MacGregor MT clubs

Recommended Posts

I haven't seen much feedback....
With the collapse of MacGregor and clearance sales on all of their MT line of clubs seemingly everywhere, what do you think of thier clubs? I'm considering picking up several of these clubs, if their worth it?
I'm considering the MT driver, a FW wood(3 or 4), a hybrid(20*) and just maybe the MT-mid irons and a wedge or two.
Any feed back would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

First off do a search and you will find quite a few comments. I don,t want to repeat myself because you can find a few of my glowing statements. I will tell you I have a $400.00 driver + $300 shaft and I took a couple swings with an MT driver at the range and it performed well. But the deal of deals are the Forged Pro-Cs,CMs,and Ms. Were $799.00 last spring and they are quality, beautifull, great feeling ,and performing irons that are now peanuts. I don,t need sticks and try not to blow dough on equipment in this economy , especially since I have totally redone my bag both the last two years ,but I had to get a set of the Pro-Cs.

So for I have picked up the MT 460 9.5* w/ stiff Bassara, 15* 3 wood and a set of MT Pro CM DGS300. I'm waiting for a 56* w/10* bounce sand wedge and a DCT Lakewood putter that should be here in the next couple of days. All of these are new either from Ebay, GPPGOLF, Rockbottom and Golfetail. Grand Total including shipping is $445.00. If the wedge is any good I plan on picking up a 52* as well.

So far I've only hit the driver, 3wood and irons on the range. My initial impressions are:

Driver- Okay, nothng spectacular. Bassara Stiff was a little weak for my swing, spun alot and really high launch. Sold on Ebay already ($20 experiment, not to bad). I'm going to stick with my Nickent 4dx.

3wood- Actually hit the 3 wood quite well. Deep face on it. I'm glad I didn't get the 13*. I'm keeping this club but will probably put in a different shaft.

MT Pro CM's- Wow. What a nice set of irons. Swing weight of the 3 iron was off almost 1 point (D2 instead of D3), but I can live with that. The 7-pw blades are sweet. Feel is great when you hit the center of the club. Definetly lets you know when you miss it. THe 3-6 cavity's do offer a little more forgiveness then the blades and lack a little of the feel. Glad I got the CM's and not just the M's. The 3 iron in the M could butter bread. For $265.00 shipped I feel like I got an extremely good deal on a well built set of clubs. I'm thinking about putting some KBS Tour shafts in them and trying them. They haven't replaced my Maltby's yet, but I'll give them a chance.

Golfio has the iron sets on sale right now. Price is $399 but on check out they take an additional 10% off plus free UPS delivery and you can choose between M's, CM's, C's in either brushed chrome or the Gunmetal finish for $359.00 shipped.

GPPGOLF has the DCT putters right now for $29.99.

Just do a yahoo search for Macgregor stuff. It's being clearenced every where.

thanks stg, did the 3w have the stock mac graphite in it, i assume that played soft aswell since your gonna replace it, probably has a soft tip too huh, i was thinking of getting the mac driver with eather bassara or dvs(really not sure which would be best for me yet), but i have a few new s300's sitting around and would probably put those into a 15* 3w and an 18* hybrid if the stock graphite isn't that stout

i guess what im wondering is would dg s300's be stouter than the mac graphite(stiff) in the 3w and hybrid

I've got the MT mid irons (cast) in reg. flex steel, and I've already posted on them.

But here's a quick summary: Quality sticks that give you forgiveness, control and distance in a very attractive package. Maybe the best OEM bang for your buck on the market today. In these tough times, it's an especially good value.

I also found a good deal on a pro MT forged 58* wedge. Sweet.

My guess is that the MT Mids and the MT forged models will be gobbled up soon at bargain prices, and as user reviews start drifting in this year they'll gradually become known as high-quality, "under-rated" irons.

I just recently got the Pro M irons... AMAZING! They feel great on impact (granted it is on the sweet spot). You almost can't feel the ball at all when you hit it right. For me, the divits are not very deep or long compared to other clubs I have had. The ball flight seems a tad high, but I hit them normal distances. All in all they are great clubs and if you can get a set for a good price, you can't go wrong!

Oh, I also have the Nippon 1050 shafts if that matters to anyone.

S300 would in my mind play stiffer than the stock shaft. The stock shaft (stiff 65gr)isn't very good, but better than I was expecting. It's a little weak for me. I have a Comp NT 85 in stiff I'm going to put in it. I also have an Aldila By you 85 gr fairway pull I have laying around I might try too.

The S300 will probably play a little heavy at 42" unless Macgregor tip weights the head a bit. Or maybe there not all d3.5 with a 65gr shaft like the one I got. Or the stock shaft is heavier then 65 gr. I haven't pulled it yet and weighed either the head or the shaft. Stock club is 43.125 inches.

I was thinking about pulling the trigger on some Pro-CM's on the golfio site, but when I started the checkout process it didn't take the extra 10% off. Does anyone know of a coupon/promo code, or did I just wait a day or 2 too long? I don't really need irons, but that extra $40 off could probably get me to pull the trigger.

I just got the MT 460 from gpp for $69.99. This thing just wants to go strait no matter where it is hit on the face. Very, very forgiving. It is another good round from knocking my beloved J33R 460 out of the bag.

I just bought a set from www.gppgolf.com, I called them and Dustin tracked a set down from Macgregor in the Gunmetal. I got the MT PRO C/M w/ the Nippon Shaft for $300, bent 2* upright. They had a New Satin set w/ Dynamic Gold S300's for $270 in the shop ready to sell/ship. That is tough to beat. I picked up two of the MT wedges for $35 each. Give them a call, Dustin will hook you up.

