Drives are Leaking Right, All of them

Weak grip should equal Snap hooks....

Anyways, if you care to hear what I think..

Take some practice swings, if your right handed: Stand on your right foot, left foot like an inch or two off the ground. , on your right foot, get on your heel, and then take it back, at the top of the swing plant your left foot, as you start down LEFT HEEL LEFT HEEL!!!!! and Turn those hips.

You may be gripping the handle in the palm of the hand and engaging your 1st finger and thumb, instead of in the fingers using your middle 2 fingers for pressure.

When you "go after it" with the driver, you are allowing your head to get ahead of the ball. Stay behind it.

You are using the same swing with driver and iron. Tee the driver up a little and push it forward in your stance, sweeping with a positive angle of attack.

Oh my God this is getting frustrating. I shot 79 on Saturday. I could have shot 3-4 over if I can just get my damn driver to work. I play a few long par 4s so Driver is almost a must to have a reasonable approach shot.

More time at the range I guess.

Check out Butch harmon's tip this month for leaking drives out to the right on Golf Digest.com http://www.golfdigest.com/instruction/2009/05/harmon. I think this is a really great drill. Also i have found that 460 cc head drivers are harder to turn over. Maybe try a smaller headed driver and see if its easier to hit you normal draw with.

fixed????????

Took a lesson tonight and the lightbulb went one.

I was lifting my left heel with my driver only causing me to take an outside path! So obviously but so hard to figure out myself.

Now if only I can raise my ball flight.

Coulda been fixed two weeks ago if you'd only taken my advice on May 1 and get a lesson... :ok: :beruo:

After a LONGGGGGGG trackman session heres the fitters solution:

Club is traveling a bit on the outside (7-8 deg) causing me to cut across the ball.

Another and more sever problem, I'm hitting down on the ball instead of on the upswing causing me to deloft and hit those ugly low cuts that roll forever but only carry 210 yards.

He also said at my SS 107 I'm getting cheated on yards due to the horrible path.

His solution:

1. Try to adjust the spine angle to the right a bit to hit on the upswing.

2. Work my hands a bit faster to get that club turned over.

It's soooooooo hard to stop coming on the outside. Anyone have any tips / drills to help.

I was lifting my left foot a bit throwing off my timing.

When I concentrate on turning the big stick over, I generally get more loft and a slight draw but It's so hard for me to do consistantly (My linebacker frame doesn't help either).

Oh well, I guess the solution is to practice. For those who say take lessons, yes they help but I think It's important once you know what's wrong to practice and get it fixed yourself.

another problem is my balance is off. I'm falling back a bit.

Your front foot is probably spinning out making everything go right.

That is part of the problem. I've fixed that.

  • 4 weeks later...

I am in your boat. I hit draw irons and woods. Driver is a big wipe lately. My scores are typically high 70's. I'm creeping up on low 80's because of this slice/fade. Total drag.

I am like you in that I have been told I can sometimes take it away a bit outside but I've been working on that. I do swing with my body and have a tough time getting my hands through. THIS is the main problem but if I try to force the club head to get to the ball I feel like I am throwing my hands at the ball I am casting and I hate that move. I want to maintain lag with the driver but I think that is keeping my face open at impact. GRRRRR

Keep us posted. I'm hitting the range tomorrow to work on it some more.

I even draw my 3 wood off the deck...frustrating..

Similar to what someone else said, I have 2 identical v1 raptures and I draw the stock TFC shaft but I have a BB (63gram) that I bought off eBay and installed....and I can't turn that damn thing over. Drives me nuts.

this thread really hits home for me...

iron play is pretty standard for me, never really hit any horrible shots, other than the few chunks i hit every round... :(

but the driver is just useless to me... been just hitting 150 yard shots at the range trying to get them to hook, and even that's been a chore for me... i don't get it... i was seriously thinking about quiting the game for awhile due to this...

Here's a simple trick for you to try that will normally influence both your swing path and your "release":

Take your normal setup, lined up on a target. Before you swing, without changing anything else, roll the clubface slightly open. Take your normal swing.

Visually, the open face points you at the inside quarter of the ball. Rolling it open adds a little tension to your left forearm, and your eyes looking at the open face will make you feel like you "need" to close the clubface through impact to get back to square.

You will probably hit a straight pull slightly left of target on your first swing, but the fade will be gone and you can play with it from there.

Let me know how it works for you. It's my on course cure when I start getting stuck.

Have the same problem and it due to over swinging for me. I finally figured it out my mental block. I know I hit my certain wedge 100 yds, my 8 iron is my 150 yd club. But when I get my driver in my hands its my "well it could by my 240 club or let see if I can get it to 270".

It's weird, my irons have a ceiling distance. I would never hit my 8 iron 170 or even TRY. So why do we swing our driver for that extra 20 yards?

Thats my thought and something I have been struggling with.

I think this guy got it..

I'm gunna start trying this and see how I improve.

There isn't enough room in the little score box on the card to write " I hit a massive drive..." now is there?

It isn't that anyone is trying to kill it, I think the point here is that it's more difficult to get the face closed on the driver due to it's length.

What I am saying is. You don't have to hit a driver to make par or even birdie. Take the 3 wood. Put it in the fairway. Play from there.

Heck, none of us even need to go to the golf course. I could just stay home and read a book, but where is the fun in that?

I find that when I am hitting my driver well it's the most enjoyable part of the game. About 2x per year I get wild off the tee for a period of time.

But I hear what you are saying...

OP here! Been about a month since I posted this.

I'm still having a hard time. When I really try to turn it over, I hook it. Otherwise, same story.

The Driver I'm playing doesn't help. I was hitting my 909D2 so well then went with the Rapture V2 because the distance was a bit more. The longer shaft is really hard to turn over.

I'm going back to the 909D2 on Monday and well see what happens. I've tried a bunch of bandaids that have helped (grips, stance, ...) but I want it fixed.

Problem is, I don't have enough Range time. Whenever I get free time, I'm playing.

So this week (After my normal sunday morn game), I'm going to the Range every night with the Driver to practice. My wedge play has been amazing.

I can tell from the bottom of the Driver that I'm cutting across the ball. I KNOW what I have to do. My first move on the downswing (I've been told in the lesson I took and checked on film) is out forcing an outside in swing, hence cutting the ball.

I'm getting better at "putting my hands in my pocket, dropping my hands to the inside" but Still not perfect.

Oh well, golfs a funny game. 1 thing works the other doesn't. But when I put it all together, look out.

Don't get me wrong. Hitting a long straight drive is amazing. But I have more fun when Im making birdies and pars than having a bad drive and having to scramble...

Have you tried the "swinging out to right field" tip? If the leaking off to the right isn't a huge slice then just play it. Most pros play the fade with their drivers...

ya i guess. I can play but I don't want to. Once in a while, I lose one a fairway over!

You and I should play together. We'll always be able to keep our conversations going as we walk to the right side of the fairway. Are you playing the BB in your Rapture because I'm hearing a lot of guys in forums say that they can't turn that shaft over. ME EITHER. Weird because my swing speed is 104'ish and I can hit my buddies UST V2 X-stiff shaft straight as a bone. Conversely I can hit my wife's L flex driver straight as well.

Put this BB 63g Stiff in a PING head and my ball is wiping right!

Using a slightly stronger grip and now I'm barely holding the club with my right hand, very very light. My drives today were much straighter (and not surprisingly shot my best score of the year). But now they are so fricken low. I'm guessing like 7-8 deg launch. No problem on most holes and the ball runs forever but If I have to carry, I'm in trouble.

Swing was quickly analyzed by my pro and he said I Have a few problems. Cutting across the ball a bit and hitting down on it. I'm compressing the ball, perfect for my irons but horrible for the driver. I'm having such a hard time "hitting up" on the ball.

Based on your new fix, just swing to right field so you down cut across and compress.

I like what you've done with your right hand. Let it go for a ride. You should get your hands out of it, anyway. Hands are death.

Hands are death indeed!

Tiger just hit his first tee shot 50 yards to the left. I'm in good company
