best sub 400cc driver comparison
983K vs R510tp..

Both of these tiny powerhouses have been honored again and again by so many members. I feel we hit the wall with driver size/control, and i'm wanting to go back down to the smaller head. I Just have so much more confidence with the small headed driver. The only 400 or less driver i still have is an old burner 420 in the closet.. its ok but nothing like ive heard these two described as. I plan on grabbing one of these, hell both if their cheap enough... love to hear some input on your experiences with either one of them. Maybe a head to head if someone has hit them both.. thanks

Really? c'mon guys half an hour and no small head driver fan's around? We have all heard about the mini Dymo. Seems to be the hot ticket, going around quietly.... Who wants to pay for something new when you might already own something better, or pick up a used version of the 510 or 983k for like 69bucks, ive been searching around.

Need your help, ive looked around at the shops locally and no one has either of these to test hit. Id have to order one online and id like some feedback before i buy. Thats why i started the post.

Get both, they play VERY different. The 983K is spinny, described as "a 5 wood masquerading as a driver", feels tremendous, very workable, confidence inspiring. The 510 is a deep-face, low spin classic. Feels wonderful when the ball melts into that face. You can hit it just as hard as you want to and generate long bombs with the right shaft. Not quite as workable as the K, but VERY dependable.

It's personal preference, obviously, but I love my 510TP. I've had it in the bag for YEARS, and just recently started playing around with a 905R. The setup and feel is just amazing, and I love the Speeder shaft that came stock with it, as well. Personally I was never a fan of the K, but again, just personal preference. Not sure you can go wrong with either one, just depends on what suits your game better.

I've had them both, and they are both truly excellent. One thing they share in common is that they are relatively low launching drivers. After getting properly fitted a few years back, turns out I needed something with a higher launch. If you fall into the same category, I'd highly recommend the Cleveland Launcher 400 and the Callaway Great Big Bertha II. Like the name says, the Launcher is 400cc. On the GBB II you can chose the original at 380cc, or the second generation at 415cc. I've got the 380cc version with a YS6 shaft and it goes in the bag whenever the Launcher starts getting stale.

If you need a low launcher, you can't go wrong with either the 983 or the 510tp. For what it's worth, for me the 510 was easier to draw and the 983 was easier to fade. And the 983 had a slightly "harder" feel (or maybe sound?) to it. The 510 was more "soft."

Loved my 983K until I cracked the face. It is not real forgiving, but it gives you tons of feedback and can hold its own against anything today as long as you stick a shaft in that works for your swing.

I've played both and would go with the R510tp... but I prefer more deep faced clubs... the 983k is more shallow.... My favorite sub 400cc Titleist Driver is the 983e btw.... neutral/deep faced/CANNON...

the 983e and R510tp are my two sub 400cc favs.... both excellent... 983k always had draw bias for me and I prefer a driver that's dead neutral.....

Out of the K and TP... R510tp all the way...

Have both drivers in my collection but haven't brought em out in some time. If I recall, the 510 TP sits about a degree open and the 983K sits neutral to closed. Can't go wrong with either gem. Personally, I thought the 983K had better workability and launched a little higher becuase of the shallow face as described in the prior post. Depends on which shaft you have as well. The stock Fuji 757 with the 510 TP head was a great combo. Lower spin and launch.

All-in-all, if I were to compare them both, I would say that the 983K is a touch more forgiving just because it sat a little closed and you were able to launch it a bit higher. As described in a prior post, I would agree that the 983E is a better comparison to the 510 TP. Both are deep-faced, low spinning drivers.

If I were shopping for a classic driver, I would get both just for my collection.

983 E gets my vote at 350cc. 905 S if you move up to exactly 400cc. Both low spin, deep faced monsters.

Some flavor of the month driver.
Some driving iron for Links courses.

A hybrid to save my bad shots.
Titleist blades when I feel lucky otherwise something more forgiving.
A Vokey wedge or 2.
I hate every one of my 17 putters.

R510 TP is the best driver ever made IMO.

I tried many 460cc drivers and still couldn't find a replacement for the good ole R510 TP. And surprisingly I didn't find the 460's any more forgiving than the R510.

I also tried the 983k for a few months and it felt good but I can tell that it wasn't nearly as forgiving as the bigger heads.

I've been a Titleist driver man my whole golfing life. Started out with the 975JVS, then the 983K til the face cracked, and now have the 905S. IMO, the 983K was longer than the 905S, but I was also younger with a balls-out swing :russian_roulette:

I have the 510TP on the way (thanks Matt, aka RACMB's&TP's!) and will be gaming that for a bit this spring, so I'll have a bit more to compare. Never hit anything but Titleist's up til now, but hoping the 510TP lives up to HALF what you have all said about it!!

As you can see, I rock out the 510TP in my bag....I've played the 983K & E, 905T & R...I like my 510TP best out of all, but the 983E is the second best driver I've ever hit....an absolute beast...the K for me was too draw-biased...the 905T was an absolute dud...the 905R was excellent, but too big for me at 460, and while good hits were GREAT, I actually found it LESS forgiving than the K, E, and my current gamer (I know, probably not possible in any way, but I'm just saying how it worked with me and my swing)...Honestly? Grab a 510TP, K, & E online, hit all 3, and whatever you like keep, and sell the rest back on the Bay...if its a 9.5* E, PM me!

Played both. 510 TP was the best of it's time. A classic. Great feel, long, accurate and workable. EVERYTHING a driver should be.

But, and it took quite a while, the newer 460's finally knocked it out of my bag. Specifically the MP 600. Very similar, especially at address, but more forgiving so more consistent for me.

The K was good, not great. As others have said, too many lefts.

Thanks these are all great responses, ive got a 9.5K w speeder and a 8.5TP on the way from the bay, grand total 104.25 with shipping.... Has anyone put a PERSHING in the K? For the money sounds like a great upgrade over the (for titelist speeder)... Or any reshafting experiences would be helpful, since i have heard the bore through design causes some shafts to play a bit different than normal.

I prefer the R510 TP as well as the Tour models that were floating everywhere. It was better suited for my game. The 983K was a hook monster for me but many seemed to have liked this club. Ernie Els set off a firestorm when he used a 983K and the new Pro V1 ball to win at Kapalua. The distances he was getting were something else and many talked about the high ball speeds achieved by the 983K at the time.

Tp R510 with a Prolite +35 was/is a great set up for players after a low launch, lowish spin set up. Still have mine and it always gets a dust off sometime during the season. I aways take it with me to tourney's as a back up would not trust anything else.

I'm hoping that the 9015d i have coming will be the 2009, 510. Here's hoping.
