Really old Hogan Irons

I was able to get a hold of my garndfather's clubs last christmas and now that my gear is pretty much where I want it, I want to start working on his. I know that for the woods (old AMF Blacks) that I will need to send them to Golfworks or Golfsmith to have them restored if they can be. But the irons are a different story. I don't have any pictures of the conditions yet, but I will edit here and post them when I can. They are all rusting a lot. The 7 iron is the worst (I guess he liked that club). They are the 1967 Percussion irons and the 6 iron is a 1960 Power Thrust. Can these be saved? I don't think they are epoxied in, it appears as though they are pinned to the shaft (I think that's how they used to do it). Can anyone get the heads off and rechrome them? And after that, could they be epoxied into a current shaft? I ask because I would really like to get them back into playing shape and take them out a few times, especially when I am playing my uncle and father (they are their dad's old sticks after all). Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Contact The Iron Factory for the rechrome - they have a website. They can be saved if the rust is not too bad. Probably will beed a regroove job. They can be reshafted with current .355T shafts.

Lots of the older iron sets had a pin inserted at the top of the hosel, running through the shaft to the other side of the iron to prevent any rotation of the head on the shaft. A simple punch (and some care...) serves to remove them. HOWEVER...removing the existing pin means that either there's a hole on either side of the hosel once you reshaft with an epoxy or you have to cosmetically 'repin' the heads; a most tedious process. I can't speak for others, but what I typically do, with darned good luck, is cut off the old shaft and then drill down the hosel to eliminate the existing pin. I'm then, with a vice grips normally, able to remove the old shaft WITH THE PINS still nicely filling in the old head on the outside. The epoxy used to set the new shaft gets enough purchase on the pin where it intersects the inside of the hosel that it's there for good. Not hard to do, really. Just my .02.

DAYUM! Those are the 1967 Ben Hogan Percussion Irons. Very nice condition as well (especially for being over 40 years old) I have those woods as well but I have 1-2-3-4-5. My friend just gave those to me and I'm looking to get the refinished sometime. Good find though and those will be quite a gem when finished.

If the original poster doesn't want them I am selling that entire set for $100 plus the shipping charges. If anyone is interested, I have several old set that I will part with for a very fair price. I work for myself and business is dreadfully slow right now and I need the money more than I need the clubs. If anyone is interested in the other ones you see, send me a PM and we can work it out.

I like the Wilson Sam Snead irons a whole lot. I could do a couple of 60's only outings this season. How much for the set?

i don't think the rust on those looks too bad at all. you should be able to have those restored to look great, no problem. also, concerning the pins or i guess the pin holes, bobbers idea sounds great, but if you're having them refinished, you can always have them weld in the holes while the chrome is off. should be a lot simpler. now for a reshaft without rechroming, bobbers idea is really great.

According to a book I read, the old epoxy was not totally reliable so the shafts were fastened in with pins as well as epoxy.
