... YES!

The 08 versions are Mac compatible... my 07 model was not.

So.. if you purchase a buddy's used model, it is PC only? If you buy new, then it is?

Would seem if one worked, they all would. Is it not a software issue? How could one know for sure?

I got my 2.5 not too long after they came out and it works fine on my Mac. I just don't care about the color display and prefer the smaller size.

Had an SG5 it was pretty and colorful. Then it was stolen out of my car. When I went to get a replacement and the SG2.5 was smaller and cheaper with same features minus color. I don't miss the SG5 at all. I used my savings to buy some PRO V's. BTW I know some don't like the membership you have to buy with Sky Golf but at least if someone steals your GPS they can deactivate it.

To answer the original question for me the price difference didn't justify the 5.0 vs 2.5. The 2.5 has done very well for me.

 

To answer your question. I usually keep it in the cup holder, and since I'm parking within a couple yards of the ball-to the side I just glance at it as I get out of the cart. If it is CPO, I walk with it to the ball and then usually stick it in my pocket when I'm done. If I have multiple clubs with me, I'll lay it down on the ground next to those as I hit. I haven't forgotten it yet :)

After much debate I went with the SG5. Many say the 2.5 is exactly the same except for the color but the "small" differences are what sold me on the SG5.

 

The screen is much bigger, it has auto backlighting for when it gets dark, the software updates seem to come out faster for the SG5 and the color screen is easier to read in sunlight. But most important to me- the battery can be replaced in the SG5. I bought a second battery and switch them out. I am getting 5 or 6 rounds in before I have to recharge them which is great if you are on a golf trip. The 2.5 has to be sent in to change the battery if it wears out over time.

 

I am extremely happy I went with the SG5.
