Why use such heavy shafts?

i am wondering why the LDA guys use such heavy driver shafts. Is it because they cant find a stiff enough shaft at low weights? It seems like you could swing a lighter shaft a lot harder then those 115g beasts.

the reason i ask is because im trying to build a 47" 7.5 degree FT5 Draw with a long shaft in it. Im thinking if i can find something in the 65-75 gram range stiff enough it would be easier to swing.

or....

ive got a fubuki 73X x5ct lying around....is there any possible way to get this thing to play 48" and stiff enough? id tip it as much as it took and dont really care, im just wondering if its possible.

You can't get a XXX stiff shaft in a lightweight version. There simply is not enough material in an ultralight shaft to make it stiff enough for a 130 mph swing speed unless you are very, very smooth...

There accuracy would also be completely out of control if it were too light.

so most companies, stiff to extra stiff only adds 4-6 grams....why does it need so much more to get to XXX stiff?

I think most LDA guys play their drivers at about 50 inches, so there is also increased length to account for the heavier weight. Also, just the sheer force that these shafts are put under requires more material and more weight, otherwise they would just be snapping shafts every 10 swings or so. Check out the kick in Jamie Sadlowski's shaft in Golf Digest a few months back.

I don't know where you are getting those 115 numbers but most guys are playing house of forged shafts and they are around 80 grams.

Dobyn , Sadlowski both hit these. Zuback used a pm 702 to win a couple years ago. 115 is just crazy talk.

Most of the LDA shafts are in the 78-85 gram weight class and usually XX...sometimes XXX. The longest approved lenght is 50" as measured standing flat against a wall. This is usually in the 48.375 to 48.5" length. We build the clubs Derek Hines used in the ReMax Worlds last fall. Higher swing/ball speeds need a combination of weight and swing weight for control issues...you gotta get it in the grid to win!

If you are strong enough to swing a long shaft faster than a regular length shaft, I don't think an x will be stiff enough for the long length without being too whippy. I swing an x in a 44.5 driver and an xx in a 48" and the progression seems about right. The longer shaft slows most folks swingspeed down instead of automatically making the club head go faster so going up in length doesn't always give everyone ANY sort of advantage.

3X 4X 71-72 grams 270-280 cpms so there are stable shaft that are longer and lighter weight

between 70-85 is the norm for LD shafts
