Another Great Phil Victory in the first 3 months of the year.

How come no one has mentioned that 2006 (or 2007?) season-end tourney where Phil went head to head with Tiger -- and won?

Phil's got game, and there were some experienced veterans in the field at Riviera today. Phil finally shelved the driver, and he got the win. [Really, he bombs the 3 wood so far, he's outhitting most players hitting driver. He should leave the driver in the bag more often -- like, at the first wayward shot!]

Phil won, and the win wasn't second rate by any definition. I would have been okay with a Couples or Stricker win also, by the way (I root for Americans), but for the sake of argument ...

Phil won.

Regarding the British Open, someone in another thread dismissed Phil's chances there, like it could never happen (like, "Ha, ha, ha, quit taking that medicine, you nutjob"). This, according to the poster, is because Phil's game is designed for high ball flights designed to stick greens. Well, for the sake of argument ...

What do you think Greg Norman's ("Mr. Shark") game is? And where did he finish in the 08 British? (disclaimer: I think "the Shark" is a jerk.)

Don't you get it that the Phil haters are such zealots that their arguments don't have to make sense? (E.g. Riviera is a 2nd tier event.)

All the Phil fans are easy to spot now! It's funny. The guy wins a second tier tour event and they sing his praises. Let's not get carried away, he had some good rounds this week, and finished well today to finish ahead of some players who stumbled home. He has ALOT of work to do to get his game where it needs to be to compete in majors with you know who. It will be interesting to see where he goes from here.

Second Tier?

have you been living under a rock.

I agree with many other posters chastising those who give phil a hard time.

You have to feel sorry for Phil. When Phil was in college before Tiger came along, he was "the" guy, the one that that everyone had been waiting for to beat all of Jack's records....heck, he even won a PGA Tour event as an amateur! Then a young Tiger Woods comes along as has as much talent as phil, if even more, and Mickelson is relegated to "nothing more than second rate" player? I mean, I like Tiger Woods as much as the next guy, and love what he has done for the game....but I have alot of respect for someone who, despite being upstaged by Tiger several times has still had a stellar career, easily in Top 3 players of the past 15 years.

I just feel that anyone who can criticise Phil Mickelson's ability as a player needs to have a look at every other player on tour in the Past 10 years, and find someone else such a record.

You guys are funny! Get off Phils nuts!

A second tier event. Not a major, or premier world class event. Obviously better than John Deere or Reno-Tahoe. Is it that hard to understand?

And as far as being a fool, let's not get carried away.

Obviously, I am not downgrading the history of the tournament. Yes it is rich. However the event does not carry the clout that other events carry.

As stated earlier, a win is a win. I'm not trying to take that away. He didn't play great today, and he has a long way to go.

I mean seriously guys, it ain't that big a deal. Yes, Phil is good. Yes, he will contend in majors. Yes, he will win again. Just don't be so quick to crown him the king.

Glad to see Phil pull out a win today. It looked like he was going to lay an egg for a while there, but he played really solid the final 3 holes.

Gee whiz, what's up with the dislike for Phil around here? I can understand the love for Tiger, everybody loves a winner. On telecasts Phil seems quite popular with the gallery. Gives thoughtful, intelligent interviews, acknowledges the crowd, fun to watch with his high risk style of play and ability to recover. But the vast majority of posts are negative and stoop to comments about bad shirts, man boobs, etc.

I don't get it other than you are safe behind your computer monitor and if you were attending a tournament you'd be yelling "C'mon Phil!" and hoping for a low five, just like everybody else.

I wouldnt call it a, "great win" by Phil. He blew a 4 shot lead, was 2 shots behind at one point in time and he won only because Stricker choked.

Im pretty sure his check will cash all the same

Riviera second tier is beyond nuts. Riviera is one of the most historic events and one that guys consider the best event to win besides a major

Hilarious..... Phil could win 11 more majors and he will still be looked at as Phil and Tiger is better..... I would rather watch Phil and the rest of the PGA then Tiger anyday!

we will talk when he wins 5 majors...never mind 11. :man_in_love: ...

to those who wonder why some detest Mickelson....

his peers on the tour think he is a complete fake...some fans see through the facade.

