Studio Select 33" users: Isn't the stock 360g too heavy?

ijha

Recommended Posts

I'm worried
I ordered Studio Select 2.7 33" a couple of days ago and I found out that the stock head weight is 360g. I am kind of worried since I've never used 360g head before. All my 33" putters have 350g. So, I wonder how you feel about your putters in terms of distance control or feel.

Any feedback is appreciated.

p.s. I know I can change the weight plugs but I thought that I should ask you guys first.

It kinda depends on which grip you use on your current 350G putter.

Scotty went with a heavier cord grip on the Studio Select to give the same "head feel" as his normal standard length/headweight combos (eg: 33"/350G with a Studio Design grip). Basically, the extra headweight and grip weight cancel each other out.

No he didn't. He put a 70 gram Baby T grip on the Circa series that has a 330 gram headweight so that blows that theory.

BTW - the red cord grip is 67 grams.

Cameron said he went with the heavier weight because that's the feedback he was getting on tour.

im debating on whether i want to go witha 34"/350g and cut it down 1" or just go with a 33"/360g as well. can anyone tell me what effects a heavier head has as opposed to a lighter head (in this case 10grams)? is it mostly a just a personal preference for feel? im leaning towards just getting the 33"/360g and assuming that the extra 10grams in weight will be hardly even noticeable.

Wow, you got me!!! You are right, Scotty went to heavier headweights because of the feedback he received from Tour players. But if you spent anytime reading about the Studio Select line on TCC and Garage Talk you would find my answer/explanation is valid.

i have a 33" newport 2.7 with scotty's custom shop mid-size grip with the 360g headweight, and personally i like it better than the 340g and 350g headweight putters. I just feel a like i have a little more control on my backswing. the difference though is hardly noticeable. if you do want to change headweights tho, its a pretty significant cost given what you're really paying for (the weights - i dont think you get to keep your old ones - and screwing them in and out). next time, it might be worthwhile to do a little more research and hit your friends' putters to test out the feel.

I have a 33" fastback with the 360 grams and I first I liked it but recently have switched to an anser with 345 grams. I like that weight better.

My 33" fastback may be going to the BST soon, although it is a great putter.

A cheaper alternative is to change the weight to aftermarket.. ebay has some of those milled non-OEM weights.

Your 33"/360g putter will prolly swingweight to D0 or less. Most players have thier putters at D1 or D2. Go lighter and it will be mid C's.

Try it out...you will love it or hate it.

If you normally play a 33" 350, the putter will probably feel a little heavy to you. Ihave a 33/360 and I like the weight. It seems to keep the backswing more steady and help keep it straighter when I need to hit a long one hard. That said, if you decide you don't like it, I suspect that you will find an unlimited amount of people willing to trade you for your 20g weights. The "Heavy" option is pretty popular.

Just wondering, is it possible to change the weights yourself? Can you remove the weights or do you have to send it to Scotty?

Yes, you can change the weights. There is a guy on ebay who makes a wrench and weights for it. His newest wrench version is pretty nice. He's pretty proud of them (decent $$$) but it's cheaper then sending the putter off...

You can also get them out with a pair of pliers if you're willing to risk scratching teh snot out of the weights (voice of experience).

Thanks for the info!

The reason why I'm asking is that my weights are completely off on my Newport 2....don't know what happened but I think while in transport somehow my putter got all screwed....the putter head is bended (it's slightly closed now and has more loft while the shaft seems to remain straight I noticed that the offset is not straight anymore) and the weights are not neatly in position anymore but are sort of angled and out of position. I don't know when and how it happend but when I played last time I realized that the putter was basically screwed.

Don't know whether this can be repaired and whether it is worthwhile to have it repaired instead of buying a new one....

I had a Newport 33" @ 370 grams and it felt sweet. Loved the weight and had no issues with distance control. Great putters and you'll enjoy it.

I've been gaming the 33" 360g Newport 2 since it first came out. I like heavier putters, and when I tried this one in the shop, I felt like it was made for me. The extra weight makes it feel quite a bit more solid. The extra weight also lets me usually a slightly shorter stroke that works better for me, and has helped keep me from decelerating the putter on short putts, as well.
