I Need Help Getting Swingweight Back!!!

I recently got my '08 Cobra Speed LD F driver re-shafted with a GD YSQ Stiff and cut down to 44.5". The club builder at my local pro shop told me that the 1/2" difference shouldn't affect my SW too much to the point that I would feel it. What do you know he is wrong. The club feels like air and I can't feel the club swinging on plane anymore. It's causing a horrible hook every time.

The stock GD YS shaft came in at 62g, 45", Cobra/Golf Pride grip, and a D3 swingweight if I remember Cobra's spec's correctly. The new YSQ shaft is running a bit heavier at 65g before trimming, 44.5", Lamkin Crossline grip, and now a D0 swingweight. The 3 swingweight points are making a HUGE difference. It's not my swing, I have a pretty consistent swing through all my clubs and a consistent dispersion pattern.

I've gone the lead tape route but find it annoying and ugly to look at. My question is if I substitute a lighter weight grip say by 6g, will this allow the head to be heavier to get back to a D3 swingweight? Any other thoughts of getting the weight back to the clubhead would be appreciated. I've heard of tungsten powder but unfortunately the Speed LD head is not a bore through which wouldn't allow easy modification.

A 6g change at the butt end will only bring it up to around D1! You could tip weight the shaft? That is the only solution I can think of. A 4g tip weight should do the trick! Golfsmith sells a 5g tip weight that should do the trick nicely!!5g graphite tip weight!!!

Does your driver have the black dot on the sole like this one? If so, you can drill out the plug, add melt to get your desired swingweight, and seal it up with a bore through tip plug.

Thanks for the replies both options sound interesting but not within my means of doing my own club work. I'll ask around with my buddies if they can do any of the head weighting options. I'm bummed to hear the grip only changes the SW by 1 scale.

I am not sure it will do even a whole SW point. I would recommend that you take it back to the guy & have him re-swingweight the driver!!!

You can add 6 grams fo weight to head or substitute a grip that is 15 grams lighter.

 

In increasing the head weight: disassemble the shaft and hosel and add a "tip weight"OR remove the grip and pour lead powder down the shaft and seal with cork OR add lead tape to backside of head.

 

Check out the new Taylormade Arrow grips. They have one that is 43 grams.

 

Personally, I would add the tape at this point just to try and see if any of the other methods are really worth it. After all, 6 grams is equilivant to 6 one dollar bills. You really might enjoy the D-0 later in the round.

Sounds like the shaft is actually too stiff - not that the swingweight is not heavy enough. Making changes in the weight at the butt will do nothing interesting.

 

Add lead tape to the head until you get the feel you are looking for. If you still need to have the head weighted to avoid lead tape on the head for some reason, have it done only AFTER you have solved your feel problem.

 

Most PGA Pros play with lead tape on most of their clubs. Don't fear lead tape :)

1/2" of shaft = 3 swingweights

Every 4 grams changed in a grip = 1 swingweight

4 wraps of tape = -1 swingweight

 

Quick fix would be a New Decade Dual Durometer. That'll add 1-2 swingweights depending on what grip you have now. So long as you don't build it up with too much tape.