I took the plunge on the set of Pro CM's. Golfetail just put a set up today on ebay for a $279 BIN, listed as like new, with stiff Nippon's. Exact same shaft as what I tried in the free demo program last summer, which I liked.

I'll probably just take them to a clubfitter when they come and have them check the lofts and bend them upright for me, and when the snow ever melts here in Ohio I'll put them up against the AP2's!

Read a couple opinions the 3 wd was hard to hit being deep faced. What is your opinion ,I myself haven,t hit one but like the driver with the few brief swings and love the Pro-Cs I got.

I've posted reviews on my recents MacGregor purchases elsewhere, but the biggest surprise I had from the clubs I bought was the 3 wood. I expected it to be tough to hit since it is a bit deep-faced but that was absolutely not the case. I've played with it once and hit two shots off wet dormant bermuda and both times the club slid easily thru the grass, got the ball up very easily with a superb piercing trajectory. I loved it! And, quite frankly I thought the shaft felt great, and you can see below what I'm used to playing. The driver (9.5 with DVS) is awesome and I'm thinking it's gonna bench my 909. I loved everything about it when I played with it. The irons are silky smooth and the wedges are great too.

Thats ironic ,I got the Mac Pro-Cs last week and really like them after 3 range sessions and think I am trading another set I have for some AP2s. Probably play the AP2s but I would keep the Macs if nothing else but look at them. I am sure I will alternate at times. Now all I need is the foot of snow to melt!

As you can see from my WITB I have a bag full of their stuff. My take on it is.....

MT driver is very good with the correct shaft.

Try hard to find NVG2 fairway woods. I know that these are not current but they are the best I have ever played, yes, even better than the TEE which I am also a big fan of.

PRO-M irons, again, best I have hit in years however, the Nippons will be replaced with X100's this spring.

Wedges have been a little disappointing. After a lot of grinding, they work well but Cleveland 588's are better for me.

IMO, MacGregor is making clubs that are better than most. Too bad so many buy into marketing and are passing these buy

hardten........where did all of the love go for the G10's? You gushed about those all year long and that you were tired of playing players CB's and wanted to make the game easier. Guess those beautiful looking and feeling forged players CB's (Mac's and AP2's) were just too sexy not to put back in the bag. Welcome back from the dark side. :D

I also picked up a set late last year of the Pro-CM. Did not get the deals you guys are getting but can't do much about it now. These clubs have great feel and even the forged blades are relatively easy to hit. You can get away with some slight toe hits and not lose much distance or direction. I'd love to pickup a driver as a backup, just not sure I really NEED another club right now.

I've been a MacGregor fan for about 6 years now. I think of their stuff as being most similar to Mizuno quality wise. They excel at players gear, but offer GI stuff to keep the lines rounded.

I Can't preach about the MT driver loud enough, at least for me. I was gaming a SMT nemesis 9 with a Graffalloy PL stiff in it, was hitting it around 280 but the trajectory was too low IMO, and it was pretty erratic for me. I managed to get a 10.5 MT 460 with the Stiff Bassara. First time I hit it, I hit it straight down the middle but very high, but 290. AS I've played with it, I hit the sucker way straighter and gained on average about 5 yards over my Nemesis driver. I'm tempted to pick up a 9.5 and see if I might have a more boring trajectory, but at the same time I can't really gripe much about 285 and in the fairway most the time.

Something else to consider is the Hybrids which are 49 at rockbottom right now were on the Hot List last year and have rated very very well.

Watching what is going on with Mac nearly has me in tears. OK well not really, but I am really sad about it, because the company has such a long legacy and really does make fantastic gear. I fully believe their stuff is right there with anyones, maybe better when it comes to blabes.

I just picked up a slightly used MT 460 with an NV 65-S on Ebay for $50 with free shipping. I've been playing a Cobra F-Speed with a stiff Blueboard which I like - my only gripe is the trajectory is higher than I'd prefer. I tend to hit all of my clubs very high. The great comments on here and the "firesale" situation with current Mac products got me intrigued so I found what I think was a fantastic deal. I went out and played yesterday and the very first swing was nutted right down the middle with a lower trajectory than I usually get but certainly not too low. This continued and I immediately felt comfortable swinging this club. I hit both drivers throughout the round for the sake of comparison. I've never been particularly bothered by the "Cobra sound" and I love the "killed it" feel that I get from my F-Speed, but the way the ball jumps off the MT face with a subtle click was really nice. The Mac trajectory was consistently lower than the Cobra - not an expert but I think it was probably closer to ideal - at least to my eye. The distance was about the same for both clubs, but the ground down here is really soft due to a lot of rain lately and I think the Mac would be longer if the ball didn't just plop down in place like it was yesterday. Will the Mac boot my Cobra out of the bag? It just seemed to want to go straight and that's not always the case with the F-Speed. I'm going to play a little more with both and see. I know this: this was an insane deal for $50. It's just a beautiful traditional shape that looks great to the eye and inspired confidence immediately. What a shame this company's going down and even more of a shame: I don't have the money to pick up a set of Pro-C irons!

Played 35+ years and 20+ sets of mainly OEM forged players CBs & a few blades. Xtours,MP30s,Hogan Pros, R7tps, of late. Had to get the Pro-Cs and MT driver with DVS shaft. I have already posted you won,t find a nicer set of irons than the Pro-Cs. Hit the driver a few times and I am impressed. I have played MacGregor off and on over the years and I do have a soft spot for them and the stuff that is currently being discounted to high heaven has to be the best deal going. Finances are very tough right now and I just got a set of AP2s in trade that will be my primary set but those Pro-Cs are staying even if only to ocassionally play.
