hogan's big grips?

Read in another topic that Mr. Hogan used very large grips, although he was average sized.... allowed him to go very hard at the ball without getting snappy. Anyone know anything about this? searched and didn't find much about it.

Did Mr.Hogan drop off his clubs to have you regrip them?

 

-Never heard anything about Hogan playing with bigger grips other than what would be considered normal for his hand size (otherwise, we'd all have been playing jumbos for the last 50 years), but there's no question it would quiet your hands - try an experiment with one of your irons, it's at worst a $10 experiment.

Your right about that... anyone know the ratio of tape wraps from a standard to a midsize if you were to beef one up. like standard +4 =midsize?

There's a post in the clubwrx section by thewitt from a while back that gives you the typical thickness of one wrap of double sided grip tape and the amount of buildup that you'd need for 1/64th, 1/32nd and 1/16 over using a standard 580 butt grip on a 580 butt shaft. With a little math you can work out other variations, like starting with a 580 on a 600 butt, or how to deal with th 610, 620 and even 630 butt driver shafts that are common today.

I have never liked the feel of a midsize grip....too spongy. I go with 4 wraps of grip tape. JMPO

I don't think Hogan's grips were put on with more than 1 or 2 wraps. He said that when your playing your absolute best the club felt "small" in your hand. When Jody wrote "Afternoons" at the end of the book he says "so keep your grips thin", or something to that affect. Hogan had a reminder put under his grip, which built the grip up some, but other than that I don't think they were that thick. I'll have to check Jody's book again if there is more detail about the number of wraps. I do know Hogan liked a lot of tape under the putter grip though.

 

Ok, according to "Afternoons with Mr. Hogan". his grips were full cord 58 round, name label turned under.
