Washing Grips

I've been using Winn for so long I forgot
Obviously, you can't wash Winn grips. I've been using Winn for so long, first the Harmony then the G8, I forgot grip washing protocol.

I'm thinking about moving back to GP grips, specifically the new BC cord or a the venerable Tour Velvet or the Decade. In any event, I'm someone with sweaty hands, lived in a hot climate and I practice a lot. Would it be detrimental to my grips if I washed them with Dawn or even simple green after every round?

I like the feel of the beforementioned grips, but I like the feel when they are NEW. Is washing after every round going to help?

Thanks.

I wash my Lamkin's after almost every round. Dawn and warm water with a brush work well. Makes the grips feel like new.

I use Dial Complete Foaming hand wash on my new decade mcc with an old brass bristle clubhead brush.

I bought some used mizuno mp-30s and the mcc grips were disgusting. I figured that I was going to have to replace them but I decided to just give them a quick wash and scrub down. The grips were literally dripping with brown soapy water. Disgusting. But they're in great shape and I'll be using them for the rest of the year.

I wash them after every session, every round in the late spring, summer, early fall with Clean and Tacky with a tube of nylon bristles.

I sweat and must use a glove during these times when it's hot. At other times during the year, a glove is not necessary. At 90+ deg, I need the glove.

I picked up some Gripmasters during a 3:2 special -- putting those on when I change grips -- to see how they stand up to the sweat.

Thanks for all the replies.

So, is washability the definitive reason to switch back to GP Cord?

The thing that bothers me most about Winns is that I cannot wash the Winns at all. They just wear out or get so dirty that they lose the "new" feeling right away.

I really like the Winn G8s but they do appear to wear out pretty fast since I practice quite a bit. All I know is that my hands are pretty dirty after a round of golf too. After a while, they really do feel dirty, like a old steering wheel on a very old old car.

It's pretty warm where I live in the summer so a freshly washed GP grip will dry completely very fast. I sure hope the BC grip will be available in a traditional black and not just the Red or Blue. This cord grip doesn't seem as harsh as the traditional Velvet Cord Tour, although it is listed as Firm.

Thanks.

I have Winn Grips and here in the UK I just carry a tub of the 'Clean Strike' wipes with me in my bag. These do a great job on Winn Grips, cleans them up well and removes any grease on them. I usually use a wipe to clean a couple of grips then do the heads, then I toss the wipe and get another and repeat till the set is complete.

Don't know if you have them in the US or not, but they are quite good. You can use them on your shoes and bags as well to get dirt and muck off.

Just use a damp washcloth on the Winn grips. It will take off the surface dirt and grease. Give them a day to dry, as they tend to absorb a little moisture.

Just out of curiosity, why would you think you cannot wash Winn grips?

Supposedly, the lasting will come loose.

With Winn Grips, I dampen a cloth with rubbing alcohol and water (don't soak it), per Winn's instructions, and just clean the grip with the damp rag; then dry it off with a clean and dry towel.

Sorry, I just assumed I couldn't wash the Winns at least with the same vigor as I would with a Tour Velvet, et al.

I'll try the damp towel with water and rubbing alcohol.

Anyone else know about "Clean Strike"?

To be able to clean Winns and perhaps allow me to get bit more life out of them would be great. I like the feel of the G8 but I dont' appreciate not being able to 'restore' them once in awhile.

Thanks again.

I think Clean Strike have been taken over by Yes! Golf. Certainly in the US you should be able to get the tubs of wipes through them as they are listed on the Yes! website.

In the UK they are quite common in all the golf centres like American Golf, Direct Golf etc plus many of accessory companies such as Masters and Brand Fusion supply them to Courses. I always get two tubs off the Masters Rep each time he comes calling.

Winn grips don't hold up in all weather conditions, they become slick and soft in hands. This is probobly why not many pros use these grips, only on putters. Also, they are expensive and don't last long. Switch to lamkin or golf pride. Buy and put them on yourself. Good luck!!!

I've actually switched to Winn for the 1st time this year after being a longtime Golf Pride user and having briefly tried Lamkins. I actually found the Golf Prides and Lamkins wore a lot quicker for me, and always tended to rough up badly in certain places which then destroyed my gloves and hands. I've also found within the last 12 months or so the Golf Pride Grips seems to be a different rubber compound now and seem to wear a lot quicker. Even reps have commented on that when they've been round.

The Winns I find are the softest tackyist grips yet and even in the wet weather here in the UK I can still grip them firmly because of how soft they are.

I play the Winn V17 grips, and have had no problems in wet conditions. They are soft from the get go, and no weather conditions have ever made them any softer. For comparison, I have used Golf Pride tour velvets and the Titliest cord grips, and they are far more slick when wet. When has it mattered what pro's use? If a grip fits your hand, and feels comfortable when you grip it, use it. If it is a $.99 el segundo walmart grip or a $16 Iomic grip, or anything between, it is a personal choice. I have yet to find a Lamkin or Golf Pride grip that I think feels good in my hands, which is why I use Winn grips.

Well, having checked out what's on the market with regards to grips after having used Winn Harmony then G8 V17 for quite some time, I didn't find much to my liking.

In summary, in Golf Pride, I like the plain old Tour Velvet. But, I still like the V17 G8 which has been discontinued.

But, most importantly, I washed my current V17 G8 grips with simple green, water and a good brush, then rinsed them off thoroughly under water and let them dry in the hot sun for an hour. Viola, completely dry and clean!

So, I guess you really can wash the V17s.
