Another Great Phil Victory in the first 3 months of the year.

And after people crapped on his game.
So, Phil wins again between the months of Jan and Mar.

Seriously, this guy doesn't dissapoint at the Jan, Feb, and Mar tournaments that Tiger doesn't play in.

If there is one thing that is a lock on the PGA tour, it is Phil winning at least one event between these three months in tourneys Tiger is not in.

And I feel the XG #9 making a resurgence in sales.

The way Mickelson played starting out the year, I never would have thought he would have been in contention, nevermind win. Way to go fill, stop being a club-ho and stay with the sticks you used today. I hope he is in contention the rest of the year.

The timing couldn't be better. Mickelson comming off a win and Tiger returning. I'm sure the PGA Tour couldn't be more excited. Many of the top ranked players are playing well, Mickelson, Stricker, Choi, Kim, Love III, Villegas and so on. This is great for the PGA Tour and great for the game of golf.

This should be an exciting 2009.

you really have to be a fan for that to be impressive... :man_in_love: ...

A win is a win. There isn't a footnote at the bottom of the win log saying "He played like crap today."

Phil had his D game at best today and still beat an awesome field.

When Tiger does this, all you read on this board is "Tiger wins again! Played like crap! He's #1!!!"

Why is it different for Phil? Give the guy some credit - FOR ONCE!

Phil is nothing more than second rate. He is a movie preview before the big show.

I will admit he played pretty well today just when it seemed like things were going poorly...

However, the guy cannot expect to play like that and compete in a major. I see his decision making is still never going to change, but hey, thats his perogative.

He gets paid alot. His wife is attractive. He has a nice family.

It just sucks he is playing in the era of the greatest ever. I am not a Tiger lover, but the dude is unstoppable. He understands what it takes to win majors. Not 3, 14 of them and counting.

Right. Second Rate?

As Second Rate as Roger Federer, (less the majors) to Rafa Nadal. I put Phil above Andy Roddick when comparing him to Tennis players.

More verification that it's not how good are you playing. It's how good ARE you? Momentum and slumps are extremely overrated, when it's the top of the heap you are dealing with.

I've always loved it in Las Vegas sportsbooks, when a premier team has been in a brief downturn and suddenly everyone is betting against them. Then the joint is wonderfully gulp silent when that team finds its old self and destroys the number.

Phil is a great talent, but similar to that peak form always eligible to resurface on short notice, the recent swing problems and erratic putting have hardly been shelved, based on one event. We'll see them again, very soon.

Bottom line.........the guy has 35 tour wins.

Very few players have attained that, a lot of Hall of Famers have accomplished far less!

........and deep down, Tiger would love to have a win at Riviera.

14 majors....win at Rivera...hmmm....

Phil hit 3 wood off the 18th today.

I for one was glad to see that. You knew right away he was playing smart and for par. Maybe Bones glared at him or something. I feel bad for Freddie. He so choked and he had a clean shot in to the green.

I'm not downplaying Tiger's 14 majors at all..............I'm just saying it has to knaw at him because he's never tamed Riviera

He never one in Milwaukee either.

All the Phil fans are easy to spot now! It's funny. The guy wins a second tier tour event and they sing his praises. Let's not get carried away, he had some good rounds this week, and finished well today to finish ahead of some players who stumbled home. He has ALOT of work to do to get his game where it needs to be to compete in majors with you know who. It will be interesting to see where he goes from here.

Riviera is a second tier tour event? Do you mind qualifying that one?

anyone who says they would rather watch Phil and the rest of the PGA Tour than Tiger, must have been sleeping under a rock for the last 12 years. Are you serious?

I'm the same. It has nothing to do with the liking or disliking any other player - Phil is just enjoyable to watch. He gets into more trouble with wayward shots than anyone else in the game at that level, and recovers from those shots better than anyone else out there.

Not a major or The Players. Not a WGC. Not Arnie or Jack's event. A second tier event. Certainly better than John Deere or Reno- Tahoe

It doesn't have anything to do with like or dislike with me either. And Phil hits some great shots, But Tiger is much more entertaining. Some of the things he does, unfathomable.

So by your definition all but 10 events are 2nd tier?

Yet the field at Riviera this weekend included every recent major championship winner other than Tiger...but its 2nd tier?

It goes to show how deep the disdain for Phil goes, the haters will stoop to revisionism and relegate anything he wins to 2nd tier.

Uh, Phil has won The Players and Bay Hill and twice where TW can't get it done at Riv.

How come no one has mentioned that 2006 (or 2007?) season-end tourney where Phil went head to head with Tiger -- and won?

Phil's got game, and there were some experienced veterans in the field at Riviera today. Phil finally shelved the driver, and he got the win. [Really, he bombs the 3 wood so far, he's outhitting most players hitting driver. He should leave the driver in the bag more often -- like, at the first wayward shot!]

Phil won, and the win wasn't second rate by any definition. I would have been okay with a Couples or Stricker win also, by the way (I root for Americans), but for the sake of argument ...

Phil won.

Regarding the British Open, someone in another thread dismissed Phil's chances there, like it could never happen (like, "Ha, ha, ha, quit taking that medicine, you nutjob"). This, according to the poster, is because Phil's game is designed for high ball flights designed to stick greens. Well, for the sake of argument ...

What do you think Greg Norman's ("Mr. Shark") game is? And where did he finish in the 08 British? (disclaimer: I think "the Shark" is a jerk.)

as for claiming a great tournament like the LA Open is 2nd rate, you are a fool. former winners are some of the greatest to play the tour

Jimmy Demaret

Ben Hogan

Sam Snead

Byron Nelson

Arnold Palmer

Billy Casper

Hale Irwin

Tom Watson

Johnny Miller

Fred Couples

Nick Faldo

Gee whiz, what's up with the dislike for Phil around here? I can understand the love for Tiger, everybody loves a winner. On telecasts Phil seems quite popular with the gallery. Gives thoughtful, intelligent interviews, acknowledges the crowd, fun to watch with his high risk style of play and ability to recover. But the vast majority of posts are negative and stoop to comments about bad shirts, man boobs, etc.

I don't get it other than you are safe behind your computer monitor and if you were attending a tournament you'd be yelling "C'mon Phil!" and hoping for a low five, just like everybody else.
