Skycaddie - Change Owner?

I own a used skycaddie - it has the name of the previous owner flashing up on the screen and I can download courses to it without needing to enter any username or password.

 

I assume the seller has some time left on his plan, which I assume is fair to use?

 

I also assume this means I can't change the name & registration to mine, unless I create an account as a new skycaddie user?

If you have the userid & password to the account you should be able to follow the instructions to sell/transfer the unit on the skycaddie webpage. It basically erases off all the account info and courses on it and allows you to put a new owner and new membership plan on it. That is what I had to do to before selling my old SG2 unit.
If you don't have the account id & password you won't be able to change the ownership name or add courses until it is registered to you.

Thanks but you misunderstand - I am the new owner.

Obviously the old owner hasn't done this, so I can download courses (no need to login or anything)

If I register as a new user will it wipe the courses I have downloaded?

If you or the old owner do the sell/transfer option from the skycaddie webpage it will wipe the unit clean of the old owners name & courses. You can then register a new name but you will have to re-add courses. I think that is skycaddies way of making sure they receive money for the new memberships on the used skycaddie market.

Yeah I thought as much - understandable, but effectively charging twice for the same thing (this unit has 11 months let of sellers plan remaining).

If you have 11 month left I would leave it and worry about the transfer around the time you need to renew the subscription.

I am curious. If the new owner does not have the current account login name and password how can he set up a new account. I thought that Skycaddie would consider the unit stolen unless the previous account holder wiped the unit clean.

I ask this because I am getting ready to sell my SG 5. If I can sell it with 2 1/2 year remaining on my plan the new owner is getting a great deal.

In my experience (went from SG3 to SG2.5 to SG5), the best way to handle the transfer is for the previous owner to simply give the new owner the username and password for the existing account. You can't change the "username" but, once you have the password, you can update name of the Owner, Owner's Address, Password (so old owner won't have access to the account once the new owner changes it), info set forth on the Skycaddie pop-up screen (in other words, with the account info, you can change it to say the new owner's name, address, etc)-- basically, other than not being able to change the "username", you can change everything else so I don't know why anyone would need to "transfer" a skycaddy officially where the info gets wiped out.

That having been said, if the new owner wants to officially "transfer", they can do so once the existing subscription runs out.

I wonder about this also as I have lost my skycaddie 2.5 and thought I left on a cart at my club. Person in shop has not had anyone turn one in yet. I question whether someone can get a new subscription or not?

My understanding is that you can contact SkyCaddie and they will block the use of your device. The thief will have a fancy paper weight.

Seems to be going around. I left mine a cart as well. Went back the next day and of course no one turned it in. I contacted Sky Golf and they marked it as stolen. It is worthless to whoever took it

As a retailer of Sky Caddies for over 4 years I can tell you that you are all correct in some way. If the unit has membership remaining keep using it till the subscription runs out. At that time the last Person to register that unit has the user name & password. You need these to upgrade or to log in & officially declare the unit sold. After that it is cleared & ready for a new owner to register it. If that unit is not reported stolen to sky caddie they sometimes will give you the user name & password but not as often as they used to. This helps keep theft down they say? If you have a Sky Caddie & want to upgrade to a new unit you can swap your membership to the new one & sell the old one.

Then selling one with 11 months left on it is a great deal for whoever buys it? They can't get access to my credit card or anything with my password? Should I just change info to random stuff so nothing identifying is on it?

I found a SGX unit and have attempted to return it to it's owner ( called skycaddie and let them know also ran an ad on Craigslist) The owner has never contacted me so now not really sure what to do with the unit. It looks useable as is since it has our local courses in it already. Maybe I need to contact SC again....see if they will reset the unit. Ideas?

This is exactly what I did and it is working great. I am using the prior owner's Birdie plan that has 1 more year left on it. All info on the unit is updated to reflect me as the owner. I use the prior owner's login userid and have changed the password. When the subscription expires I will transfer it to myself and start a new subscription.

I don't agree with Skycaddie's rule of not being able to transfer a subscription to someone else, but this accomplishes the same thing.
