double shift
At the request of someone who regularly post here I decided to try and be able to double shift to the elbow plane (difficult for me to do) and be able to single shift down the turned shoulder plane interchangeably. After working on it for 2 days this is what I got so far. Just wanted to know what you guys think. This is way harder than it sounded when I first started trying it. Entirely different patter and releasing the club is totally different. Be gentle, still a work in progress.

Very, very difficult to do interchangeably but you look to be doing a pretty good job.

Why not give us a list of what you changed to achieve the different results? (looks like a lot to me)

haha it was a lot and those were only 4 swings apart from each other.

For the double shift hands higher at setup, sweet spot a little more under plane at P4, left arm more in at P6 (right forearm much more on plane), exit path lower and left for starters.

What did you do to get the s/spot more underplane and did you change hip action/motion to get the left arm more in?

More forearm rotation to get sweetspot slightly under plane and left arm more in was hands controlled rather than pivot. Hands worked more down and under my left shoulder at P6 rather than shifting out.

That is very cool stuff and very impressive. Well done. I can't get to the elbow plane if my life depended on it. I think you said in your last post that you are consciously using your hands to work down and under to get underplane...

I saw Mahan last weekend in DC and your double shifter looks very similar to his swing. At the time, I mentioned to my brother, a pro like yourself, that it looks like Mahan does conciously drop or pull his hands into that elbow plane position before deliver before rotating from delivery into impact. It almost looks like there are two downswing movements, the plane drop, then the rotation (obviously they are merged but it is pretty easy to see, even with a naked eye).

Am I correct in this assessment? Again, very cool stuff.

I just know where my hands need to be at impact and I direct them there. So yes in the double shift they do work more down and less out so my hands are more in and closer to my body at impact.

A very good try and the video, ITeach. You've just proved that the shift of planes does not belong to one's DNA (as most TGM teachers wrongly assume). One remark from the theory of biokinetics, if I may - if you want to fully benefit from the elbow plane (especially early elbow plane), you need to forget the hands controlled pivot idea. The EEP is so beautifully effective for a good ballstriking because it requires engaging the body turn sequentially from the ground up and subdue very early the distal limbs motion to the main body motion. It will let you also achieve a better connection between the main body andf your rear humerus and elbow joint (a'la Hogan or Snead). Your rear arm wander too much to the front of the body which is directly linked to your shoulders/hips being too less open at impact.

Cheers

I like the double shift better... better pivot and cp release (even if work in progress)... you need to get on the inside part of the circle a little earlier in the downswing and you'll have it licked, with a better cp release...

probably more check points to think about right now, but the overall action looks better. Flight???

No clue as I hit range balls maybe once or twice a year. I'll play with it a little this weekend if I go play and let you know.

Clear to me that you have much more power with the single shift, much more freedom in transition with your shoulders, which is what real elbow planars do ( not some convoluted trying to get on to elbow plane , not referring to you iteach, where the shift down is too early and by impact just dont cut the mustard). So imop more shift out with some added float load ( from pivot motion/wrists), shaft will lay off ( oops broke a cardinal rule of tgm), Why , send it Down as fast as you want, left side out of play

I'm going to play using the single shift for sure. I just am trying this as a challenge to myself and because not many people can go back and forth. Doc wants me to be able to do both and posed the challenge so I figured I'd try. Pretty good for 2 days. Double shift was done at only about 60% speed for now.

I'm trying to understand the double vs single shift aspect of the swing and just wanted some clarification. For the single - your club moves from the hand plane up to shoulder plane and then the club swings down that line to the ball? For double - the club goes from hands to shoulder to elbow plane? Is this correct? Also, dont most pros use a double shift. I can't seem to find too many videos of pros swinging down their shoulder plane. Most drop below it to the elbow plane.

Double shift is normally elbow to TSP back to elbow. With a wedge I'm hands to TSP to hands or thats what I try to do. Most do double shift but htere are guys like Brian Gay and David Toms who come down the TSP.

I have video of Gay and Toms DTL and both of them are below the TSP line and above their original address position - hand plane. Am i not understanding something correctly?

Gay and Toms should be on the TSP assuming the camera angle is correct. Draw the line from the inside edge of the ball up through the backside bottom edge of the right armpit. With a wedge the stick never hits me, or if it does it's very late in the swing. Driver and long irons would certainly hit me right around with the club is waist high

in the video you posted Gay is actually slightly above the TSP if anything.

I love the look of the swing on the left in the original videos. I also like that wedge with the stick coming out of the grip swing. Is that similiar to Dana's plane line drill?

I really like what I'm seeing out of the ST guys, but am afraid to shift to it from a more rotary motion as it's hard to find a local teacher who can teach the pattern.

Similar just different planes. THe double shift would be like Dana's drill but the single shift swing would be much steeper than the drill Dana uses.