Mickelson is a very good golfer..no one is taking that away from him..no one can, but i suppose it is the golf demographics..he gets more mention than his record suggests...kinda like Norman..and he gets compared too much to Tiger...he shouldn't. Not in the same talent bracket. This doesn't mean he is not talented. He is. I just don't see him as good as Faldo, Seve, Watson, Trevino etc..

It seems like he lacks discipline and to those who say, guess how many tournaments, majors he would have won had Tiger not been around, I don't think he would have won any..he wasn't motivated to even change his lousy swing mechanics...until Tiger came on the scene.. he has a nice resume..and the 3 majors and Players not withstanding, most of his wins are tier3...lots of Greater Hartfords, FBR, Bob Hope, i bet half his tournament wins are tournaments like that....no WGC tourneys..zero. 35 tournaments is a great number...delve deeper and it's not as impressive as the best of their eras. The majors are..3 majors are no slouch.

Really? Beyond nuts? JA5ON are you a complete idiot?

Sean I must be if im arguing this fact with you

but fact is, you have proven to be in about 5 posts in this thread

well, after reading Ja5on's assertion that Mickelson wil win 3x more than Tiger this year, I gotta agree with seanh...you are beyond nuts.

at least base your projections on reasoning..the most Mickelson has won on tour is 4 in one year. Masters, Greater Hartford, Bob Hope and another tier 3 tourney..this is the year he had his first great run in he majors. I don't think he has the mental stamina to win more than 2-3 tournaments a year.

WGC Events

Mercedes-Benz

Arnold Palmer Invitational

Memorial Tournament

The Tour Championship

Second Tier:

Buick Invitational(Torrey Pines)

AT&T(Pebble)

Northern Trust(Riviera)

Verizon(HarbourTown)

Wachovia

Byron Nelson

Crowne Plaza(Colonial)

St. Jude

AT&T(Congressional)

THIRD TIER:

Bob Hope( hate to say it. thats what it has become)

Mayacoba

Puerto Rico

US Bank

Legends Reno-Tahoe

John Deere

Buick Open

This should give you an idea of where I'm coming from. Needless to say, the history at some 2 tier events is undeniable, and the venues are classic. They do not however attract the best players, because of purse size or prestige, or whatever. This is strictly the way I see it IMHO. Winning any of these events is very difficult, and a win is a win.

I've got to agree. Phil is extremely fake. I've met the guy and know other people in the golf business who have met him as well and they all say the same thing. In front of the camera he's Mr. Nice Guy but a real jerk away from it.

Yeah he has talent and nobody can say that he doesnt, but for someone to say they would rather watch Phil over Tiger. Come on....gimme a break.

When Phil goes head to head with Tiger and beats him on a consistent basis or in a major then maybe I'll give him some respect. But I don't anticipate that happeneing anytime soon.

What a poorly written post.

I'm guessing you are lying about meeting him. I've meet him and he was awesome to me. I live just a few exits away from Phil and everyone I have met that has met him in the local community says pretty much one of two things; he was a very nice guy and he's extremely interesting to talk to.

Also, you don't respect him because he is not as good as Tiger!?! So you only respect one guy on the PGA tour? :man_in_love:

Phil is class and clutch. I hate tha bashing he receives.

He is the man. You all can have Eldrick.

Phil ditches driver when the wheels are comig off and goes with 3 wood off the tee.

That is how it is done.

He will win a few more this year.

hey, you got me on that one..

that Phil Driver in your avatar blinded me..too much bling. so what exactly would playing 3 more tournaments than Tiger have to do with him winning more? since you are tied to Phil's hip, you should know he doesn't play beyond the PGA...he is a family man..didn't you know that?

You still havent grasped it yet. I didnt say he was gonna play 3 more events, he will play 3times as many as tiger plays, thus upping his average. You do realize Tiger only plays majors or WGC events these days

As for my avatar thats my driver, Phil is a lefty :russian_roulette:
