Playing Bethpage Green this Sunday, question for the hardcore golfers....

The forecast calls for thunderstorms Saturday night and rain on Sunday. Tee time is 1:56pm. Weather.com has been known to be wrong on many occassions.

 

What do you guys think? Play on? or take a rain check?

 

I mean, don't golf courses have really good drainage systems and such?

 

I am still leaning towards playing as I haven't played in over a month!!!

weather.com is almost always wrong when it comes to rain forecasts. plus, Bethpage has excellent drainage. and i am holding firm that the forecast for this weekend is hit or miss. that's why it's 50-60% and not 90-100%, because they dont know for sure. it could miss completely. happens all the time. more often than not, in fact.

 

you wont get a rain check, by the way, unless you already paid. i say, get out there and do it.

I played the Blue Course their a couple of weeks ago...it rained the entire day, complete downpour for some of it. Anyway, the course held up, no standing water other than on a couple of the cart paths. Don't trust weather.com or you will never play. On that same line of thinking I read an article a few weeks ago that discussed what a weather forecast is and is not and how many people don't actually understand what one is and how it works. In a nutshell the meteorologists ascertain what the atomospheric conditions for the day will be and based on past days with similar conditions make an assumption as to the outcome of the weather. FOr instance if it says their is a 30% chance of rain tomorrow, what it is actually saying is that 30% of the time when the atmospheric conditions are what they will be tomorrow (or they think it will be) it will rain. 70% of the time it won't. Think about it that way and enjoy your round tomorrow.

P.S. Please don't yell at me if it rains I am not a weather forecaster and can in no way predict the weather.

As for rain check, If I am checked in (1 hour before) and pay, I get a rain check right? What if you start playing, possible to get a rain check? i.e. if you play less than x amounts of holes, you get rain check?

 

I've been calling the tee time line all day trying to get an idea if others were cancelling since it is a 48 hour policy. All I hear is:

 

"There are NO available tee times!!!" LOL. sickos.

No matter what weather.com says, it always rains at Bethpage. Maybe it's just me, but every time I'm there I get soaked. Lucky for you, I wont be there that day so you should be fine.

 

Use Accuweather - they're usually more spot on.

i believe once you tee off you get half a rain check provided you did not play more than 6 holes. never happened to me so im not positive.

 

you have to cancel by tonight at midnight (for sunday) to avoid penalty.

That's good to know. I called and they told me that you had to cancel 48 hours in advance to avoid penalty. I just assumed it was 48 hours before your tee time. Good to know that I have until midnight.

Check www.wunderground.com as others have said, weather.com isn't worth checking.

Here is what the reservation said:

 

Green course: hole 1 & 18 play as Par 3.

Red course: hole 1 & 18 play as Par 3. hole 5 play as Par 4.

Blue course: hole 1 & 10 play as Par 3.

Yellow course: hole 10 play as Par 3.

so true. if there's even the smallest chance you may get a 5 minute drizzle in one square mile of an entire tri-state area, they throw up rain clouds and 50%. i would say 4 out of every 5 times they cast a day like that, i wind up playing with relatively few problems whatsoever.

honestly, the only thing good about weather.com is the radar. like, right now it shows mr. storm in Missouri or whatever. well, that's your sunday right there. will it be light rain or heavy rain? will it hit or will it miss? will it miss north or south? you don't really know until the day-of.

 

yesterday was a perfect example. i'm sitting on my balcony and the sun is shining. yet weather.com has Brooklyn as clouds and rain, though there was hardly a real drop all day. i always ignore the percentages and the icons and just stick to radar watching.

buy some footjoy rain gloves. they come in pairs. they saved me when i played in a downpour last month.

ok, so I was able to tee off earlier at 1:32pm.

 

1st hole was a converted Par 3. If any of you are familiar with the 1st hole at Bethpage, you stand on top with the fairway below (same as Black 1st hole). All I saw were tents on platforms. So you had to drive down literally to the green to tee off. 1st hole is literally like 40 yds, teeing off uncut grass. Still managed a bogey. :D

 

Weather was ok, kinda cold but no rain.

 

Round was 5 hours, not bad considering we had a foursome in front getting wasted the entire time. Literally, by the 11th hole, they were all hitting worm burners off the tee.

P.S. I wasn't at Bethpage this weekend but one of the guys in my threesome hit himself in the leg with his drive on the third hole. The look on his face was priceless.

Weather forecast are only accurate 2-3 days out. So give it a few days and check again.
