Carry/Stand Bag Mechanism Question

Recommended Posts

I'm in the market for a new carry/stand bag, as my current Callaway one is probably 6-7 years old, and some of the stitching is starting to come undone.

My question is this, what bags have the legs deployed by pressing on the base of the bag (ex: Ping Hoofer), as opposed to an "external button" (ex: Ogio Ladies Diva)

I'm also looking for something <5 lbs.

Thanks for any help.

I've studied this exact question over the past few weeks. Here is what I've found. By the way, I currently own a Hoofer 2.

The Hoofer stand mechanism still operates the way it always has. The base of the bag remains planted firmly on the ground and the bag leans forward as the legs deploy. The benefit of this design is that you don't have a clumsy foot protruding from the front bottom part of the bag that can break or get caked with mud, or can sometimes make it difficult to fit the bag on the back of a cart (e.g., Sun Mountain Four 5 and Titleist Premium bag). The drawback to this design is that the clubs get tangled at the bottom of the bag because the bottom of the bag actually collapses when the legs are deployed.

Almost all of the other brands of bags I looked at have feet/levers that stick out from the bottom of the bag to activate the stand mechanism, that is, except one brand.

I think the Callaway stand bags have the best stand mechanism in the industry. Instead of a foot, they all have a collar encircling the outside bottom part of the bag that activates the stand mechanism. When you place the bag down, you simply push the bag forward and the collar remains planted on the ground as the bag tilts forward. Think of it as an inside-out Hoofer. Because the collar is on the outside of the bag as opposed to being a part of it, the bottom of the bag does not collapse when the legs are deployed, which means that the clubs won't get tangled in the bottom. Also, because the collar is so sturdy, the bag can actually stand on its own, straight up, without deploying the legs on flat surfaces.

You should look at the current Warbird X and last year's basic version of the same bag, the Warbird Hot. I'd stay away from the Warbird XTT Xtra Lite because the stand mechanism on that bag is similar to the Hoofer (the bottom of the bag collapses when you deploy the legs).

The only downside to these bags is that the straps are not the greatest. Hope this helps.

I too have studied this over the past few months and will agree with the 2nd poster that Callaway is the best as far as their mechanism is concerned. Ping has the 2nd best, then I will say Ogio, then Nike.

My biggest complaint with the stand bag has always been the occasional cart ride when the bag does not fit right in the cart due to the mechanism at the bottom. I currently have a Titleist Premium bag and while it's great overall, the stand mechanism makes the bag sit sideways in the cart limiting me to certain pockets for easy access.

Like the 2nd poster said, the only issue with the Callaway bags are the straps. Just not comfortable.

My perfect bag would be as follows:

Titleist Premium Bag that weighs 5lbs with the Callaway XTT system for leg deployment. If this existed, it could not get any better.

Completely agree. The Titleist/Sun Mountain backpack style double straps are the most comfortable straps out there. Combine those straps with the XTT stand mechanism in a bag that's less than 5 pounds and you've got the perfect bag.

FYI, by the way, at one time Callaway did make a bag that had the backpack style straps -- it was called the CX. Unfortunately, it was made before the XTT stand mechanism innovation, so it's lacking in that department. Here is an example on ebay right now:

I looked at all of the above in the last week. The callaway bags have an IZZO strap system on them, and the best thing I can recommend is to go check them out. I didn't find the straps to be as much as a problem for me as it has been for others. I even was really specifically looking for the buckle issue that has been mentioned and it simply wasn't a problem to me. THe bag is light enough to carry has a good divider system and would be very good in a cart as well.

One thing I noticed about that pesky buckle is I wondered if the strap could be redirected through the handle which would pull the strap away from the back a little more and the buckle wouldn't be an issue at all.

I decided today that I am going with the Warbird X.

That's a great suggestion. I hadn't thought of it. You'd have to try it out, though, because I wonder if the bag would lay kind of funny with the buckle redirected around the back and through the handle. I also noticed that there was an alternate attachment point for the buckle that's an inch or two higher on the bag. I wonder if that would make a difference.
