Too Many Choices - Need your help
OK, since being directed to this site from a friend I have taken ALL OTR putters off of my list for my next choice.
I started with Bettinardi, Byron Morgan, TP Mills, Slighter Golf, Sunset Beach, C&L, Machine, Piretti, and Palombi.

First off from this original group am I missing anyone?

If not or if I am I can add them back in.

First off I am looking for either Anser or Anser 2 similaritites. However I want a Hand made hosel because I have always been partial to the toe hang on the Ping Zing style, but not the shape of the head. So I want a hosel something like that or the Newport 1.5 hosel type. I cannot stand really long hosels and have always putted with an anser or anser 2 style.

So I am thinking this has narrowed my choices down to Byron, TP, Slighter, Sunset Beach, and Machine. Am I wrong do any of the others make a handmade hosel or have a shorter stock hosel similar to what I am looking for? I want to make sure I have all the choices narrowed down, but I also am not looking to break the bank. I have three kids and the economy is not great for me right now, she who must be obeyed has put a limit on my spending, but I have a bit in my paypal to hopefully make up the rest.

Thanks

Look at Scratch golf putters theyre new in the field of putters but can get as custom as you can get, and I have a few and they feel great too and the craftsmanship is some of the best I've seen.

Theyre really nice putters so I would contact Ari, and talk to him about options you might be able to get exactly what your looking for. And I mean exactly.

If your looking for a neck similar to the newport 1.5 dont take C&L off your list as they have thier flowneck. See my witb pics for a good look at it. Sorry on the mobile so i cant post pics. Its a fantastic putter and even better service. Byron has one as well but goes by the term rincon neck in either the 006 or 007 heads

Ok, based on pricing I have seen and a few PM's from customers giving me an idea of what I am looking at I think I have narrowed it down. 400+ is more than I want to spend on a putter right now and was hoping to keep it down around 300 + / -

I have two on my list now and I am waiting to hear back from some people on final pricing.

Thanks guys for all of your help.

I don't have personal experience with it but you might look at the Edel putter as well. There are shops around the country that do personal fitting and it has a variety of heads and hosels as well. They seem to be made pretty well.

I have owned a couple of TP Mills (softtail and their anser/newport version) and they are very nice putters. I have also owned Bettinardi's bb8 (anser 2/newport 2) and Byron Morgan 007 (anser/newport). All are well made but you may also look at which holds their value the best. I know when I sold my Morgan and Mills I lost $100 or so over what I purchased them for new and it took sometime. Granted, these weren't custom but those may loose more than the otr versions since they would target a smaller audience.

The Machine putters are very nicely made and are kind of modular in their construction. They can do some custom work like softening the 'bumpers' on the back, sightlines, dots, etc. Many like their face milling. They are adjustable due to the various modular components (flange, weights, hosel, etc.). They have a fitting studio here in the Dallas, Texas area so have seen many of their versions and talked with their staff.

Bettinardi's are nice but I feel they are over priced for their Studio B versions.

No experience with C&L, Slighter, Sunset (although you can't go wrong with LaMont). Some love the Gold putters from Japan but they are pricey like the Bettinardi's Studo B models.

Thanks for all the info. I had narrowed it down to four. Byron, C&L, SSB, and Machine. In the end Machine was out because of pricing and I am not a big fan of modular hosels. I love the ability to change weight but I am far enough along in my fitting and knowing what I need I do not need to pay for the adjustability. C&L's Flowneck was just longer than what I wanted. I want a short neck ala the Newport 1.5, but want the hosel moved forward a bit to get my desired toe hang, and it does not appear C&L has the ability to make custom necks.

Byron is a bit more than I want to spend, at 400+ for a rincon based on posts I have seen on other sites, but you cannot say he does not know what he is doing as he is very well respected and he has two heads that I really like the look of. In the end it is going to come down to price. I have a buddy that has a SSB Southport and Ocean Isle and the feel was incredible and like you said with Lamont doing the finish work you cannot go wrong. In the end between pricing and and being able to get the polymer on the carbon head(I hate stainless and hate oiling a putter or having to have a carbon constantly refinished-Black Oxide) and I am not a fan of Nickel coatings and the like.

I am probably gonna end up with the SSB, it mainly came down to price with the SSB right around 300 customized with weight, toe hang, loft, lie, and stampings. I know with all customs you can lose some value, but I would not be ordering it custom if I did not know what I want, I plan on having this putter for a long time.

Thanks for all of the info guys, and as the economy gets better I would like to try and add a Byron, Mills, and a Slighter to my collection as well, just got to unload some of these Camerons that I have suddenly lost my taste for.

Jason,

Thanks for considering our putters in your quest. Chris has been out in the field training the next crop of heros, so may have not seen this thread in time to respond.

In any event, we do have models in the $300 price range, and also offer a TIG welded neck if you want a welded construction. Our modular, morticed joint milled hosel with redundant mechanical screw joint is extremely solid, durable, maintenance free, etc. but we do also offer the TIG welding as an option, for those who want it. We can also make the hosel any length, bend, offset, toe hang and lie you want. So, keep us in mind if you want the Ultimate! :)

Please let me know if you have any questions whatsoever, or would like to see any photos.

Thanks again,

-Dave

Dave,

can you pm me an idea of what I am looking at price wise with a short santa fe style neck(like on the newport 2.5) welded with a 5:00 toe hang, weighing 343 grams and in carbon steel and what kind of finishing options you offer. I really like carbon, and have yet to play a stainless steel putter that I like(the callaway Tour ix balls are hard) and anser, anser 2 or scottsdale style head.

Like I said price is a big consideration for me with the economy.

Thanks,
