Wedges have recently replaced my driver obsession, as someone who struggles with their short game due to lack of time for practice, I have relied more upon a wedge's quality rather than my skills to get the ball close. As sand wedges goes, the Scratch is superb, its sole grind and high levels of spin augmented by great feel has saved me a few shots when I am unfortunate enough to land in the beach.

For general around the green play or from 100 yards in, I am loving the Yururi RAW and Vega RAFW08, their raw heads just frames the ball perfectly. Here's a couple of pics of the Yururi's

For a 58* I love my Cleveland 588 DSG RTG. It's an all purpose "around the greens" wedge for me. The DSG grind allows you to open the face and keep the leading edge low. With 10* bounce its still great out of bunkers. And I chip with it as well.

+1 for the DSG RTG. I have the CG12 version in the 60*.. It does everything i ask of it. Plenty of spin, but it does eat golf balls from time to time. I can close it and pick the shot off the turf easy with lots of spin, or lay it way open and pop it up with lots of spin. Goes through the ground like a rototiller.

Too bad Scratch is having trouble delivering right now, I ordered custom wedges in December and still don't have them. Don't know when they are coming. Very disappointing....

love your Yururi's. but that finish looks like it will rust pretty quickly.

Imo, Chikara wedges are the best available. The V1 model is perfect for my needs.

For a lower cost and off the rack, you can not beat the Cally X forged though. The higher lofted T.A. line in particular has one of the best grinds available, mine is a 60 and easily rivals custom or tour models costing twice as much. The grooves and overall feel/look are exeptional.

Look at this beautiful grind on my otr 60, gotta love Cally.

I have four pairs of wedges (53-54 and 58): Mizuno MP-T, Vokey Spin Milled, MacGregor MT Don White's, and PING Tour-W. I'd rate all of them as superb in feel and performance. It amazes me how the cast PING's feel as good as the forged Miz's and Mac's. I rotate them just because I enjoy playing them all. The only ones that play a bit different from the rest are the Vokey's simply because they have a couple of degrees more bounce than the others (good for sloppy wet weather days on dormant bermuda)...

From my experience you can't go wrong with any of them. Personal preference is the biggest decision point.

it's funny i know a pro who plays forged blades and swears by the ping wedges. the only thing in his bag not from his sponsor. i just can't pull the trigger on them however

Jd,

You have overhauled your entire bag seems like ..

This site has turned you into a club ho ...

Admit it or not .

"I know a guy who won masters with cast irons and wedges and a long putter with insert".

LOL, true, this site and also spending a lot of time in Asia this past year and seeing all the JDM stuff. and leaving my set there meant building another one here

I'd say the best deal out there for a forged wedge are Callaway X-Tour vintage finish. Nice head shapes too. They have a nice nutty forged feel. I got the X-Forged raw gun metal thinking it would feel the same and unfortunately it feels like cement.

Im liking what I hear about Chikaras too. At 1st the Production Model's oblique shapes threw me off, but now they're starting to grow on me. I also like their description "... these clubs are one of the first in the world to use a unique forging process which softens the feel of the hit while still delivering all the same power as regular clubs." I like they ackowledge some clubs can be made so soft they end up being dead. I kind of have that concern with Scratch.

I got my Chikara 60 Prototype in the mail today. Bought it w/o ever seeing one in person (lefties like me have to do that all the time.) All I can say is OH MY GOSH! Amazing looking! The sole thay looks somewhat thick in photos is smooth and slight, and the heel and toe grinds that look kind of oblique in photos blend in beautifully. But it doesn't end there, it's also super-model gorgeous from a versatility standpoint ... what makes a wedge appeal to me is when I set it down I get an image of the shot I want to play. And this one satisfies that criteria 100%. Only other wedge I ever set down that was in the same zip code was a Tourstage. I can't wait to take it to the course!

Used my new Chikara LW for the 1st time today on short game range/practise area (including sand and rough) and then for 9 holes. TOTALLY BLOWN AWAY. so solid, so versatile, so smooth ... so everything. In a bag with a lot of competition for "best club" this one's got it (with 2nd place going to the TP Mills putter I got on Ebay for $10 :yahoo:)

There's a lefty pro at my club and he tried it and was equally blown away. He went immediately to the Chikara website to scope it out. His other questions: does it come in other lofts for lefties? (extremely rare as far as I know.) Do they make irons? (no, and I hope they won't because I want them to stay focused on these wonderful wedges!)

he loves its look too as I do. I have a friend that didnt buy one because he thought the pics online looked too thick and angular (I had concerns there too.) Id like to reemphasize nothing could be further from the truth in person. Id recommend if someone gets one to get the Prototype or Production model. The V2's (from online pics) look similar to other OEM wedges Ive seen. I think if you're going with Chikara I'd get the more original/unique design, which I think is superior to the more conventional look.

Also, the clubmaker who made it for me (I bought the head from somewhere else as he doesn't have an account with Chikara) was equally blown away when he saw it. His comments: "whoah, that looks like something that should be in my bag (he's a plus handi, btw.) If I get one and leave it on the counter I'm sure I will have guys come in and order the 60, 56, and 52 on the spot." He'll be contacting Chikara soon Im sure for an account.

One last piece of advice: make sure your clubmaker knows what he's doing when he assembles it. The head is a bit lighter than some other wedges and you need someone to who knows how to use lead in the hosel/bottom of the shaft area to get the swingweight to more convential wedge #'s. This will be more pronounced with the counter-balanced KBS shaft that I use.

A wedge is only as good as the hands swinging it. Bounce is key based on swing. With the right bounce a $9 Maltby wedge will do anything a $300 wedge does, The wedges are better than any person swinging them.

if thats directed toward me, all i can say is i play what i think is best. i don't assume most expensive = best. if i did id have a bag full of honma's and i wouldnt be using a TP Mills putter circa 1970 that I bought on Ebay for $10.

Chikara production wedges built to D5 with KBS 5.5 .

Should be here next week .

Last club of the year ....

:good: :good:

If its not too late id recommend the black oxide finish on the LW. it adds to the appearance and i find it does come in handy reducing glare on sunny days. but it will be great either way, and the black oxide will wear off over time in the hitting area anyway
