09' Callaway Iron Tip Sizes

Hmmmmm
For 4 years i have been staffed with this company and have never questioned any descision they have made, but i am curious as to why a company would suddenly change their ENTIRE iron line to .370 parallel tip hozels, yes even the 09 X Forged.

Years ago they went to .350 tips in the WOODS and there are quite a few shafts out there that only come in .335s. Ok, adapters were made and logically with the the S2H2 bore, one may want a "thicker shaft" to stay sturdy. I can stomach this one with a glass of water

But .370 parallel tips irons?, i simply don't see the reasoning. Tour Concepts and Black Nickel KBS' are two shafts that come to mind that dont come in parallels. I understand a taper can be tipped, or shimmed to fit...but for those who don't have access to a tour van, or a good clubmaker it's a real pain if you would like to try some more "exotic" iron shafts. Not to mention they will get quite stiff.

their shaft options include all the normal stuff. The Rifles, ProjX Flighted, ProjX Non Flighted, Black Gold, DG, DG Sensicores, DG Superlites, and a few Nippons...but theres so much out there for the everyday club junkie to try that won't go in easy.

i know this is an extremely small portion of the golf population, but why not appease everyone for no additional cost?

Yeah is doesn't make sense to me, you're telling me Callaway replaced their entire inventory of tapered shafts and went to all parallel? I can only imagine they had a HUGE stock of taper shafts. I would bet still .355 taper.

Hi

You could be right.

I bought mine from a very reputable eBay seller who guarantees 100% authentic. He's been selling both the .355T and .370P for a month or so, it now looks like his stocks are running out..

I paid US$560 + shipping but the A$ is killing me at present.

I previously purchased my X-20 Tour 3-PW iron set from him and local Callaway agent said they're authentic.

Cheerz :) :D ;)

All of them that i have been working so far are PARALLEL.

I'm still don't quite understand either why they do this.

Plus the insertion depth are around 1 1/2 inch at least on X forged 2009.

No wonder when i hit the X forged 2009 iron kind of higher ball flight than normal and felt funny light on towards the shorter iron.

It's a PITA to reshaft and shim them one by one with a taper tip which IMO preferred and expected.

My 2 cents!

Hi Joe,

My X-22 Tour insertion depth was 1/4" more than my X-20 Tour 3-PW, plus the raw head weights were about 5 to 7 grams under your stated standard head weights in your sticky, plus Callaway manufacturing added 2gm to 6gm of brass tip weight.

It made it more difficult than usual adapting my Ns Pro 850GH 85gm pullouts from my X-20 Tour.

  1. I had to lengthen shafts by 1/2" to allow for the 1/4" deeper insertion and I'll allowed an extra 1/4" to pickup about 1.5 swingweights
  2. Needed to use tip weights (yuk) ranging from 2gms to 6gms, I was looking for a D1 swingweight taking into consideration I was loosing 40gms in shaft weight, approx. 125gm -> 85gm
  3. Also added about 2gms of lead tape used for fake leadlight windows, it's only 9mm wide, but it's a bit thicker and also has adhesive tape on one side

Very messy and time consuming build, needed to dryfit components then workout a fitting strategy that was compromise after compromise, but I'm really happy with my finished product and I'm just so fussy it's not funny.

I discounted the original D2 swingweight by about 1/3 to D1 to take into consideration I was using a 40gm or so lighter shaft.

Full specs as per image.

I found those problem the same case too so far!

I still couldn't believe it my self either who made the decision to put parallel tip on them. May be to some is nothing wrong with that, but one of my customer said "It's like buying component or clone"...It makes me think harder before i can answer him with a correct response.

Hi,

Well I tried the X-22 Tours with Ns Pro 850GH on the GC and must say I didn't like them when comparing to my X-20 Tour with NS Pro 850GH shafts.

The X-22 Tour felt harsh/clunky and not sweet at all, I was expecting them to feel softer than X-20 Tour from all the Callaway promotion material.

I really hate adding tip weights and this may have contributed to the harsh/clunky feel.

Oh well, I better start rebuilding my X-20 Tour iron set, I don't have weeks to get used to tthe X-22 Tour as it's pennant golf season, currently playing matchplay trials.

Cheerz :) :D ;)

Hi Joey,

From what you've seen sofar with the X-22 Tour irons, how do you rate them compared to the X-20 Tour irons.

Personally I was disapointed with the performance of my X-22 Tour so I've decided to rebuild my X-20 Tour set for the time being, get another set of Ns Pro 950GH or 1050GH shafts then maybe try the X-22 Tour a little later with slightly heavier shafts so I don't need to use as much tip weighting.

I still can't understand why Callaway in all of their wisdom, intentionally made heads some 7gms less than the normal and as you said, why use .370P over .355T shafts.

Cheerz :) :D ;)

I don't see any differences in performance, very tiny if any!

In fact, I still go with X Tour over those two IMO.

To me for a game improvement, X tour has one of the perfect design for every aspect to make this game easier to play. The only adjustment to make is the bounce angle for certain type of player. This is why they have the T grind series which can be modified easily from the retail version. Lots easier to adjust the swing weight without messing up the CG to far. I may even pick on in a good condition and kept it for my old days. LMAO! :D

YES!!! I never agree using a parallel tip hosel which lead into descending weight shaft choices in most cases. It just weird feeling for me.

I was surprised as well when my local clubmaker told me they were parallel tipped, and insertion was quite deep. What was really a pain was that the heads were so light feeling even at the designated d2 swing weight, despite the deep insertion. w2

Surprise surprise! :)

Somebody came out of the cave! LMAO! ha ha ha!

Hey Joe,

Yup, unbelievably I've been quite restrained! Xxio just caught wind of this thread, and texted me "x 22 parallel????". My x22s went through the stock px flighted, to kbtour, to dgr4 in the span of 5 days. So ho ho ho! W2 :busted2:

ps: might be visiting bay area by april or may, and will drop by.

BTW, At least you still have a hobby and $ to support it. LOL!

FG51s,

That was why i was puzzling on the 1st few sets because of working on a couple tour issues that are TAPER...however, who know how many set going to a non rank pro are parallel too? I won't be surprise.
